LUIGI BUCCI, MD – SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Professor Luigi Bucci is Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Naples

Federico II, Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery. He is the Director of the Surgical

Coloproctology Unit in the same University Hospital.

Prof Bucci graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Naples “Federico II”, back in

1974, with honours and praise. He then started his training in General Surgery and also attended

several international fellowship in highly specialised Insitutions, such as the CLEVELAND

CLINIC, Ohio, USA in 1971, and KANTON HOSPITAL, in Basel, Switzerland, in 1976. He also

had a rotation at ST MARKS HOSPITAL, in London, UK, in 1979, where he focused the diseases

of the colon and rectum.

He qualified in General Surgery in 1979, and in Surgical Oncology in 1983, at University of

Naples “Federico II”, again with honours and praise.

He was always very much involved in gastrointestinal and oncological surgery, being

expert in the surgical treatment of bowel tumors, pelvic neoplasm, other than of inflammatory

bowel diseases. Among visceral neoplasms, he also has a special interest in abdominal

neuroendocrine tumors and he is now a member of the Centre of Excellence for the treatment of

Neuroendocrine Tumors in Naples (ENETS Centre of Excellence).

He has performed thousands of major abdominal procedures, mainly in the field of surgical

oncology.

He is also author and co-author of several papers published on highly impacted international

journals. He is Founding member of SICO (Italian Society of Oncology Surgery), SIED (Italian

Society of Digestive Endoscopy - in Campania), SIPAD (Italian Society of Gastrointestinal

Pathology), ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology), GIP (Italian Group of Proctology) and

member of Regional Oncological Commission.
