Lulu.com Printing Instructions For The Great Compassion Mantra Dharani Book I am not affiliated with Lulu.com in any way. I’ve found their site to be easy to use and the print quality of the books to be great. That’s the only reason I recommend it. In theory, you should be able to use the A5 formatted PDF file I’ve provided for the Great Compassion Mantra and get it printed from any professional printer or third-party print-on-demand site. To use Lulu.com, create an account, then near the top of the homepage, click on “ Create.” Then click on the option for “Print Book.” Scroll mid-way down the page and you’ll see the following: This dharani book will cost you about $3.81 to print. So it’s quite economical. (What it will cost to ship it to you will depend on where you live.)

To use Lulu.com, create an account, then near the top of the homepage, click on “Create.” Then click on the option for “Print Book.” Scroll mid-way down the page and you’ll see the following:

This dharani book will cost you about $3.81 to print. So it’s quite economical. (What it will cost to ship it to you will depend on where you live.)

See above screen shot to see which yellow-highlighted options you should select for the formatted PDF file I’ve provided. Binding: Perfect Bound Paperback Interior Print: Black & White on White Product Size: A5 (5.83” x 8.26”)

Scroll back up the page and click on the orange arrow, “Make this book.”

The next page you’ll be taken to prompts you to enter the title and author. What you input here is not important, since none of it will appear on the cover of your printed book (assuming you follow these instructions to the tee). Just put whatever you want here for reference. You’ll see I put “Great Compassion Mantra” for the title and for author I put down “Kuan Yin.” Hey, don’t put down my name. I didn’t author this dharani. Next, make sure you click the radio button “Make available only to me.” Then click “Save & Continue >>.”

Then click on that “Browse…” button, select the PDF file, which should be “Sacred Text - Great Compassion Mantra (A5 Formatted)” if you kept the file as its original name. Then click “Upload.”

This next part may take a while, so get comfortable.

You might get an error message like the one shown above. I clicked “Download” just to check what the issue was. I concluded there really wasn’t a glaring issue with low resolution, so I simply clicked “Save & Continue >>.”

Next you’ll be taken to the Cover Wizard. Okay, pay attention now. If you mess up on any of the coming steps, you’re going to get a really ugly cover, or at the very least, a cover you didn’t intend. So pay close attention.

You’re going to see on the screen something that looks like the above. You are going to change all of that. The final front and back cover design will look nothing like what you see above.

Start by clicking on the option “Layouts.” Then click on the option as circled in red above.

Click anywhere on the author byline or title. Here, as soon as I clicked my mouse on “Kuan Yin,” I got taken straight to a zoom-in of the byline and title. There’s also a pop-up text box. Here, highlight all text and delete it. Delete all text. Unless for some reason you want the title text to appear on your front cover. I think it looks goofy, so I delete.

After deleting the front cover text, it should look something like the above.

Now click on the spine of the book cover.

Again, the program will zoom in on the spine and highlight the text. Again, delete all text. Unless, of course, you want a title to appear on the spine. I’ll demonstrate what it might look like if you choose to keep a title on the spine of your book. But first, you’ll want to change the color of the spine.

Click on the option “Background” to change the background color of your book.

I’m going to go with a black background for my spine.

If you want a title to appear on the spine, then here, select your font type, font size, etc. I like to format my title as follows:

G R E A T C O M P A S S I O N M A N T R A

Personally, I like how the all-caps with the spaces in between each letter looks.

Now we’ve got to change that cover art. In the top right corner of the screen, click on the orange button “Add Image” and upload the cover design of your choice. Use any from the options I’ve provided in the zip file you should have downloaded for all cover options.

For my personal copy, I’m going with “Floral Medallions – Blue Gold.” And remember: you don’t have to use my given options. You can design your own.

Upload the image file and it will appear in the right-hand column as you see below.

Then click on the cover art, drag to drop where you see the front cover and then click on the cover art again and again, drag to drop where you see the back cover.

My final cover design looks like the above. I’ve opted to not include any text on the actual front or back covers, but “Great Compassion Mantra” appears along the spine.

You can also pair two different image files from the cover art options, so that the front cover features the dharani title in Chinese and the back cover is plain. Above and below are a few examples of how you might pair the image files.

If you’re designing your own cover art, here are the specs:

148 × 210 millimeters (5.83 × 8.27 inches) 300 dpi or higher for resolution

When you’re complete, you’ll get to summary page like above where you can review your project. Then click “Save & Finish >>.”

Now click on the button “Order a Proof Copy” and, well, order a proof copy. Follow the prompts to order and ship your printed book.

Never check out of Lulu.com before you go online to scour for coupon codes. Here, I’m using a coupon code “SHIPIT2018,” which gave me free shipping! That means the whole of the cost of getting this dharani book printed and shipped to me is $3.81.

Place your order and you’re done!
