MATYA

Matya is a typical Buddhist festival of Nepal which in Newari means the festivals of lights. It is however, quite different from Deepawali which we celebrate every year in the month of November. This interesting festival begins early in the morning on the third day of the dark fortnight of Shrawan (August).

One of the most fascinating features of this festival is a long parade of the enthusiastic shrine-walkers who go round all the Buddhist shrines scattered in and around the city of Patan. It must be remembered here that Patan alone has more than 1300 Buddhist shrines. The number of shrine-walkers who colorfully form this impressive parade is around three to four thousands. Men and women both participate in this festival. They carry variety of interesting gifts to make offerings to Lord Buddha. The offerings of rice, grains, flowers, red Powders, sweets, incense and guru patra (a gift cup for guru) are quite common tin the scene. However the offering of oil or butter lamps to Lord Buddha on this auspicious day is a dominant feature. It is interesting to note that the majority of the shrine-walker are the lamp offers to the shrines. Offering lamps in particular to the Buddha on this day is said to signify great enlightenment obtained by overcoming the Maras (temptations).

There is a very interesting story about the origin of this festival. Once Shakya Muni Gautam was in deep penance to attain Nirvana. The Maras, awfully jealous of his determination came down to detract him. They came disguising themselves in different forms. Some were in the form of fierce-looking demons and some in apsara form (damsels) and so on. They all made every possible attempt to seduce him but all in vain. In a long run Shakya Muni overcame the Maras and became Buddha, the enlightened one. It is said that later on, the Maras came to confess their sin to lord Buddha and worshipped him with great honor. Ever since this festival is believed to have come into existence to mark this great day.

The expression of this fantastic story can be found in this festival. All those devil dancers and the apsara actors and several other funny mask-wearers who are the part and parcel of this festival parade are said to represent the Maras. This parade is always accompanied by several groups of musicians playing various kinds of traditional musical instruments.

E-MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2013

The route prescribed for this parade to pass through looks quite confusing yet a accepted as most perfect shortcut. This parade is supposed to move on in an unbroken chain. The route map of the entire parade is a leading group of musicians who always go ahead of the parade playing a kind of music. People here are not used to maps. It takes seven to eight hours to complete going round the entire Buddhist shrines.

It is interesting to note that the ten different neighborhoods of Patan have long been devoted to the regular running of this festival parade. The responsibility of organizing this parade goes to each of those neighborhoods once in every ten years. There is very interesting tradition according to which the sponsoring Tole of this parade must train a team of traditional drum-players who are expected to display every best skill they have when they are asked to perform in the public on this day. The name of these drummers team is known as Naubaja Khalah. They perform this show in a very special way only at the member Toles devoted to this Matya festival. It is quite exciting to see the way they go round the town and perform this typical musical show with great enthusiasm. Some of the drums that are used for the occasion are so richly decorated that people sometimes mistake them for temple treasures.

The most enjoyable part of this festival Parade for the children is the devil dancers and funny mask-wearers. Quite a number of them are clad from head to foot all in worn out sacks and rags. Whenever they came across the inquisitive kids they suddenly jump in a dramatic way and try to scare them away. The kids who are too slow to get the fun always stay away from the scene and those who are smart enough to push themselves in the front never wait to tease those devil dancers and enjoy themselves to their heart’s content. uddhists have a tremendous respect to this festival and so they celebrate it with great feast and fun. They seem to have attached a great deal of significance to this day which as they believe is an unforgettable day as all the Maras surrendered themselves to Lord

Experience Matya Health Camp was the first project I participated from RCL and also probably the first time I served the community. I was pretty excited because we had learnt some foot massage techniques a day earlier and since the camp was set near my house, I had to show everyone that I was doing some good work. But I realized that it’s not just about showing off but it’s about the satisfaction you get after seeing tired faces turning into happy faces. It was indeed fun but more than fun, I got to bond with my fellow rotaractors as I was new then. And the experience of serving the community was great. Matya Health Camp is one of the best community service projects that RCL has been doing and I think it should be carried on for more years to come. -Rtr. Prachina Shakya

Since my childhood I always wanted to take part in matya. Me with my cousin brothers and sisters, we always used to say “hami arko barsa janey hai” while watching matya. But “next year” came after 9years of saying it for the first time, and I finally took part in matya in 2012. I was too excited going to matya dressed in cultural outfit which was the best part. It was really painful and in the mean time it was fun as well, walking whole day with traditional music and many people. In morning I thought to myself how can we walk whole day?, it’s impossible, but later on as time went by and it was about to end then I felt thought “how fast?” and this thought came in my mind as matya was very fun. One of the moment that I won’t forget about matya is that “one mask man dressed up as a girl came to hug me tightly, and he knew my name, but I didn’t knew that person but later on after some time when I saw that mask man again I came to know that he was my cousin” and it was too funny. Matya also helped me to discover many new “gallis” and “chowks” which I would have never known if I hadn’t gone to matya. I would love to go to “matya “in coming years too. -Rtr. Sanjal Byanjankar

Well, when it comes to describing about my matya festival experience, I’d like to describe my memorable day that I spent participating in matya with my friends, brothers and sisters in 2069. We’re around 7 shrine-walkers. Since Red Powder (Known as abbir in nepali) offering are rarely seen these days during matya, we devotees decided offering Red Powder to Lord Buddha. At the start of the day, we’re little bit shy offering red powder color to Lord Buddha. But by the mean-time, we were also very pledged to hear people murmuring some good views about offering red powder to lord Buddha. Although we were very tired walking a long day, but the feedback we were hearing during the shrine-walk was making our day fantastic. The shrine-walk viewer seems glad seeing the traditions offering of Red Powder color being made to Lord Buddha. Viewers were very excited to see Lord Buddha colored totally red with Red Powder color. According to the viewers we were the most unique and appreciated shrine-walkers during the matya. We’re very glad to hear the feedbacks that we had never expected. It was just a memorable day that I have had ever in my life. We were also colored red in color playing ourselves during making offerings to Lord Buddha which we enjoyed ourselves a lot. Finally, by the end of the day we also could hear that we were only the devotee group that was offering Red Powder color to Lord Buddha which really made us very glad to participate in matya festival.

But the few things which I felt that we lacked on were that we were very few in numbers. If we had a huge number of shrine-walkers offering red powder color, it would have been more interesting adding some more Red Powder color to Lord Buddha as well as making some more interesting to the shrine-walker viewers during the matya. -Rtr.Bijay Byanjankar

Ever since I joined Rotaract, I have been volunteering in every Matya Health Camps that has been organized by Rotaract Club of Lalitpur. Providing some medical support, and giving the ice massage to the devotees gives a bliss and satisfaction to the heart. On this very day hundreds of devotees participate in Matya and making them little easy to reach their destination makes me feel blessed. I will surely continue to serve the devotees of Matya to my fullest every year. -Rtr. Alisha Shakya

- Rtr. Sanjay ByanjankarMY JOURNEY

There I started playing and gained some knowledge about the full court

5 on 5 game.I was just a beginner at that time.

When I started entering Patan campus I was at my teen age. But

my colleague used to think i was of mid 20’s. Then I continued playing at Patan Campus. Happen to meet many senior players... learnt a lot from them. Then for the first time I was called up to play from the

campus team by Sachin dai. That was the first official game I ever

played in my life. Then gradually I got chance to play from Shanti Yuwa

club of Patan Dhoka. Participated in many tournaments, gained much

game knowledge but still I was lacking lot in my base. Then in 2005

I too tried for the national team as the selection was going on and it

was like a lottery to me, just got in. But I knew I wasn’t really a qualified

candidate... Well it just went on. Then after Shanti Yuwa club I remember

the NCC tournament where I participated from South Siders Club. I was recruited by Anil dai. At that

time I can still remember Ashish dai was also playing for the team where as now he is the coach of the club.

Then my basketball career just went on from this club, many ups and

downs, had hard time practicing had many joyful moments. It’s been like I have spent 5 yrs playing for this club. I would like to thank all my

teammates from Shanti Yuwa,

KNK college and the South Siders club. It’s been a long

time playing together had hard times to reach at this stage. This Journey has been truly amazing for me throughout which I’ve

met a lot of players, have got to play alongside amazing talents. And the journey goes on……..

Yeah I was just thinking....how I happen to come this far with my basketball career. Then I

remember….. some of my friends who helped me with basketball.

First of all I remember my childhood school friend Aaysuhka

Pradhan. He was the one who helped me a lot with basketball. He

was the one who always bought basketball and I would borrow his ball and play. That’s how I

actually learnt playing basketball. Also I remember the engineering campus where I started to learn

how to shoot, dribble and all other basketball things. I remember

I used to shoot when the senior players who played full court

went from one ring to the other. Gradually I learnt something

about the game played some 3 on 3 games. I remember Nipen dai,

Sarju dai, Vaskar dai, Kundai dai, Arun , Nabin, Gautam, Nimesh, Utsav the senior players of that

times I have learnt a lot of them. At that time I had an aim to be a

basketball player so, I just thought of improving. Then I came to

realize playing 3on3 won’t help me much. Needed to gain knowledge

about the 5 on 5 game. So then I moved from the engineering

campus to Patan Campus.Patan campus was one of the place

where you could meet lots of players of that time. Patan campus

used to be packed with players playing hoops.
