TECHNICALELECTRICAL
Lumenrail® operates on 24V DC power supplied by a Class 2, 100 Watt driver housed in a NEMA 3R enclosure. Up to 3 drivers may be daisy chained together for longer railing runs.
Lumenrail LEDs consume as few as 1.8 watts per foot where up to 40' of lights may be powered off each individual driver. The driver must be remotely located from the rail.
Lumenrail is dimmable using pulse width modulation. Please consult your Lumenrail representative or Wagner for PWM dimming module suggestions and other information.
INFILL OPTIONS
When used in a guard rail application, the guard must meet the requirements of the building code. Typically this would require a minimum height of 42" — for commercial applications — with no openings large enough to permit the passage of a 4" sphere. To meet this requirement, an infill of some type will be required. Lumenrail is available with several choices of infill, including: Cable, Glass and Archimesh™ woven wire.

BUILDING CODESAll references in this section are taken from current versions of the model codes — International Building Code (IBC), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code, as well as standards from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standards for Acces-sible Design.
Local jurisdictions generally use these codes and standards to create their own. Always confirm with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) prior to using or specifying any railing products.
HANDRAIL AND GUARDHandrails are in place to provide guidance while the purpose of a guard is to prevent accidental falls.
Guards are generally required for ramps, stairs or landings with a drop greater than 30".
The IBC requires a guard to be a minimum of 42" above the walking surface. The International Residential Code (IRC) minimum height requirement is 36".
Handrails are located between 34" and 38" above stair nosings and have dimensional limitations for graspability. Under the IBC, if a 42" guard is called for on a stair or ramp, it will also require a handrail at the appropriate height.
Handrail also must meet dimensional requirements for graspability as shown in the image to the right. A guard top rail, that is not used as a handrail, would not have a graspability size limitation.
Guards also have opening limitations to consider. Both the IRC and the IBC state that no opening be large enough to allow a 4" sphere to pass.
While a handrail may need to be installed on stairs less than 30" high, it does not have to meet the opening limitations required of a guard.
LOAD REQUIREMENTSIn addition to dimensional and infill requirements, handrails and guards are required to withstand a minimum structural load of 200 lbs concentrated or 50 lbs/ft uniform at the top of the guard or handrail. Infills are required to meet a 50lb/sq ft load.
ACCESSIBILITY GUIDELINES AND STANDARDSThere are three primary references that have been used throughout the country in relation to accessibility: ICC/ANSI A117.1, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities,” and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standards for Accessible Design” (SAD).
Many states have their own accessibility standards based on the 2010 ADASAD. While they are for the most part in harmony with the federal standard, some variances exist. Again, always confirm with your local AHJ to avoid costly delays or changes.
HANDRAIL DIMENSIONSCurrent codes are now in harmony regarding most handrail dimensions and clearance requirements.
Handrail gripping surfaces with a circular cross section must be between 11/4" minimum and 2" maximum.
Non-circular handrail is limited to a maximum cross section of 21/4" with a perimeter dimension between 4" and 61/4".

Handrail is also required to be free of obstructions. If mounted to the top of a post, the bottoms of the handrail may not be obstructed for more than 20% of their length.
If mounted to a wall or the side of a post, the handrail must be a 11/2" minimum clearance.
NOTE: If your handrail is subject to the requirements of NFPA 101 - Life Safety Code, you will need to provide a minimum clearance of 21/4". Also note that the California Accessibility Standards are still using the 1990 ADAAG requirement that handrail must be 11/2" — absolute — from the wall. Always confirm requirements with your local AHJ.
Where provided, horizontal projections (i.e. bracket arms) shall occur 11/2" minimum below the bottom of the handrail gripping surface. The distance between horizontal projections and the bottom of the gripping surface shall be permitted to be reduced by 1/8" for each 1/2" of additional handrail perimeter dimension that exceeds 4". Use this table for reference.

BUILDING CODESHANDRAIL EXTENSION REQUIREMENTSHandrail extension requirements have changed in the more recent versions of the various codes and standards. You should confirm whether your local AHJ has updated to the current versions of these requirements.
At the top of a stair, handrail must extend horizontally above the landing for 12" minimum beginning directly above the first riser nosing. At the bottom of a stair, handrail must extend at the slope of the stair flight for a horizontal distance equal to one tread depth beyond the last stair nosing.
For a ramp, a 12" horizontal extension is required at both the top and bottom landings.
Some local AHJs are still requiring a horizontal extension at the bottom of a stair or have longer extension requirements.
Extensions must also return to a wall, guard, or the landing surface; or shall continue to the handrail of an adjacent stair flight.
