Louis Armstrong

► Louis Armstrong nicknamed Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer

and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz. His career

spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.

➢ Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music

from collective improvisation to solo performance.

➢ Armstrong was a gifted composer who wrote more than fifty songs.

➢ In 1964, Armstrong knocked The Beatles off the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart

with "Hello, Dolly!", which gave the 63-year-old performer a U.S. record as the

oldest artist to have a number one song.

➢ In 1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a Louis Armstrong 32 cents commemorative

postage stamp.

“We all ‘Do, Re, Mi,’ but you have

got to find the other notes yourself.”
