Ellie Tracey, a grade five student and daughter of Derek and Jill Tracey of Bristol-Florenceville NB and granddaughter of Brian, a member of Carlton Lodge #35 and Barb Dingee of Centreville NB was the lucky winner of a draw for a bicycle while attending the Anah Shrine Circus in Presque Isle, Maine, on May 7, 2016. She was presented with the bicycle by her uncles, Noble Gary Dingee and Past Potentate of New Brunswick Garth W. Dingee. Past Potentate Dingee also had the good fortune of having two grade five students from Perth-Andover, whom he had taken on a bus to the circus, each win a bicycle. Proceeds from the circus go towards supporting the Shriners Hospitals.

A Message from our IMPERIAL POTENTATE

A Message from ourILLUSTRIOUS POTENTATE

Luxor Shriners Welcomes the Following New Nobles

Dear Fellow Nobles,Serving as Imperial Poten-

tate is an honor, a privilege and a responsibility; I want to thank you for entrusting me with this opportunity to lead and guide our organiza-tions. Each day, I will do the very best I can to strengthen and enhance Shriners Inter-national and Shriners Hospi-tals for Children®.

I also want to thank every-one for their months of hard work and endless efforts to ensure that Imperial Session was everything it is meant to be. Director General John Massey and his entire team did an outstanding job, as did the staff at home office – from those in the public re-

lations, donor development, fraternal and membership departments – to the execu-tive teams for both Shriners Hospitals and Shriners In-ternational. Actually, every department at home office contributed to the success of Imperial Session in some way and while I cannot name each of you, I do want to ac-knowledge your work and thank you. I also want to thank the tour guides at both home office and the Tampa Shriners Hospital – you al-ways do an outstanding job; we want to especially thank those who came in on the weekend to accommodate our guests.

We have a truly great team working with us at home office – and throughout our organizations, including our shrine centers, and we are confident that, working to-gether, we will accomplish great things this Imperial Year.

Ethel and I also want to thank everyone for getting the First Lady’s program, The Sky’s the Limit, off to such a great start.

We appreciate being able to travel and attend the many different events and meet-ings, and the opportunity those provide for spending

Shriners InternationalWe have arrived at the fall

of the year and tempera-tures outside have certainly dropped.

Luxor has had a busy sum-mer with dozens of parades attended on by many of our Units, none any busier than the Clown Unit. They seem to be everywhere, includ-ing Shriners International in Tampa. Percy the Paint-er (Noble Jimmy McCol-lum) picked up a couple of awards for his efforts. That is the first time Luxor clowns competed at International is a very long time. Luxor clowns are a busy bunch and continues to grow.

A tip of the FEZ to all the Nobles and Ladies that stepped up, in a big way to

help with hosting the North-east Shrine Association Fall Field Days in Fredericton this past September.

What a great Fall Field Days! Everything one could ask for such as competitions, lots of food and hospitality, and fellowships for all in at-tendance. Let’s not forget the largest parade that Frederic-ton or even New Brunswick, has seen in decades.

It was great to see Nobles and Ladies that have been around for a while as it was to welcome new Nobles and Ladies to the event.

We did miss some nobles and ladies that we were all accustomed to having around. They may be gone but certainly not forgotten.

Next, we have our final Stated meeting and election of officers for the year 2017. We need all nobles to partici-pate in the process and attend the stated meeting Saturday, December 3, 2016.

I look forward to seeing each and every noble at the stated meeting and memorial service.

I thank each and every one for your time!

Nobles, your Luminary committee is still looking for help in setting up the fin-ished product. Our commit-tee is meeting regularly and hopes to have the Luminary in your hands by the first week of November with the info on the first part of 2017; BUT it depends on the No-bility getting the articles in our hands on time, so we ask that if you have info that should be in our communi-cation, get it into the Shrine office or e-mail it to me or any of the committee mem-bers.

tise, please contact Noble Dale Stevens at 506-847-5730 or if you have an arti-cle or report, e-mail myself at [email protected] or drop it off at the Shrine Centre, We are always looking for material. I hope everyone had a great sum-mer and enjoyed and partic-ipated in as many parades as possible and please keep in mind that your Shrine Club meets monthly, so partici-pate and enjoy the fellow-ship.

time with our nobles, and their families. It is such an inspiration and encourage-ment to learn about the work being done at the local level. We want to thank everyone for their tremendous hos-pitality and consideration. We are so amazed by – and grateful for – the many ways we are looked after, every-where we go.

As you know, Shriners International is a global organization, with shrine centers and clubs in sever-al countries, and hundreds of thousands of members around the world. While that is impressive, we need to be reaching many more potential members. We need to be sharing the story of our great fraternity, of what it means to us, of why we joined, and of what we have to offer. This is the time to be seriously focused and to remember to share your fra-ternal experience with your friends – actually, try to find a way to share your story with everyone you meet. You just never know when the idea you plant will take root, grow and eventually lead to the creation of a new noble.

Personal communications are critically important, and can be tremendously effec-tive in reaching potential

new members. However, it is important that we consis-tently reach as many people as possible. The availability of many forms of electron-ic communication should make getting the word out and sharing our messages to multiple, and large, audienc-es easier. We encourage you, and your shrine centers, to use these resources – includ-ing social media and You-Tube – to help get the word out. We also need to promote our presence on television, and be sure people are aware of upcoming programs that will feature Shriners Interna-tional or Shriners Hospitals for Children, as well as the airing of ads and PSAs.

The 30th annual Member-ship Seminar is scheduled for Oct. 13-15 in Tampa, Flori-da. Please consider sending representation from your temple, whether it be Divan leadership or those on your membership team. These seminars provide important information and opportu-nities to share ideas with each other that can make a significant difference in the success of your membership recruitment, retention and restoration efforts. Please also consider inviting repre-sentatives from your Grand Lodges to attend. Partnering

with your Grand Lodge can be mutually beneficial, as membership tactics can eas-ily translate to Masonry and other fraternal organizations

We can also raise awareness through our signature events. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is coming up – it will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 6 in Las Vegas. The week-long tournament features many ad-ditional events and experiences, and is fun for the whole family. We want to thank the volunteers (who pay a fee to assist) for making that extra effort; their hard work contributes a great deal to the success of the tourna-ment. Last year, more than 300 nobles (and family members) representing approximately 35 shrine centers volunteered, and we want to especially acknowl-edge their support and commit-ment. Among these volunteers were representatives from nine shrine centers and members of the Galveston Shriners Hospi-tal’s Board of Governors who worked the holes throughout the tournament. In a creative way to both support the tour-nament and conduct business, the Galveston and Los Angeles hospitals’ Boards of Governors also held their meetings at the event. We are very proud of our shrine centers and nobles for their outstanding support. We truly appreciate all of the vol-

unteers who are so important to the Open – and we look forward to seeing them again this year.

In addition to being an out-standing opportunity to share the story of our fraternity, the Open is also a wonderful chance to showcase the amaz-ing work of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Several patients will be present, including our National Patient Ambassadors and patient volunteers who act as standard bearers. They are a stunning testament to our health care system, and to their own perseverance and strength of spirit.

I just want to make a quick mention of the East-West Shrine Game, which will be held Jan. 21, 2017, in St. Peters-burg, Florida. This event is also an opportunity for world-wide exposure, as well as a time for our nobles to share some great football and an amazing tailgate experience. Think about being in Florida in January.

Thank you for your continued support and for everything you do for our two great organi-zations. I look forward to our working together, and accom-plishing great things.

Yours in the faith,

Imperial Sir Chris L. SmithImperial Potentate

The March 29 & 30, 2016 Outreach Clinic turned out to be an abbreviated Clinic due to extreme winter weath-er conditions. The Clinic was planned for the evening of the 29th. and all day the 30th. but the 4 patients for the 29th. had to be resched-uled for the 30th. when the Doctor's flight was cancelled due to weather. The doctor did not arrive until the morn-ing of the 30th. but was still able to see 22 patients. There were 3 patients who had to cancel because of highway conditions in their area.

Total Cost for Clinic -Travel costs for patients at-tending Clinic = $1,685.00.Atlantic Host for 4 rooms for 29th = $302.84.Total = $1,987.84

Cost per child seen = $1,987.84 divided by 22 children = $90.35. The aver-age cost of a trip to Montreal in 2015 was $1,143.18 in-cluding incidental expenses. This results in savings of approximately $1,052.83 for each child seen at the Bathurst Outreach Clinic.

Total estimated savings for this Clinic = $1,052.83 X 22 children = $23,162.26.

I was informed by Doctor Fessler that records show there will probably not be sufficient children to require a Clinic in the June time frame but the next Clinic will likely be in September or October.

Boston Hospital ReportChief Rabban's Report

Ill. Sir Donald J. Taylor, PP

Dear Nobles,

This year has been going by very quickly. I have done a lot of travelling to the different Shrine Center Visitations as well as our Shrine Clubs in Luxor. I’ve also marched in several parades around the province, Hospital Seminars in Montreal and Bos-ton, as well as the Imperial Ses-sion in Tampa, Florida.

It is great to see some of the facilities that some of the Shrine Centres have. The Rhode Island Shriners inherit-ed 700 ft. of beach plus acres of land on Narragansett Bay which they made a picnic site for any Mason or Masonic Body that would like to use it. When I attended the visitation for Sphinx Shriners in Hartford, Connecticut, I visited an Avia-tion Museum which was very interesting. While visiting the Melha Shriners in Springfield, Mass., we visited a Museum for the Indian Motorcycles. The In-dian Motorcycle was manufac-tured in Springfield. While in Springfield, it was nice to visit the Shriners Hospital there and we were given the tour where the artificial limbs are made.

The Imperial Session was an-other great experience. I met new Shriners that have joined the Divan from several of the different Shrine Centres and we shared some of our experiences. It was an honor to present Past Imperial Potentate Gerry Gantt and his Lady Lisa with gifts from the Canadian Shrine Chil-dren and the Canadian Shrine Centres in appreciation of their hard work at the Montreal Hos-pital.

It has been another great ex-perience to attend the Hospital Seminar’s in Montreal and Bos-ton to see the marvelous work we do at the Shriners Hospital. Our Montreal Facility is now finished with state of the art equipment and several new em-ployees. It was a joy to be the representative from Luxor when the Daughters of the Nile gave their fifth donation of a million dollars to Montreal Hospital. We certainly need the support of our Ladies. I also participat-ed in the Quarterly Conference Calls for the Montreal Hospital.

I have had the pleasure to meet a lot of the Shriners in Luxor as I travelled to our Shrine Clubs, participating in some of their events such as Golf Days, Lob-ster Suppers and Parades. It has been a pleasure to do talks at the schools and the Bible Camp this spring and summer. The children really do listen and contribute to our Tab Program. You are a great bunch of guys to get to know.

We are now having weekly meetings for the NSA and it’s great to hear of the numbers that plan to attend. I am sure that everything will go well. There is just one visitation left this year and I plan to attend. In closing, I am enjoying the different offices of the Divan as I elevate myself to Poten-tate. If for any reason you need to talk to me please call me at (506)391-6751 or email to [email protected].

Yours in the Faith,

Noble Blaine BrooksChief Rabban

Ills. Sir, Sirs, Members of the Divan Nobles and La-dies, here we are coming to the close of another year (2016). I have been trav-elling to Boston Hospital again this year and have had the pleasure of Noble Jim McCollun travelling with me twice now as of the time of writing this report. Noble Bill Harrington is going with me in October.

Noble Jim has found it very rewarding, sitting in on the meetings but has found it rather difficult to watch some of the pictures of the children undergoing oper-ations. Noble Jim has at-tended various meeting and found the research rather in-teresting. He found out that a rabbit has the same tolerance for pain as humans and the next animal in line is sheep.

The hospital has been very busy the last few months

with patients from the New England area as well as many international ones. As Jim and I, along with some of the other Board members, watched the screen while Doctor Sheridian tells about what is happening, at times, we had to look away.

Ms. McEttrick Maloney, who has been head of Pa-tient Care Services, has been with the hospital for several years, has now taken a posi-tion with Head Office to take charge of all 22 hospitals as Director of Patient Care Ser-vices. She moved to Florida in September.

The budget for the Hospital for 2017 is in the $33 Million range. The hospital is always looking for money for vari-ous projects. One method is what they call Canning Day and all proceeds go directly to the hospital.

I wish to thank all the Board Members, all of the Nobles and Ladies, along with my Masonic Brothers and all of my Brothers and Sisters of Eastern Star for their cards and support during the pass-ing of my Wife, Lady Bren-da. You have all made it so much easier to deal with her sudden loss. The daughters of the Nile were also very supportive.

Charity

Ill. Sir Douglas I. Cosman, PP

Hello fellow Nobles and Ladies reading the Lumi-nary. I am attempting to be creative and not repetitive in preparing this article for Luxor Luminary readers. I went for a little stroll down the street mid evening to consider a format for this theme on charity. As I strolled along the street, I en-joyed the fresh air and sun-shine. Walking for me was a pleasant experience and it has almost always been that way. In the military, taking part in marches was not a dif-ficult experience. I reflected on my childhood when Dad sent me most evenings to bring the herd of cows in to the barn for milking. Walk-ing has always been a pleas-ant experience for me. Then I got to thinking about my subject and realized our fund raising is to help children to overcome walking hand-icaps or other difficulties to make life more attractive and interesting. Sometimes I had to walk home from school, a distance of three miles, and like everybody, I walked uphill both ways as I recall! However, I was for-tunate to have been born in good health and experienced no limitations in my health.

You and I know, however, there are lots of boys and girls with problems limiting their walking, running and sports activities. Thankfully, through our participation in the Shrine program, we have learned of the numerous hos-pitals which are focused on child care and we have the opportunity to support finan-cially, the program assisting boys and girls coming to us for care. Our contribution does not cause us to limp or hinder our participation in sports, but our gifts when magnified by the number of donors we are managing our program by helping thou-sands of youth every year. The next time you go for a stroll, be grateful for your good health and look at how much of a gift you can make to assist those coming for our care. Take a look at the possibilities on pages 8 and 9 in the spring edition of the Luminary for an indication of patterned ways to deal with financial gifts, but don’t limit yourself to that format. You may give thousands of dollars any time convenient for you or leave in your will a statement of a contribu-tion to go to Luxor Shrine. You may go to bed and have dreams of the children as-sisted and your conscience will make you feel right! Go on and add your donation to the list. Shelley will answer the phone and answer your questions or forward you to another person to accept your gift. Be generous and you will feel good about be-ing part of bringing children into participating fully in life with confidence and a smile.

Have a good day.

Yours in the Faith,Ill Sir Douglas CosmanDonor Relations

Welcome to my first report as your new Recorder. As you are all aware by now, I have been elected to the po-sition of Recorder upon the passing of Ill. Sir Alward Mehan and what a challenge it has been filing his shoes, but I feel very honoured to have been elected to contin-ue his work. This has been a very hectic few months with going to the Recorder’s Annual Meeting, many meetings with the ex-ecutive and trying to oversee the on goings for the North-east Shrine Fall Field Days. I would hope that my time spent in Luxor, and being a Past Potentate twice, will give me the ability to help and assist the upcoming ex-ecutive in the decisions that are needed for Luxor to be successful. In saying this, I want all of the Nobles and their Ladies to know that my ear is always available for any questions, comments

or suggestions they might have to make Luxor a better Shrine Center. Membership is still our number one concern as it was back in 2009 when I was Potentate and we MUST all make it our number 1 priority to bring a friend or Brother Mason into our fine fraternity.

In closing, I want to let our entire Nobility know that your Shrine Center is in good hands with Gord's hand on the purse strings, Shelley running the office and my-self just following their or-ders.

We are doing OK.

Yours in the Faith,Ill Sir L. Barry Mabey, PPRecorder

Shriners Village is a private web community for Shriners only. This web community is state of the art and is being de-signed to be our primary com-munications tool for all Shri-ners.

The main features of the site are our Shriners Hospitals for Children, research and special-ty areas, our hospital virtual tours and information on our fraternity. The site features ex-tensive use of videos, podcasts, pictures and documents. Shri-ners Village is our Search En-gine of Shrinedom, always up to date and always the source of accurate information from the right sources, keeping our nobles informed, updated and involved in our Shriners Hospi-

tals for Children and connected to their fraternity.

The Shriners Village Virtual Mentor community is a new way to reach out to the next generation of potential Shri-ners. These new candidates will mostly find out about us on the web and will seek to learn more. Blending our heritage and our legacy of building our member-ship by one man, mouth to ear, at a time, the Shriner Village Virtual Mentors will seek first to build a trusting relationship with these web visitors and then to take that relationship to the next level of introducing them to other Shriners who will con-nect them to local lodges and temples.

Luxor Transportation, from January 1st to September 30th 2016 inclusive saw us sending 261 passengers to Montreal by air, rail and automobile, for a total cost of $ 129,631.75. This cost, also includes incidental charges while in Montreal for hotel, taxi and meals.

A breakdown of the charges are as follows:

Charge Shrine Club Charge Shrine Club $6,215.03 Charlotte County $37,988.77 North Shore

$25,098.56 Fredericton $9,696.50 Saint John

$5,117.32 Miramichi $2,855.37 Sussex

$26,786.33 Moncton $13,234.31 Upper Saint John River Valley

$2,639.56 General (Hospital Board Meetings)

Looking at our transportation cost of sending a person to Montreal and return, including incidental charges, meals, hotel and taxi is $496.67 per person. This cost is reduced due to the number of patients willing to travel to Montreal by car.

We are fortunate that Luxor was able to save $ 34,269.05 which is reflected in the above cost. These savings are for air and rail only, and, up to Sept. 30th, we have saved 36%. This is a result of programs that are offered by the following :

Air Canada Medical Assistance ProgramAir Canada Corporate Rewards ProgramHope Air Via Rail contract and escort programAir Canada Foundation which provides Aeroplan points for us to useRBC Points donated by members of Luxor and the public

We are fortunate that this year, to date, we have 12 more round trips than Last Year and our transportation cost is $ 17,598.29 less than last year

In order to be successful and carry on the work we are doing for the Children, we have to rely on the generosity of our members and the general public who have donated points in order to keep out travel costs down.

I want to thank all the local transportation chairmen who work so hard for the children in their local Area with their travel needs.

Treasurer's Report

ARTICLE DEADLINE FOR THE NEXT LUMINARY IS MARCH 11, 2017

Assistant Rabban's Report

A copy the 2015 external au-dit has been completed by Teed Saunders Doyle & Co, Char-tered Professional Accountants and appears in this edition of the Luminary. Please take the opportunity to read and review the document. As you might realize, I have been questioned by many of the nobles over the years of the cost of such an ex-ternal audit and is it necessary. It is true that the procedure is expensive but I feel the exercise is necessary for our 700 Luxor shareholders, knowing that an outside professional financial group is able to sign off on our financial results and responsi-bilities. Would I recommend “a review only” method, perhaps if our economics warranted such a move.

The 2017 non-restricted bud-get for Luxor appears in this edition of the Luminary. Sev-

eral hours have been expended by our Chief Rabban, Blaine Brooks, and your Treasurer. Blaine has also invited the As-sistant Rabban, the High Priest & Prophet and the Recorder for their comments as we go forward. A great deal of time and effort was placed on a full review of our revenue streams. To that end, and some have al-ready commenced in this year, revenue activities will emphasis on areas including….. Build-ing rentals; partnerships; cash investment flows; luminary in-come; promotional income; lot-tery; and extended fund raising outside the box. This is all nec-essary for Luxor to survive in the long term, with a declining membership, local economic conditions and completion in the charity markets in our prov-ince. Take a look at my next paragraph for the suggestions

to change direction. Your Divan have reviewed and approved the 2017 budget and request the Stated Meeting in December provide approval as well.

In this year of 2016, our finan-cial revenues continue to take a hit.Expenses are under control and below budget but tradition-al fund raising continues to take the hit and the loss of the paper crusade adds to the decline. Transportation continues to be on a high demand for our ser-vices in sending our shrine kids to our Montreal hospital. Our Transportation travel agent is able to secure lower prices and promotional airfares to our ad-vantage. At the time of this re-port and after eight months in 2016, our operating deficit is $26,000, which includes both restrictive and non-restrictive reporting areas, but not includ-ing any realized gains or losses

in our investments. Luxor has the reserves right now to absorb our deficits but not forever!

On the Investment side of our revenue stream, we made the decision along with our lo-cal advisors and their head of-fice in Toronto to exit the U.S. markets. Luxor has gone back to more traditional Canadian stocks producing cash flow from dividends and interest type investments coupled with modest growth. The U.S. mar-kets provided Luxor with excel-lent investment growth in the past three years, but now was time to move.

Once again, I thank all nobles for their support to Luxor and my office.

Yours in the Faith,Noble Gord ThorneTreasurer

Fall is that wonderful time of year where we wonder where the summer went. It is hard to believe we are now back in the full swing of meetings, gatherings and travelling. Fall is my favou-rite time of year. It is not just the cooler days and the great scenery as we travel around our province, but get-ting back to a routine. July and August was filled with a 3-week journey to Alberta for our son’s wedding and the rest of the time dealing with family health issues. You know the old saying,” it is nice to get back to work and get a rest”.

The fall is a busy time for all of us. Soon our North East will be upon us and all the planning that has taken place over the past four years will come to fruition. It is indeed a huge undertaking

and kudos to our Potentate and his committee to make it all happen.

When I was first elected to the Divan, I thought it would be a long process to become a potentate. It is hard to be-lieve that I am over half way there. The time has flown and I have enjoyed the jour-ney so far. If I am elected in 2018, I will do the best of my ability to perform the work associated with being a Potentate. If you have any suggestions or recommen-dations that you would like to see for Luxor, feel free to communicate them with me or any Divan member.

I look forward to meeting with you at the various meet-ings and Shrine functions over the year.

Yours in the Faith,Noble Doug SwanAssistant Rabban

HELP THE LUMINARY BY ADVERTISING YOUR BUSINESS AND THANK OUR ADVERTISERS BY

PATRONIZING THEIRS!

It’s hard to believe that we are on the last few months of this year. It has been a very busy year with a very successful Spring Ceremo-nial adding new Shriners and their Ladies to our group. Don and I attended all but two visitations this year, representing Luxor well and also enjoying time spent with our Counterparts. We have one visitation left in early November. I liked all of the visitations done so far but my favorite was definite-ly Newfoundland. Bill Har-rington and Lady Darlene joined us and we had a great time. You really can’t beat Newfoundland hospitality, great people and a beautiful province!

Our biggest accomplish-ment this year in my view,

was hosting the Northeast. This was a tremendous suc-cess because so many peo-ple worked so hard for many months. The participation and support from Luxor was awesome, thanks to all of you! We definitely had some hurdles to overcome with the unfortunate passing of Luxor’s Recorder and Direc-tor General, Illustrious Sir Alward Mehan. Illustrious Sir Darrell Munn stepped into the Director General position, he and Lady Phyl-lis worked tirelessly and we can’t thank them enough. We had an excellent turn-out from the other Temples in the Northeast Associa-tion, received hundreds of positive comments, every-one had a great time. Don worked very hard to promote

this event within Fredericton itself and they came through from flying Shriners flags, lining the streets for the pa-rade and media coverage.

I’d like to add that this a volunteer organization, one for which people dedicate their time as well as their money for supporting the cause which is the Children. Being on the Divan is a huge commitment for the Nobles but also the Ladies. I un-derstand that there are “pol-itics” in every organization, however I think we need to remember that people have committed to this cause and support one another in a professional and respectful manner. This is important to remember particularly as new members are being re-cruited and contemplating

leadership positions.Another unfortunate pass-ing this year was the recent death of Lady Brenda Taylor. For those of you who were at the Northeast Ladies lun-cheon you’re aware that it was dedicated to Lady Bren-da. For those who weren’t at the luncheon, Brenda was in my view a beautiful lady inside and out. She took me under her wing very early on and I learned a lot from her. She was always present at various events and her “pres-ence” was second to none, she will be missed.

It truly has been a pleasure! Thank you all! I hope to see everyone soon and wish everyone a very Happy Hol-iday season. Take care of yourselves and each other. Lady Julie

The following Nobles have been visited by the Black Camel

When Allah calls, then our friends obey and fold their tents and steal away. To the land where the crystal waters flow, where the Beautiful Palms of Allah grow. Life is a story in volumes three, the past, the present, the yet to be. The first we've written and laid away, the second we're reading day by day, the third and last of the volumes three is locked from sight - God keepeth the key.

Please consider thefollowing seriously – Oriental

Guide Must Be Selected WiselyThis is the time you should

think about who you are going to vote for on December 5th for your new Oriental Guide. Now is the time to be sure your vote is for the man you think will do the best job. After the election is no time to say, “Gosh, we made a mistake, let’s try and change it.”

It is quite evident that nom-ination for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, in-terest and experience.

Just remember, in five years the man you elect may be Po-tentate. It’s extremely important you choose a man that is not on an ego trip but one that wants to improve Luxor Temple and make it better for all the Nobil-ity. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able, high–type leadership. The following check list may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide.Leadership, Executive Ability, Community Standing and Influ-ence, Well Poised, Good Health, Diplomacy, Stage Presence, Speaking Ability, Competent Organizer and Pro-

moter, Possess Social Grace, Financially Secure, Energy and Vitality, Free to Devote Am-ple Time, Capable of Building Good Public Relations, Good Habits and Moral Character, Interest in the SHRINE.

You as a Luxor Noble can have a great influence on the future of our fraternity by seek-ing out people that are qualified and urging them to run for that office.

It’s each and every one of the general Nobility’s responsibili-ty to see we have and elect the right people. Popularity helps but leadership and ability is much more important.

So let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all–important matter of electing to office only men who are eminently qualified for the job! We all know that with honor comes responsibility. And while there is high honor associated with a Divan office, the ensuing responsibilities en- tail a lot of time consuming, en-ergy consuming WORK!

Get together, talk it over and pick the right man for the job.

FOR INFORMATION of the Nobility, when a Potentate’s term of office expires, all ap-pointments made by him during his administration TERMI-NATE, according to the Impe-rial Law.

Such appointments include ALL appointed officers, Poten-tate’s Aides, Members of Com-mittees and their Chairmen, special appointees, directors, assistant directors and all mem-bers of the Potentate’s staff.

Some uninformed nobles have mistakenly believed or as-sumed their appointments to be permanent. NOT SO! Each Po-tentate, when installed in office

must make his own appoint-ments including — 1st and 2nd Ceremonial Masters.

The Potentate has the power and authority under Imperial Shrine Law to replace every appointee; or he may, if he be-lieves it to be in the best interest of the Temple retain all appoin-tees by reappointment.

Traditionally for the sake of efficiency, many nobles of demonstrated ability are contin-ued in office or appointment by reappointment. But this is at the will and plea-sure of the incoming Potentate.

In no case is he or can he be bound by his predecessor. By

the same token in no case can any Potentate bind his succes-sor.

Courtesy requires that a No-ble holding an appointive office position or assignment, tender his resignation to the incom-ing Potentate. If it is the will and pleasure of the incoming Potentate that the Noble is to continue in his office or posi-tion by reappointment, he will be notified by the Potentate to that effect.

Should any Noble not hold-ing appointment by the current Potentate wear a Fez carrying any title such as “Aide” or any other designation, he does so in

violation of the law. Some nobles seek to perpetu-

ate an appointment fictitiously by adding to the letters on the Fez the year or years of their appointment. This is a violation of Imperial Law. The offenders may be uninformed but igno-rance of the law is no excuse.

Our calendar project for 2017 will see a few chang-es. I consulted with you and heard back from a few No-bles on changes to our calen-dar. As a result, a few chang-es were made. Thank you to all who provided feedback. One change that was made was in the prize money. The $500 prize was eliminated this year and we are offer-ing a $100 prize every Sat-urday and every Sunday. We are continuing with the $25 prize for the other days on each month. Another sug-gestion that we are imple-menting this year is support-ing a school group by having them help sell our calendars and giving them an opportu-nity to raise funds from their school activities. To give this a try, we have increased the number of calendars by having 4000 calendars print-ed, providing 1000 calendars to a school to raise money.

We are trying a school in the Moncton area this year and if successful, will look at working with other schools in the province.

There are approximate-ly 680 Nobles and we have 4000 calendars for sale which leaves us with 3320 people to which we have an opportunity to sell ourselves as Shriners. I was very pleased this year to see our calendar hanging on office walls and in homes. It is very noticeable and a constant re-minder that we are Shriners and we do great work. It is a great way to make ourselves known.

I extend a huge thank you to all Nobles who sell and pur-chase our calendar. Without you, our calendar program would not be successful.

Yours in the Faith,Noble Doug SwanAssistant Rabban

HELP THE LUMINARY BY ADVERTISING YOUR BUSINESS AND THANK OUR ADVERTISERS BY PATRONIZING THEIRS!

Well Nobles, by the time you read this report, the Northeast festivities will be history and I am sure you will be very proud of be-longing to Luxor Shrine.

The year has gone very fast and your Divan mem-bers have travelled a lot of miles representing your tem-ple. I started my travels by representing you in Tampa at the Imperial Session and then accompanying our Po-tentate to a visitation in St. John's Newfoundland which turned out to be a great expe-rience as we travelled to an Island outpost close to Come By Chance.

While there, I got to go hand lining cod which would have been great experience if I had not put a fish hook

through the palm of my hand. But with the help of a fellow traveller (who hap-pened to be a Newfound-lander), a rusty pair of pliers and a large glass of scotch, it was removed quickly and efficiently.

It’s hard to believe that in three short months, we will be electing a new Potentate and the divan members that hopefully are progressing along the line.

On behalf of all of the Di-van members who appreciate your support and work hard to represent you at the var-ious Shrine activities, let’s make 2017 another GREAT YEAR for LUXOR.

Yours in the Faith, Noble Bill Harrington High Priest & Prophet

Jim had the pleasure of attending the Imperial Session in Tampa, Florida in July as a non-voting member and participated in the Clown Makeup Competition and was fortunate to place second (2nd) in the Character Cate-gory.This is the first time a Luxor Clown participated at an

Imperial Session. Congratulations to Jim for taking the initiative to be part of such a prestigious event. Jim was also able to parade with the Mexican Clown Unit and they received first place in the Clown Category for best in parade. I am sure this was a highlight for Jim and will not be forgotten. Many thanks to Hambone and Jimbob and their fellow clowns from Mexico. We are proud to say that at the end of parade a Shrine

Child received Jim's Clown vest. This is great recognition for Luxor and Jim as we con-

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT

To the Nobles of Luxor Shriners (excluding Clubs and Units)

We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of Luxor Shriners (excluding Clubs and Units), which comprise the consolidated statement of financial position as at December 31, 2015, and the consolidated statements of changes in members' equity, activities and cash flows for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements

Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditors' Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors' judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our qualified audit opinion.

Basis for Qualified Opinion

The organization derives part of its revenue from fundraising activities, contributions from Clubs and Units, charitable donations and other revenue, the completeness of which is not susceptible to satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the organization and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to these revenues, changes in members' equity, assets and members' equity.

Knowing someone fully is impossible. Especially if you never get the chance to meet them in person, then you sometimes know nothing. This is because views of who we are through pieces of writing get interpreted. This will not be that.

Starting off simply enough, I am Abbi Melanson. Cur-rently I am a 17 year old girl who lives in Moncton, New Brunswick. On my birth date I was born with a rare condi-tion called Caudal Regression syndrome. At the time there wasn't much hope of me ever walking but, in hopes of some improvement in my mobility they tried an experimental sur-gery on me, mixing a few dif-ferent surgeries together. This was all simply the beginning of my story.

Just to mess with the doctors and all logic, I decided to learn to walk. Even though they were certain I was never going to be able to move my toes at all. I wanted to prove science wrong I guess. For years I used leg braces, wheelchairs, walk-ers, all the fun discrete things. I'm sure no one at my schools could tell there was something different. But through support and help from the doctors at the Shriners I have made a lit-erally, full recovery, something even they thought impossible.

Now I'm in my second last year of high school and my life

has shocked even me. I have a driver's license and own my own car, which I use to drive me and my friends to the mall or school. I'm in several ad-vanced classes and work as a cashier. When we have sports night with my cadet group I can actually do all the running and lifting, sometimes better than other kids. I'm heading off to University in two years to take biomedical engineer-ing.

What of this do you think I ever imagined happening? The answer is none of it and all of it. Sure I never imagined any of this exactly but with my doctors always encouraging me to do stuff and telling me to stop saying 'I can't'. Because of all of this I've always been determined, simply because I knew they had my back.

Sadly all things come to an end. They've done their job too well and I'm not going back for two years. I used to go to the old hospital and now I'm attending the new one but I won't get to experience it for long. I've started my transition into adulthood and when I'm 21, I won't be attending the Shriners anymore. The thought of this honestly hurts because, not only am I losing the best doctors, I'm losing family .

I am Abbi Melanson!

Growing up in Sydney, NS, he was very active in the Boy Scouts... a Patrol Lead-er, a Queen Scout, Venturer, and Rover before becoming a Troop Leader. “Scouting taught me many life skills...to be resourceful, to be pre-pared, to guide, to give ev-eryone a chance, and to help with whatever and whenever you were needed....”

Rick moved to Moncton in the fall of 1967, attend-ed Mt. A, and became an educator. During his early teaching career in Junior High, he served on various school committees such as Home and School, student council, and provincial cur-riculum development. His first 2 years were at Edith Cavell, followed by 20 years at Magnetic Hill, then on to Moncton High for anoth-er 10. Rick has been retired since 2004. At Mag Hill, he applied for and administered two Canada Works Grants, one to start a “hot lunch pro-

gram” and another to build an eco-friendly playground for the school and communi-ty. After moving to the high school level, he was the fi-nancial advisor for the stu-dent council, assisted with major drama productions, and instigated the develop-ment of provincial programs in the field of broad base technology and co-op edu-cation.

Being a Mason and Shri-ner for over 20 years, he has given his time so that “kids with physical and medical problems can walk and smile again”. He has been the chairman of the Luxor Shri-ners largest provincial fund-raiser for the last three years, has been on the provincial executive of Luxor Shriners for a number of years, and President of the Moncton Shrine Club. He was Presi-dent and builder of the Lux-or “Mini Kar Unit” (the little cars) and “Classic Wheels Unit” (the big cars), and an

accomplished community ambassador for the Shriners of New Brunswick.

He did his civic duty by sit-ting on the “City of Moncton Town Planning Commis-sion” for a three year term. Presently he sits on the Board of Directors of two local mu-seums, the “Lutz Mountain Heritage Museum”, and the “Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame” in Petitcodiac, where he became an Induct-ee in 2015 for his rally and solo event successes in the seventies and eighties.

In his “spare time”, his company currently designs and builds street rods and custom cars, and helps others do the same, using the skills he acquired during years of welding, and restoring an-tique vehicles. At his shop, he never says “no” when a project for a handicapped child comes his way.... Such as winter skis for wheel-chairs, or motorized off-road buggies to allow movement impaired children to travel on their own to a favorite fishing hole....

As well, he is involved with four Car Clubs in the great-er Moncton area, two Inter-national Car organizations, assists with several large and very popular local car shows, writes a column for a local monthly newspaper, and still competes for fun in area motorsport events, including auto slaloms and drag racing. In 1987, after moving into the city, he met an antique car enthusiast on an “evening walk around the block”, immediately joined the NBAAC Southeast Re-gion, and became a member of the Fleamarket Commit-

tee, where he has stayed for over 25 years! He has also served on the NBAAC Pro-vincial Executive; as editor of Wheeltracks; Scholar-ship Chairman; Provincial Tour Chairman; Anniversary Committees; and promotes the NBAAC whenever he meets other old car enthusi-asts.....

He and his wife Debbie, of nearly forty years, like to travel and explore east-ern North America several times a year by boat, plane, and especially an antique or custom car.

On April 12th, 2016, Gov-ernor General David John-ston invited Richard to the inaugural presentation of the new Queens award for vol-unteers. He was one of 7 At-lantic Canadians to receive the “Sovereign's Medal” at the formal presentation in the ballroom of Rideau Hall in Ottawa. At the reception which followed, his Excel-lency the Governor General and his wife Sharon mingled freely with all the recipi-ents. The atmosphere was very “informal”, and they were genuinely interested in where each recipient was from, and their endeavors. Richard afterwards stated, "The whole experience was very enjoyable!"

Oriental Guide's Report Membership Committee Report

Support Your Blue Lodge Not all Masons are Shriners, but all Shriners are Masons. Remember to Support Your

Blue Lodge.

Dear Nobles,Membership is the concern of all Nobles. We are trying different things around the province. In the Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton Shrine Clubs, a Blue Bud-dy Night is working well. They seem to be getting a good attendance and some are joining our Philanthro-py. Other Shrine Centres are inviting people to their spe-cial events such as, supper before the meetings, Lobster stags while others express interest in our group so we talk with them explaining what we do. Thanks to No-ble Bill Harrington who has taken the initiative to involve the Ambassadors in each Shrine Club and to work with Nobles whose dues are in arrears. This seems to be working in areas as it helps to retain our Membership. Last year, it was great that we had 8 or 10 Nobles pay their delinquent dues after being suspended. This fall, we have Noble Brian Big-

gins interested in taking the Membership Seminar and working on retaining and attracting new members, so let’s welcome Noble Biggins to the Membership Commit-tee. Overall, we are all work-ing hard to retain and attract new members so let’s keep up the good work as it is a struggle to attract new No-bles.

We also need the support of our Ladies and as they make friends within our group, they encourage our Nobles and others to carry on.

Remember that the Divan is here to support all the Clubs and Units and if we can be of assistance to any of you PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CALL. I am looking forward to another GREAT year as we work as a TEAM to keep this organi-zation going.

Yours in the Faith,Noble Blaine BrooksChief RabbanMembership Chairman

The Fall is upon us and once again, the “Powers To Be” are chasing me for a message from the Oriental Guide. Not much to this job, and, as I said in the Spring issue, my “other hat” was a lot more fun. As I type this, the Northeast Field days are over and it was a busy week-end. As the hosting temple, Luxor, more specifically, the Motor Corps, was responsi-ble for the operation of the motorized parade vehicle competitions.

The weekend started with a meeting of all motorized units on Friday afternoon, which is the usual practice. Following the meeting, we adjourned to the competition location where the fields were laid out with chalk marks and cones. However, we were not able to do this as the parking lot was too wet and the wind too high. As a result, we decided to carry out this task Saturday morn-ing with the advance team arriving at 6:00am. Hmmm, pretty sure I had just left the hospitality room, however, with a bit of coffee into us, we had the fields ready for the competitions that be-gan at 7:30 sharp .Well, and maybe none of us were that sharp.

The competitions were a lot of fun and at any given time, there was any number of tiny vehicles buzzing around cones and a fresh bunch of drivers going through in-spection. We turned the field over to the Parade Commit-tee at 11:00 AM.

That evening, we hi-jacked the banquet to hand out the hardware!!The Tunis guys and their lit-tle bikes took home most of the trophies, including the “Best in Parade”. The Lux-or mini-bikes snatched 3rd place in the under 100cc ob-stacle course race. Congrats guys.

I have some people to thank. First of all, Craig Clifford, the Secretary of the Northeast Association of Shrine Motor Corps for his expertise and guidance; the Nobles of the Luxor Motor Corps, for their fine turn out to man the many stations, in particular, Noble Bill Blatchford for the hours devoted to the cause; and the Nobles of the Luxor Rail-way Unit for their assistance on the competition fields. A particular thanks to a couple of members of the Canadian Military, in particular, Major Brent Whelan, CD Deputy Commanding Officer RNBR Canadian Armed Forces and Company Sergeant Major, MWO Graham Gill, for giv-ing up their Saturday morn-ing to perform inspection duty. Also, a special thanks to Imperial Sir Bill Bailey and Illustrious Sir Gale Ben-nington for sweeping our drill field, and last, but not least, Imperial Sir Jim Cain for the thank you presenta-tion to our Inspectors. Thank you gentlemen, thank you all.

Yours in the Faith,Noble Ray MaberOriental Guide

A huge thank you goes out to all Shrine Clubs and indi-viduals who sold and/or purchased tickets on the “Hockey Towns” Fundraiser.

The fundraiser raised $10,684 which went to the Luxor Shriners Patient’s Transportation Fund.

The winner of the hometown Hockey jacket and auto-graphed copy of the Ron MacLean book “Hockey Towns” was Noble Dean Nicholson.

From Imperial By–Laws(IOWA Corporation) Article 25

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to again bring greetings from Nereides Temple no 78.

In July, we had the pleasure to welcome our Supreme Queen, Kathy Carol Rose, and were very proud when she presented three Supreme appointees from our Tem-ple, Supreme Good Will Ambassador of North East area, P.Q. Dorothy Allen, Supreme Escort to Canadian Flag, P.Q. Linda Haynes and Supreme Escort to the Nile Banner, P.Q. Sheila Thorne.

During the ceremonial, we were pleased to initiate and welcome two new members to Nereides Temple.

We also enjoyed the meal prepared and served by members of the Motor Corp under the direction of Noble Ray Maber.

The Temple was saddened by the death of our faithful banker and beloved friend, P.Q. Brenda Taylor. Our sin-cere sympathy is extended to her husband Don and family.

We are now preparing for our Annual Fall Luncheon, bake and craft sale, which will have a Victorian theme. The cost will be $8.00 per ticket.

The North Shore Club, Daughters of the Nile, un-der the direction of Marjorie Colton, is also busy filling boxes of requested items for the Shriners Children's Hos-pital in Montreal.

When this message is print-ed, we will be soon entering the Christmas season and I wish you all, a Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year. Once again I would like to express how much we appre-ciate helping the Shriners in the important work they do.

Page 44 Luxor Luminary Fall 2016

As we approach October 4 2016 it will be the first anni-versary of our new Canadian Shriners Hospital in Mon-treal. Although we are cel-ebrating an anniversary, the work goes on. Yes there were startup issues like any new facility but we overcame the situations in a very success-ful manner. With great co-operation from our adjacent hospital, all of our kids were cared for.

One of the committees I sit on with four other Shri-ners from across the country and Northern United States is the nominating group. As this is fairly new we have had 5 meetings to choose the future Shriners who will be present at Board meetings as turnovers take effect in all temples. In a little over 2

years I will have reached my term of office and any nom-inations are to be forwarded to this committee for review and considerations. The pro-cess is to determine a cross section of nobles and their backgrounds that would as-sist the Board. After the se-lections are made an inter-view takes place with that individual and forwarded to our Tampa headquarters for final approval

On another committee I have been on for over 5 years, the Public Relations group, have been active in many ways since the start. I will first note the success of our 6th Shriners Golf Tour-nament again reaching over $500,000 making this the best in the Shriners Hospi-tal system. A big part of the success has been the time and effort put in by Benito Migliorati and Gino Berretta (our chairman) For six years these gentlemen raised a big part of the 3 million dollars for the Hospital Foundation. I certainly hope to see some other Luxor golfers attend this annual event. From the Bathurst area I have taken as many as 15 non Shriners each year. I still await your calls. As many know our late Board member Jim Harrison recruited Montreal Canadi-ans forward Brendan Galla-gher as an ambassador for

the Canadian Shriners Hos-pital starting in his home-town of Vancouver

At the recent Northeast Shriners meetings in Fred-ericton we had our Hospital represented by M. Emman-uelle Rondeau, Communi-cations Officer at Montreal Hospital. In her delivery at the banquet she spoke on several topics including the new simulation centre which opened in the last two weeks. This centre will be a training place for new doctors for fu-ture work in the hospital and it is 'State of the Art'. Anyone on a visit to this place for our kids must take time to visit and maybe try your skills.

Yes the capital campaign finished with over $30 mil-lion raised by many of you and certainly the corporate companies were there for us. Many of you will receive letters and invitations to a function at Luxor in the fu-ture. Hospital Fundraising Events will continue to raise funds for the future needs at the Hospital. It is still not too late to have your name or families names added to the Donor walls in the hospital lobby and receive a tax re-ceipt for your contributions. I might add also our Trans-portation Fund can accept Air Miles Aeroplan Miles from anyone and receive an income tax receipt.

I invite you to look at May 16, 2017 to attend the Hospi-tal Seminar in Montreal and take in the different activites planed. (Humour Me 2017 is one)

As the Hospital continues to grow it requires more staff and people in the different departments. Recently we welcomed our new admin-istrator M. Catherine Boyle who has been very busy with many duties. Recently we were introduced to Nathalie Kamel, the new director ofdevelopment. Under Dr. St.Amaud's supervision in research, he has recruited Ms. Caitlin Anderson whose research project is Screening for small molecules that in-hibit the interaction.

In closing this report, I would invite any Shriners, their Ladies or groups to come and visit YOUR HOS-PITAL and see what you have been doing for OUR KIDS. Remember that is the purpose of our fundraising.

Yours in the Faith,Ill. Sir J. Daryll Stothart, PPLuxor Board of Governors Representative

Donations for Signatures

Shriners Hospital of Canada received a donation during the NSA Fall Field Days thanks to the owner of Iron Gate Automotive, Mr George Galantai. He supplied this new red trailer (notice the hospital logo-there is one on all sides of this unit). It was parked out front of the Del-ta Hotel in Fredericton for the weekend. Everyone was encouraged to sign their name on the trailer. With each name, Mr. Galantai donated a dollar to Luxor for the Montreal hospital. Thanks to George Galantai and his staff, we received well over $1500.00 for the hospital.

Thank you Mr. George Galantai, much appreciated!
