As president of Nagoya University, I

would like to take this opportunity to

extend a heartfelt welcome to those of

you wishing to participate in the Nagoya

University Program for Academic

Exchange (NUPACE).

We live in a special era. Not only have

we come face to face with a new centu-

ry, but also the advent of a new millen-

nium. The east-west divide has crum-

bled along with the meltdown of the

Cold War, and global paradigms in

every field, be it politics, economics or

the industrial structure, have altered irre-

versibly. The youth of today should fol-

low neither the old order nor conform to

outdated concepts; you must realise that

you are fortunate in being alive at a time

ideally-suited to creating a new and bet-

ter world.

So that you may contribute construc-

tively to this era, it is of paramount

importance for you to lay an internation-

al foundation early in your life, prefer-

ably by experiencing life abroad, and to

develop those qualities that enable you

to comprehend a pluralistic, intercultural

environment.

You have been brought up in your

own individual culture of which you are

proud, and in which you probably wish

to make your home. That is only natur-

al. A person who has lost his or her

national or tribal identity will not earn

respect. Of significance, however, is that

the present and the future belong to an

international era. If I were to define

‘internationalisation’ to you, I would

emphasise mutual understanding,

respect, and co-operation based on these

qualities. Bearing this in mind, come to

Japan, come to Nagoya University and

add a new dimension both to your acad-

emic career and life.

try have fused in modern-day Nagoya to

The Chubu region, located in the heart of Japan, has played a central role in this nation’s history and has for long pros-

pered under a flourishing culture and economy. The area is particularly renowned as the home of Oda Nobunaga,

Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the three military leaders who unified Japan over four hundred years ago,

thereby bringing an end to the Century of Warring States. Nagoya Castle, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu and famous for the

golden dolphins found on its donjon, serves as the landmark of the region. Its castle town, Nagoya, has thrived.

In contemporary Japan, this vibrant metropolis occupies an important political and economical position. Nagoya consti-

tutes the nerve centre of the Chubu Industrial Zone, an amalgamation of both traditional and modern industries, notable

amongst which is the automobile industry.

Although Nagoya University’s history can be dated back to 1871, when a medical school and hospital were founded on

the site of a local feudal government house, it was in 1939 that the university was formally established as Japan’s seventh

imperial university. Since 1949, after its re-emergence in the reformed post-war education system, Nagoya University has

not only developed as the pre-eminent educational establishment in the Chubu region, it has also flourished as one of the

foremost national universities in Japan.

Currently, Nagoya University consists of nine undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate schools, two research institutes

and twenty research centres. Approximately 16,500 students are enrolled at the university, over 1,100 of whom form a

lively international community. The teaching, research and administrative staff numbers about 3,400.

Whilst fostering an academic tradition of freedom and tolerance, today’s Nagoya University is constantly reinventing

itself in its quest to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

NUPACE2004-2005NAGOYA UNIVERSITY PROGRAM FOR ACADEMIC EXCHANGE

The Nagoya University Program forAcademic Exchange (NUPACE) offers aunique curriculum consisting of Japanese lan-guage instruction, Japan area studies, and cours-es in the student’s major field of study. The pro-gramme endeavours to internationalise througheducation, forge friendships that extend beyondborders, and foster talented individuals capableof contributing positively to the internationalsociety of tomorrow.

EligibilityOverseas students who meet the following

conditions are eligible to apply for NUPACE: 1. Students MUST be enrolled in full-time

undergraduate or graduate degree programmesat overseas universities that have concluded anacademic exchange agreement with NagoyaUniversity. Refer to pp. 23~25.

2. Students MUST meet the applicationrequirements of the ‘Short-term StudentExchange Promotion Program’ of theAssociation of International Education, Japan(AIEJ). Refer to pp. 16~17.

3. Students MUST have a cumulative gradepoint average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) or better on a4.0 scale, or the equivalent.

4. NUPACE requires exchange students tobe proficient in EITHER English OR Japanese.Non-native English speakers wishing to partici-pate in the NUPACE English-language curricu-lum should possess a TOEFL score of 530<CBT = 197>, TOEIC score of 670, or anIELTS overall band score of 5.5.

Students intending to take regular universitycourses instructed in Japanese must possessJapanese Language Proficiency Test level 1, orthe equivalent. Students enrolling in ‘AdvancedStudies in Japanese Language and Culture’should possess level 2 of the same examination.As of 2004~2005, NUPACE will also considerapplications from students having scored wellin the Japanese language section of theExamination for Japanese UniversityAdmission for International Students (EJU).Please contact the NUPACE Office in advanceif you have taken this examination.

Student Status1. Undergraduate Students:

Undergraduate students admitted to theNUPACE programme to completeNUPACE courses and/or courses offeredat the various undergraduate schools ofNagoya University, and who thereby satis-fy the requirements to earn credits, shallhold Special Undergraduate Student status.

2. Graduate Students:(1) Graduate students admitted to the

NUPACE programme to completeNUPACE courses and/or courses offeredat the various graduate schools ofNagoya University, and who thereby sat-isfy the requirements to earn credits, shallhold Special Graduate Student status.

(2) Graduate students, not requiring cred-its, who are admitted to graduate schoolresearch departments to engage in guid-ed research, shall hold Special Research

Student status.

3. Advanced Japanese Language Students: Students admitted to NUPACE to partici-pate in the one-year ‘Advanced Studies inJapanese Language and Culture’ pro-gramme, as conducted by the EducationCenter for International Students, shallhold Advanced Japanese Language and

Culture Student status. NB. Students mustpossess level 2 of the Japanese LanguageProficiency Test and be enrolled in aJapan-related degree programme in orderto be admitted to this course.

Academic ProgrammeIn order to accommodate the aspirations of

individual students, Nagoya University hasdesigned a curriculum that flexibly combines acommon academic programme with the stu-dent’s major field of study. Moreover, in pro-viding four levels of semi-intensive Japaneselanguage instruction, and in making availableregular ‘major’ courses taught in both Englishand Japanese, Nagoya University has devised aprogramme equally suited to the needs of thosestudents with no previous Japanese languageinstruction, and those who have attained level 1of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

1. Common Academic ProgrammeThis programme consists of courses in the

Japanese language and Japan area studies. Themedium of instruction for the latter is English.

2. Courses in the Student’s ‘Major’Students are able to pursue their major field

of study through established courses, or coursesdesigned especially for NUPACE students. Thecore NUPACE curriculum is taught primarily inEnglish. Students who can demonstrate suffi-cient Japanese language ability (level 1 of theJapanese Language Proficiency Test), however,may register for regular courses taught inJapanese at their school of affiliation.

3. Guided Independent Study (GIS)In their second semester of study at Nagoya

University, Special Undergraduate Students

and Special Graduate Students may opt to takeadvantage of our Guided Independent Study(GIS) system. After consulting and obtainingpermission from their academic advisors, thesestudents may, with the co-operation of an acad-emic supervisor, pursue independent research intheir major field of study. This research work isevaluated and credits awarded accordingly.

CreditsThe minimum coursework requirement for

Special Undergraduate Students and Special

Graduate Students is ten credits per semester,whilst Advanced Japanese Language and

Culture Students take 28 credits over a one-yearperiod. Special Research Students are requiredto pursue research for a minimum of fifteenhours per week. At the end of their period ofexchange, all NUPACE students having earnedcredits are presented with an official transcriptof academic records specifying courses studied,evaluation of performance and credits awarded.The number of credits granted is determined bythe academic regulations of Nagoya Universityand is based on the number of hours studied.Upon examining the academic transcript, thestudent’s home institution may determine theappropriate number of credits to be granted atthat institution. Prospective students are askedto note that the granting of credits for the pur-pose of earning a degree falls under the jurisdic-tion of the student’s home institution.

Academic AdvisorA full-time faculty member whose field of

specialisation is close to that of the student’s‘major’ will be assigned to each student ashis/her academic advisor.

Academic CalendarThe academic year at Nagoya University is

divided into spring and autumn semesters:

1. Elementary Japanese I (autumn and spring; 4 credits; 10 hours perweek x 12 weeks; course co-ordinator:UKIBA Masachika)

This course is designed for students whohave little or no knowledge of Japanese. It aimsto develop the students’ working knowledge ofJapanese to the level where they can functioneffectively in everyday life. Emphasis is placedon improving oral skills, although students willalso be required to master the fundamentals ofelementary grammar and a limited number ofkanji (Chinese characters). The written contentof the course (100 kanji, a vocabulary of 800words) is approximately equivalent to level fourof the Japanese Language ProficiencyExamination.

2. Elementary Japanese II(autumn and spring; 4 credits; 10 hours perweek x 12 weeks; course co-ordinator:UKIBA Masachika)

This course is designed for those studentswho have had approximately 150 hours ofJapanese instruction at university level or whohave completed Elementary Japanese I atNagoya University. The main objective is toenable students to master the fundamentals ofpre-intermediate grammar patterns and toacquire a working knowledge of Japanese tohelp them function smoothly in Japanese soci-ety. Upon completion of the course studentsshould have mastered a total of 300 kanji andpossess a vocabulary of 1,800 words (approxi-mately equivalent to level three of the JapaneseLanguage Proficiency Examination).

3. IntermediateJapanese I (autumn and spring; 4 credits; 10 hours perweek x 12 weeks; course co-ordinator:UKIBA Masachika)

This course is designed for those studentswho have had approximately 300 hours ofJapanese instruction at university level or who

have completed Elementary Japanese II atNagoya University. The course aims to enablestudents to master grammatical patterns andexpressions found at the beginning-mid inter-mediate level and to develop a comprehensivemastered a total of 500 kanji and possess avocabulary of 3,000 words.

4. IntermediateJapanese II (autumn and spring; 4 credits; 10 hours perweek x 12 weeks; course co-ordinator:UKIBA Masachika)

Designed for students who have receivedapproximately 450 hours of Japanese instruc-tion at university level, or who have completedIntermediate Japanese I at Nagoya University.Although emphasis is placed on developing ahigh command of oral skills for the purpose ofcommunication in academic and non-academicsituations in Japan, students are also required toimprove their competency in listening, readingand writing. Upon completion of the course,students should have mastered a total of 700kanji and have acquired a vocabulary ofapproximately 4,500 words.

5. University-WideJapanese LanguageProgram(autumn and spring; 3 credits; 8 hours perweek x 12 weeks; course co-ordinator:LEE Tack Ung)

Students who have had approximately 600hours of Japanese instruction or more, andwhose Japanese language ability is of anadvanced level, are invited to join other interna-tional students, researchers and lecturers affiliat-ed to university departments in the University-wide Japanese Language Program.

NB. All students will be required to sit aplacement test and/or undergo an interview todetermine their Japanese language level.

1. ContemporaryJapanese Society(spring; 2 credits; 1 class per week; courseco-ordinator: NOMIZU Tsutomu)

This course introduces students to the mainfeatures of contemporary Japanese society, set-ting these in a historical as well as comparativecontext. Areas of focus include aspects ofJapanese law, the workplace, economy, mod-ernisation/internationalisation, and environmen-tal issues. The course shall take the form of lec-tures and discussion classes given by experts intheir fields, and shall include field trips to sitesof interest.

2. InterculturalCommunication (autumn; 2 credits; 1 class per week;course co-ordinator: FUDEUCHI Misa)

This course is designed to explore how cul-ture influences the individual’s perceptions,behaviour, identity and social norms by focus-ing on various aspects such as language, ges-

tures, family life and education. These topicswill be examined through readings, exercisesand discussion. This course is introductory andaims to enhance intercultural understanding forbettering one’s own interpersonal communica-tion with people of different backgrounds.

3. Introduction toJapanese History (autumn; 2 credits; 1 class per week;course co-ordinator: Claudia ISHIKAWA)

This course serves as a basic introduction toJapanese history, surveying the period from theJomon Era (circa 10,000 BC) to the end of theTokugawa Administration (1868). The lecturesfocus on the evolution of Japanese political sys-tems, other institutions and culture. Students areexpected to prepare for each class, participate inclass discussions, and to give mini-presenta-tions on the salient features of the major topicsof study.

4. Introduction toJapanese Politics (spring; 2 credits; 1 class per week; courseco-ordinator: Robert ASPINALL)

This course introduces students to the mainissues in contemporary Japanese politics.Subjects to be discussed include the electionsystem, the changing political party system, therole of the prime minister, the role of bureau-crats, and issues related to local politics. Thecourse is flexible, allowing time for students toexplore their own interests and keep up withcontemporary events and developments.Students will be expected to prepare papers andgive presentations on relevant topics.

5. Introduction to theJapanese Economy (autumn; 2 credits; 1 class per week;course co-ordinator: Natalie KONOMI)

This course is designed to be a basic intro-duction to the development and structure of theJapanese economy, with a focus on contempo-

rary institutions and issues. It provides anoverview of the contemporary Japanese econo-my and deals with Japan’s economic perfor-mance from the Meiji Restoration to the pre-sent. After a brief discussion of the process ofJapan’s economic development before WorldWar II, the course focuses on a number ofissues pertaining to the Japanese economy inthe postwar period. Topics that are coveredinclude: postwar macroeconomic performance(including the “high economic growth” periodand the causes of the economic miracle, theconsequences of the end of the miracle, theBubble Economy and the recession of the1990s); the macro-economic structure of theeconomy (consumption and saving, investment,the labour market); Japanese-style industrialrelations; the financial sector (public finance;banking), Japanese business organization (thefirm and the industrial group, the small businesssector), Japanese management practice (labourmanagement, production management andtechnical change).

Students should come away from this coursewith an understanding of the basic features ofthe economy as they are currently understood,plus an appreciation of the heavy strains on thesystem and the uncertainty concerning futurestructure and performance. We will use a widevariety of formats, from standard lectures toclass discussion, papers, tests and group presen-tations. A previous background in basic eco-nomics is helpful but is not a prerequisite forthis course.

6. Modern Japan and itsPost WWII InternationalRelations (spring; 2 credits; 1 class per week; courseco-ordinator: AKASHI Yoji)

The course surveys the history of Japan’semergence as a major power in the first threedecades of the 20th century. Afterwards, amajor part of the course is devoted to the studyof Japan’s post WWII international relations,focusing on four areas:

(1) The United States, which has played amajor role in helping Japan emerge as a world

economic power under the Japan-U.S. securityarrangement, maintaining political and econom-ic partnership.

(2) China, with which Japan had a love-haterelationship during the cold war period until1972. Although vexatious problems remaindue to Japan’s aggression and occupation ofChina in the past, Japan’s relationship withChina remains better than ever before as the lat-ter emerges a major trade partner.

(3) The Soviet Union/Russia, which Japanregarded as a major security threat during thecold war period and with which it still has anunresolved territorial dispute. Despite theabsence of a peace treaty, Japan-Russia rela-tions have improved as economic partners inthe development of Siberia.

(4) Southeast Asia, where Japan has been amajor donor nation in helping the region’s eco-nomic and technical development, as well as aleading investment and trade nation.

7. Science &Technology in Japan (autumn; 2 credits; 1 class per week;course co-ordinator: TABATA Akimori)

This course surveys the history of the devel-opment of science and technology in Japan andthe high-technology manufacturing industry oftoday. By making extensive use of videos andOHP, this series of far ranging lectures aims tobroaden the students’ knowledge and engagetheir interest in a variety of topics. By partici-pating in discussions, students are encouragedto examine Japan’s role in the fields of scienceand technology, identify problems characteristicof Japan in these fields, and to explore solutionsto them.

1. Advanced Studies inJapanese Language &Culture(1 year course commencing in autumn; 28credits; 30 hours per week in first semes-ter; 15 hours per week in second semester;course co-ordinator: MOMIYAMA Yosuke)

Using A Course in Modern Japanese, vol-umes three and four, the first semester of thiscourse enables students to bridge the gapbetween intermediate and advanced levelJapanese. In addition to textbook work, studentswill be offered an introductory course inJapanese language and culture, covering areassuch as linguistics, Japanese language teachingmethods, Japanese culture and internationalrelations.

The second semester comprises an integratedcourse in Japanese language and culture usingfirst-hand materials such as newspaper articlesand videotapes. Furthermore, students will berequired to prepare and present a research reporton a selected topic in Japanese. The course isdesigned for those students who wish to pursuean academic or professional career usingJapanese.

Prerequisites: Applicants are required to 1)be enrolled in a Japan-related study programmeas their major or as part of a combined majorand, 2) to have attained level 2 of the JapaneseLanguage Proficiency Test or equivalent. Anofficial academic transcript from a recognised

institution of higher education and an academicreference written by the student’s Japanese lan-guage instructor must be submitted.

Please note that enrolment to this course islimited to 2 students.

2. Global Society(autumn; 2 credits; 1 class per week;course co-ordinator: AKIYAMA Yutaka)

Shrinking space, shrinking time and disap-pearing borders are linking people’s lives moredeeply, more intensely, and more immediatelythan ever before. Introduction to CriticalDiscourse Analysis (spring; 2 credits; 1 class per week; courseco-ordinator: Edward HAIG)

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a newinterdisciplinary approach to the study of socialproblems such as globalisation, the environ-ment, gender issues and racism. As one of the

most radical (and controversial) fields in thehumanities, CDA differs from conventionalsociolinguistic approaches to social issues inthat it goes beyond mere description of textualphenomena to the interpretation and evaluationof the complex relationships between language,discourse, ideology and power. The course willconsist of four parts. First we will consider thetheoretical basis of CDA, locating this new

approach in relation to earlier and alternativeapproaches. Second, students will be introducedto some of the main methods of CDA. Third,working in groups, students will use CDA toconduct a brief investigation into an issue oftheir choice, concluding with a group presenta-tion. Finally, in light of their experience, stu-dents will be asked to reflect critically on thestrengths and weaknesses of CDA itself.

Each year the Association of InternationalEducation, Japan (AIEJ) offers scholarshipsunder the ‘Short-term Student ExchangePromotion Program’ for which NUPACE appli-cants are encouraged to apply. The programmeis intended to promote student exchangebetween universities in Japan and their overseaspartner institutions, thereby mutually enhancingthe quality of their educational and scholasticactivities whilst promoting understanding andfriendship between the countries participating.

1. Number ofScholarships

2,000 scholarships in the academic year 2004(April 2004 to March 2005), of whichNUPACE has received an allocation of 48(refer to p. 27 for a detailed breakdown).

2. Eligibility The scholarship is open to students who at

the time of application and admission toNagoya University are enrolled in regularcourses of study at institutions of higher educa-tion outside of Japan, and who meet the follow-ing conditions:1) Students must be enrolled at institutions hav-

ing concluded student exchange agreementswith Nagoya University (refer toInternational Exchanges on pp. 23~25) andhave their application accepted by NagoyaUniversity.

2) Students must possess excellent academicand personal records at their home institu-tions.

3) Students must demonstrate that they willbenefit from studying in Japan, and arerequired to produce a clear study plan withregard to their studies at Nagoya University.

4) Students must, for reasons of financial diffi-culty, be unable to finance their studies inJapan independently.

5) Students must, upon completion of the termof exchange, return to their home institutionsto resume their studies or to be awarded withtheir degrees.

6) Students must be eligible to obtain a ‘collegestudent’ visa for the purpose of study inJapan.

7) Students must not have previously beenrecipients of this scholarship.

NB. Students are permitted to apply forother scholarship awards, providing that thecombined value of additional scholarships doesnot exceed ¥80,000 per month.

3. Period of Study In principle, students may choose to study at

Nagoya University for between four and twelvemonths. In exceptional circumstances, studentsmay be permitted to study for a minimum peri-od of three months.

Foreign students intending to pursue studies in Japan must be in possession of a valid passport issued by their country ofcitizenship. They are also, prior to embarking for Japan, required to apply to the nearest Japanese diplomatic mission(embassy or consulate) for a ‘college student’ visa. A ‘college student’ visa will only be issued after the diplomatic missionobtains the applicant’s ‘Certificate of Eligibility for Status and Residence’

Nagoya University undertakes to apply for these ‘Certificates of Eligibility’ on the behalf of NUPACE students. Onceapplications have been processed, ‘Certificates’ are sent directly to prospective students. It is imperative that when applyingfor a ‘college student’ visa, students take their ‘Certificates of Eligibility’ and passports to the diplomatic mission. Studentsare also required to bring the ‘Certificates’ with them when they enter Japan to submit to the airport authorities.

1. ClimateThe climate of Japan, although generally

mild, is distinguished by its humidity andmarked seasonal changes. In general, autumn inNagoya is dry, cool, and pleasant. Winter(December to February) can prove cold withminimum temperatures of -5; (32,), highs of9; (48,), piercing winds and the occasionalsnowfall. Spring (March to May) is the time ofcherry blossoms and new beginnings, includingthe Japanese academic and fiscal years.Summer, heralded by the ‘rainy season’ in June,is extremely hot and muggy with temperaturespeaking at around 37; (99,) in August.Temperatures start to drop in mid-Septemberand around this time the Japanese archipelagoexperiences the ‘typhoon season’.

2. Housing Nagoya University operates one mixed

Japanese/international student dormitory,‘International Ohmeikan’, and two dormitories,‘Foreign Student House’ and ‘InternationalResidence’, expressly for the use of internation-al students. ‘International Ohmeikan’ housessixty international students; the latter two resi-dences contain a total of 144 rooms for singlestudents, twenty-five apartments for marriedcouples and two apartments for families. Inprinciple, NUPACE students are accommodat-ed in ‘International Ohmeikan’, a ten-minutewalk from Higashiyama campus. Each individ-ual room is fully furnished and installed with aunit bathroom. Kitchens are shared.

Due to a student housing shortage, enrolmentin NUPACE is in principle limited to fifty-fivestudents at any given time, all of whom areguaranteed university accommodation.However, in the event that the number of appli-cants exceeds this number, students, who arewilling to find their own accommodation inNagoya, may still be considered for admissionto the programme. 3. Health CareInternational students in possession of a one-

year ‘college student’ visa are required to jointhe Japan National Health Insurance (JNHI)programme. For a monthly fee of approximate-ly ¥1,000, JNHI policyholders are entitled to a70% discount on most medical and dental feesincurred. In addition, the Association ofInternational Education, Japan (AIEJ) offers amedical fee reimbursement programme for stu-dents with ‘college student’ visa status, throughwhich students are reimbursed 80% of medicalfees paid. By taking advantage of both the JNHIand AIEJ programmes, students can cover over90% of the cost of most medical and dental careduring their stay in Japan.

Nagoya University also houses a HealthAdministration Office at which emergencytreatment for illness and injury is performedfree of charge. The Office additionally serves torefer students to hospitals, where deemed neces-sary.

4. Counselling The majority of schools at Nagoya

University house international student coun-selling or exchange facilities at which overseasstudents have access to advice on matters con-cerning their studies and daily life in Japan. Incollaboration with these schools, the EducationCenter for International Students endeavours tomake the stay of overseas students a more com-fortable and fulfilling one by providing addi-tional advising and resource services. Thesecover a wide range of issues including adminis-trative procedures, relations with teaching staff,scholarships, accommodation, immigration andresidence procedures, family issues and health.

5. Computer AccessNUPACE students have access to computers

running on the Microsoft Windows operatingsystem, located on campus in the EducationCenter for International Students. Access isguaranteed on any weekday from 08:00 until19:00. Weekend and night-time access (until22:00) is available where a volunteer studentsupervisor has pre-registered to ensure the prop-er shutting down of computers.

6. ExtracurricularActivities

Nagoya University has a wide range of cul-tural and sports clubs, officially boasting fiftythree of the former and forty three of the latter,with a total membership of 3,500 students.These provide international and Japanese stu-dents with an excellent opportunity to mix, andthus participate in a cross-cultural learningexperience.

7. International StudentAssociations/Cross-cul-tural Exchange Groups

There is a host of volunteer groups involvedwith international students both amongst thecampus community and outside. These dependfor their existence on the co-operation of eachand every international student, and greatly con-tribute to enriching student and community life.

8. Exchange Activitiesoutside Nagoya

During the summer and winter vacations,various associations host home-visits or camp-ing activities. If taken advantage of properly,these present an excellent opportunity to deepenone’s knowledge of Japan at comparatively lit-tle cost. Home-visit possibilities include placesas far afield as Hokkaido and Kyushu.

Throughout the year, numerous events arestaged both on and off campus. Internationalstudents are warmly encouraged to take anactive part and thereby participate in, and con-tribute to, Japanese society at large.

9. Part-time Work International students wishing to engage in

activities for the purpose of earning money arerequired to apply for a work permit throughNagoya University. Where permission is grant-ed, students may work for a maximum of four-teen hours per week during the semester, and upto eight hours per day during long vacations.
