2016 was a remarkably intense year of activity and achievement for Lucy Guerin Inc. The company travelled to new horizons creatively and in reputation and reach.

We are very proud that our Artistic Director, Lucy Guerin, was honoured with two major awards in 2016: the Australia Council Award for Dance, which recognises the outstanding achievements and considerable contribution of an artist in dance; and the Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography for the full length work, Motion Picture, which premiered in 2015.

Lucy and the Company continued to be much in demand on the international stage, this year in France, Sweden and England. As detailed in the financial report on page 37, these activities brought in significant income. I have discussed in previous years’ reports that the Company must invest to develop new works and the returns are not immediate. In the case of Weather, the initial development in 2012 relied on operational funding. It is particularly satisfying that the enduring quality of this work was celebrated in a remount by one of our global peers, and rewarded by a profitable license fee.

Back in Australia, Lucy had no less than three new works in development, each of a very different character. The Dark Chorus premiered in the 2016 Melbourne Festival to great acclaim while Split was destined to premiere in Dance Massive 2017. Both have attracted interest from multiple national and international presenters. Attractor was a groundbreaking collaboration between LGI and Dancenorth and was performed to rapt audiences in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia in late 2016 and early 2017.

None of these productions would have been possible without the extraordinary drive of our Executive Producer, Annette Vieusseux. Annette also represented the Company extensively in relevant markets, opening new opportunities for future presentation of the Company’s work. As well as achieving a higher than budgeted surplus through disciplined management of the Company’s finances, Annette was instrumental in securing renewed funding commitments from Australia Council for the Arts and Creative Victoria. After the funding cuts and delays in process that dismayed the arts community in 2015, it was an enormous relief to return to a level of certainty in our financial position. We are of course perpetually grateful to the funding bodies that continue to show faith in the

Company.

This funding enables the company to fulfil its goal to develop and nurture the Australian contemporary dance sector through a packed studio program, as summarised in the preceding pages. In these straitened times, the support given by the Company to independent artists in the dance community is more valuable than ever. Our unflappable Company Manager, Claire Bradley Duke, runs the studio program and a mass of other administrative duties with great efficiency. Claire has also taken our on-line presence to a new level as set out on page 30.

While the talented team of Lucy, Annette and Claire has had such a richly productive year, they have also drawn on the support of the board to pursue our strategic directions for long-term sustainability. Each member of the board has contributed a great deal of their personal expertise and I thank them all for their commitment and care.

Artistic Director’s Report

ArtisticDirector’sReportLucy Guerin

2016 was a year of intense creative output for Lucy Guerin Inc and the Company’s commitment to studio based research continued to underpin the program throughout the year. It began with 3 international projects. The first was a remount of Black Box on Lyon Opera Ballet for presentation at Theatre de la Ville in Paris. A second remount, this time of Weather from Lucy Guerin Inc’s repertoire, on Swedish company Skanes Dansteater also premiered. Following this I created a new work for Rambert called Tomorrow, that premiered at Sadler’s Wells in London. Working for these three incredible companies and presenting work in large main-stage theatres was a great challenge and gave me an important insight into how other companies work.

Meanwhile, back in Melbourne the company continued its activities to support local dancers and choreographers with six studio residencies, including one for Jo Lloyd, our Resident Director for 2016. Jo’s time with the company offered mentoring in all aspects of making, presenting and touring dance, including board meetings, budgets, fundraising and planning. She also had support to develop her next work. First Run, our program for choreographers to present the early stages of an idea, to stimulate dialogue and feedback kicked off in February with the first of five for the year. There were three Hotbed workshops with international artists, Sarah Michelson, Chrysa Parkinson and Faye Driscoll, attended by local dancers and makers to share ideas and knowledge from across the globe. Lucy Guerin Inc housed youth dance company Yellow Wheel throughout the year including intensive Summer and Winter schools.

The second half of the year continued to focus on the development of new works here in Australia. Lucy Guerin Inc and Dancenorth from Townsville teamed up to work on Attractor, choreographed by Gideon Obarzanek and myself in collaboration with Indonesian music duo Senyawa. This work was rehearsed in Melbourne and Townsville with dancers from Dancenorth and had preview performances at Dancenorth in Townsville. The larger scale and collaborative nature of this project that brought two choreographers together with two companies and an international music group enabled a bigger scale work than the company could achieve alone.

I spent four weeks in the studio with dancers Melanie Lane and Lilian Steiner researching and rehearsing a new duet titled Split. After the larger scale works I had been making at the beginning of the year, it was a pleasure to spend some time in our own studio in an intimate exchange with two dancers. We engaged in a range of experimentation

with materials and movement and established the simple idea of continually dividing the space in half with white tape. This simple structural idea framed the piece and referenced shrinking time and space.

Our major project for the year was The Dark Chorus. It had its final development stage of four weeks and then premiered in Melbourne Festival in October at the Meat Market. The Dark Chorus used opposition and contrast to invoke an oppressive and destructive force. The company’s dancers excelled in this work and the lighting and costume design created a unique setting and atmosphere. In addition to the five dancers, 10 extra chorus members, who were seconded to the company throughout rehearsals joined the cast. This provided these emerging dancers with the experience of being involved in a production from rehearsal through to presentation.

Pieces for Small Spaces, our annual curated season for independent choreographers had an environmental sustainability focus in 2016. Choreographers were asked what this meant for them and to consider it more deeply when creating their pieces. Facilitator Matt Wicking, led an open workshop to explore the topic and consulted individually with the five artists to help articulate and realise their environmental goals. These were not necessarily the subject of the works but often related to how they were made and what materials they used. Once again, audiences came to this season with an open mind ready to engage with new ideas and experimentation from these artists.

We are still involved in ongoing negotiations for relocating the company to a venue that is better equipped for our purpose. Progress is being made slowly and the help of our Deputy Chair, Ian McDougall of ARM Architecture has been invaluable in guiding us through this unfamiliar territory. We are confident that many of the questions around this will be resolved in 2017.

Lucy Guerin Inc continues to invite audiences into a space where the body can assert its complexity and knowledge. 2016 was about creation. It premiered and seeded several new works that will have long lives on local and international stages. These successes are possible because of the Company’s dedicated Board chaired by Chloe Munro and the highly skilled management of Executive Producer Annette Vieusseux and Company Manager Claire Bradley Duke. The artists who work in the studio continue to drive the identity of the Company and to galvanise and inspire the contemporary dance scene in Melbourne and beyond.

“Guerin creates an intriguing world of shadows and light with a sinister beauty.” The Dark Chorus, Limlight Magazine, October 2016

The Dark Chorus -. Image by Gregory Lorenzutti

AchievingOurGoalsGoal 1 to create and present new contemporary dance works

The dramatic chorus is both the voice of the people and of your most intimate thoughts, a moving sculpture of bodies and concepts made flesh. The Dark Chorus is a command-ing new work that reaches back to the roots of ancient theatre to create something entirely of the now.

The chorus generates its own opposition. It is alluring and seductive but also controlling. The tensions of binaries; light and dark, past and present, abstract and literal, motion and stillness, sound and silence, internal and external, generate the elements of the performance. But in the end, the seduc-tion of these absolutes gives way to tragedy.

The Dark Chorus premiered on 6th October 2017 at the Meat Market as part of the 2017 Melbourne Festival and enjoyed an 8 show season playing to sell out audiences.

“[Guerin’s] choreography is always fearless, and this fascinating work is both beautiful and stark. Split showcases everything that’s exciting about dance as an art form.” Split - The Music, Bryget Chrisfield, 17 March 2017

I

In Split, dancers Melanie Lane and Lilian Steiner negotiate ever-diminishing dimensions of space and time. As our world contracts, the clock ticks faster, and bodies press closer.

An initial four-week development of the work was completed in July/August 2016, which concluded with an invite only showing of the work at the Lucy Guerin Inc studio. Extract from Lucy Guerin’s Director’s note:

“Split shifts between two bodies, reconciled and in conflict. The diminishing world that they inhabit induces competition, negotiation, harmony and aggression. They set their own parameters. Dividing the time length of each section and the amount of space for each, I also wanted to disrupt the harmony between the two dancers. We tried different costumes but that didn’t seem to read clearly. Having one naked and the other clothed created a split in identity that intensified the piece. For me it gives seriousness and normality to the female body, which is such a site of commodification, exploitation, shame and shock. I feel very sad sometimes about the never ending ways in which women must conform to a ridiculous ideal. In Split it is what the body does as much as what it is that is important.”

“Collaborating with Lucy Guerin is always an incredible experience. I consider her to be among the very best

as a collaborator internationally. Her work is always challenging, beautifully observed and masterfully executed.”

Indonesia’s tour-de-force music duo Senyawa along with Lucy Guerin and Gideon Obarzane, join forces with Dancenorth and Lucy Guerin Inc. Together they take you on a trance-noise odyssey that transcends all borders, a unique ecstatic music/dance ritual for non-believers.

Senyawa’s performance reinterprets the Javanese tradition of entering trance through dance and music as a powerful secular present-day form. Their sound borrows from the metal bands they listened to as teenagers – Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden – and Indonesian ritual and folk idioms.

“20 members of the audience join in on stage, dissolving the demarcation between dancer/non-dancer, audience/performer, the professional and the amateur, through this participatory act of doing” - Lucy Guerin Attractor had two development periods during 2016, the first Melbourne and the second in Townsville, which accumulated in a ‘soft premiere’ of the work performing two shows to Townsville audiences before it’s premiere in Melbourne at Asia TOPA festival in Feb 2017.

5 new short dance works 6 performances over 5 days Lucy Guerin Inc is dedicated to supporting local independent dance artists by offering a supportive, generous environment to create contemporary dance work. Pieces for Small Spaces is a program that does this effectively through commissions for five local choreographers to develop a short new work to form part of a performance season. It’s about developing choreographic process and finding a distinct voice for these choreographers’ ideas.

For 2016, Pieces for Small Spaces included a focus on environmental sustainability that was addressed by the choreographers involved in the season. Sustainability expert Matt Wicking was brought on to consult with the company and the participating artists. The Company considered it’s environmental impact throughout the season including electronic only programs and tickets, building audience awareness of their environmental impact, and providing low food mile refreshments. The artists spent time individually with Matt Wicking to consider the impact of their work and to discuss their concepts and sustainable ideas.

Goal 2 to develop and nurture the Australian contemporary dance sector at LGI’s hub in Melbourne

StudioResidenciesIn 2016 we offered six choreographers Studio Residencies, which allowed them to use the Lucy Guerin Inc Studio free of charge to work on a new contemporary dance project. Artists received administrative support to host showings, were encouraged to show work at First Run and have access to mentorship from Lucy Guerin and Lucy Guerin Inc staff. We introduced a new Out of Time residency model in 2016, which was provided to two out of the six residents. It allowed these artists to work in the studio out of normal business hours, utilising evenings, weekends and other pockets of free time throughout the whole year. This worked well for both the artists and the Company allowing flexibility throughout the year for the artists to work on various projects and it limited wasted studio time out of normal office hours.

Achieving Our Goals

“The opportunity to be Resident Director provides many practical benefits, but it also provides an important framing

and acknowledgement for the artist. To have the advice from Lucy in a mentor role has been incredible, I have gained immensely from the wealth of knowledge she has generously

passed on. The company as a whole is very inspiring, particularly the balance between the support it provides for

independent dancers in the community, alongside the quality of work Lucy produces.”

JoLloyd–ResidentDirector2016

ResidentDirectorProgramSince 2013 Lucy Guerin Inc has invited one choreographer each year to take up the position of Resident Director with the Company. The Company identified a need within the Australian dance sector to create a pathway for independent choreographers to transition into significant leadership roles. This position was created for choreographers approaching mid-career who are interested in running a company or developing a way of working more consistently than their current project funding allows. The Resident Director is encouraged to research what kind of model might be appropriate to support the type of work they are creating. This may include running a company and this position encourages a dialogue around sustainable artistic practice as a choreographer.

Jo Lloyd was employed as Lucy Guerin Inc’s Resident Director in 2016. Jo received support in the creation of a new work including free studio space and an annual fee, assistance in finding funds and presenting opportunities for her work, and mentoring in all aspects of running a company including an insight into Board meetings, budgets, and strategic planning. She was assisted to develop the skills of an Artistic Director – distinct from the skills of a choreographer, but essential for the successful running of a dance company or other organisational structure. Jo became our resident yoga teacher at the studio in 2016 taking our Friday yoga class every week. Jo was also engaged as co-curator for Pieces for Small Spaces providing invaluable mentorship for the five choreographers.

SecondmentsLucy Guerin Inc offers Secondment places to students, new graduates, and dancers in their first few years of professional practice. Secondees get a unique insight into the identity of the Company and the choreographic process currently in development by Lucy Guerin. This year ten secondments were giving the opportunity to perform in The Dark Chorus as the Chorus members. This provided an invaluable experience for the ten selected young students to be involved from development to presentation in a professional work. Overall during 2016 we engaged 20 Secondees during The Dark Chorus developments and presentations and ten during the first Attractor development period in Melbourne.

FirstRunA bi – monthly event, First Run invites artists working in and across the field of contemporary dance to share new explorations in their current practice. The intention is that the work shown is rough, raw, full of possibilities and open for discussion.

Two short pieces are presented in the Lucy Guerin Inc Studio, followed by a dialogue session with the artists, audience and a guest conversationalist. An important function of First Run is to enliven public discussion around contemporary dance and to give choreographers an opportunity to receive constructive critical feedback for future development of their works.

In 2016 Paea Leach continued her role of Facilitator and curator of the program alongside a different rotating Guest Conversationalist each month – to encourage new connections to artists, spark discussion and develop different formats for the evening.

RegularProfessionalDanceClassesLucy Guerin Inc classes are part of ongoing professional training opportunities for Lucy Guerin Inc dancers but are also open to local dancers. This is an essential aspect of our engagement with the dance community, and offers those from outside the Company the opportunity to refine and expand their practice alongside those employed by the Company. In 2016 we continued regular classes three times a week (Dance on Mondays & Wednesdays, Yoga on Fridays), whilst also continuing to offer classes full time during creative development periods for new Lucy Guerin Inc works.

Classes also offer important professional development opportunities to teachers, providing them opportunities to teach classes within a professional studio environment, allowing them to develop their teaching abilities and hone existing skills to ensure a high level of teaching within the sector for the future.

Yellow WheelAt our studio in West Melbourne, Lucy Guerin Inc houses Yellow Wheel, a youth dance Company run by Artistic Director Adam Wheeler and Company Manager Joshua Lowe. We provide them with studio space for classes, workshops and office space for administration whilst allowing them to maintain an independent and autonomous Company structure and providing mentorship to key Yellow Wheel personnel.

Throughout the year young people can connect with Yellow Wheel in a number of ways such as contemporary dance only Summer and Winter schools, weekly techniques classes, Showroom choreographic season and It’s A Dance Project (make a show in a day). “Lucy Guerin Inc’s support allows us to use our resources in creative processes rather than infrastructure. As a young company this has been vital in our development and growth. Without LGI’s in-kind studio support and company mentoring Yellow Wheel would not be able to create the works, programs and opportunities we provide for young Victorians every year”.

HotbedIn 2016 we presented three Hotbed workshops with three international choreographers. Hotbed is Lucy Guerin Inc’s workshop program for professional dancers and dance-makers. Workshops are led by local and international choreographers to encourage a broad understanding in the local dance community of current contemporary dance thinking and practice. The workshops are very low in price and participants are selected on application. In 2016 we had 15 participants at each workshop.

“I just wanted to thank you and Lucy again for having me in the studio during Lucy’s development of The Dark Chorus. I really enjoyed the experience - the dancers were all really lovely and it was great to see how Lucy works. The studio showing was also brilliant! It was really cool to witness and be a part of the process and then to see what it became”.2016 The Dark ChorusSecondee

Rambert, Britain’s oldest dance company, invited Lucy Guerin to commission a new work in early 2016. Following development rehearsals in London, Tomorrow, premiered alongside Shobana Jeyasingh’s Terra Incognita and Itzik Galili’s A Linha as part of Murder, Mystery And A Party at Sadler’s Wells, London in May 2016. Tomorrow inhabits the dark and dangerous world of Macbeth. ResidentDirectorJo Lloyd was employed as Lucy Guerin Inc’s Resident Director in 2016. The Resident Director is an annually appointed position, for which the artist is paid an honorarium. The role is developed individually for each artist in response to his or her areas of interest. As the Resident Director’s duties are intrinsically linked with artistic program delivery, a year-long work plan will be developed, negotiated, then contracted each January. A key function of the Resident Director is to increase the artistic efficiency and productivity of Lucy Guerin Inc by operating as an Assistant Director to Lucy Guerin when required. This provides Lucy Guerin with ongoing

dramaturgical support, programming options that may include working on a number of works simultaneously and ensures that rehearsals continue should Lucy be called away on other business. Further details about the Resident Director Program are contained on page 22.

EnvironmentalSustainability

The impetus to investigate and improve Lucy Guerin Inc’s environmental performance is driven by a sense of urgency and responsibility to preserving our natural world, combined with a strong desire to be at the forefront of environmental best practice initiatives within the Australian performing arts community. In an attempt to offset our carbon footprint, mostly created through international touring, in Dec 2016 we presented our annual Pieces for Small Spaces program with a sustainability focus. The Company engaged Matt Wicking as our ‘greenie-in-residence’ to consult with LGI staff and the contributing artists about sustainable arts practice. This project had a significant ripple effect within our community, demonstrating to other cultural organisations and audiences how the performing arts can creatively respond to urgent concerns about climate change. We did this through several initiatives such as we arranged a raffle during the season – each audience member was given raffle tickets on arrival to the show – the amount of raffle tickets was dependent on their mode of transport to the venue. For example if an audience member rode their bicycle, walked or caught public transport to the venue they received two tickets, if they drove they only received one. We arranged for local businesses to provide some gifts for the raffle. It was a massive success for the Company’s objective to find new, innovative ways to build an environmental awareness into the season, which was free to provide and very visible to audiences. Being asked the question ‘how did you travel’ and then being rewarded for their environmental efforts raised awareness and excitement in the crowd and also got everyone talking and thinking about their environmental responsibilities. We also arranged for locally-sourced, low food mile refreshments to be served at the wrap-up party for the season and local beer and wine sold at the bar pre and post performance. We included little signs letting audience know that we had selected particular refreshments to make a conscious effort to be kind to the environment. Audience members were also asked not to print tickets, but sign in at arrival. Programs were not printed but provided as an online version. We hope these efforts raised awareness to our audience members about sustainability and what small changes can be made to make a difference. In 2016 we also continued our efforts in the office to keep our paper use low and used recycled paper for printing, we also grew our digital methods in marketing (reducing the need to print collateral.)

Organisational Structure Financial Report

FinancialReportLucy Guerin Inc delivered an outstanding quality of artistic output with relatively small overhead costs and management. It is a financially stable organisation, closing 2016 with reserves of $118,789 (reserves ratio of 17% of 2016 turnover).

The Company’s financial outcomes for 2016 differ slightly from the forecast budget:

Turnover of $699,662; forecast $710,981, variance of -$11,319

Surplus of $10,055; forecast $7,306, variance of +$2,749

These minor variances are due to several factors:

• TheCompany’screativefocusin2016wasondeveloping new work rather than touring, reducing potential presenter income and touring grants

• TheinternationalcommissionofTomorrow and Swedish licensing of Weather together generated $47,168 profit, thereby subsidising the development of premiere of The Dark Chorus

• The Dark Chorus was delivered well below anticipated expenses due to no major IT, set or lighting purchases. The commissioning fee from Melbourne Festival covered 37% of the production’s expenses generated in 2016. This project was also successful in attaining a $35,000 Australia Council project grant. LGI also ran the bar at the venue, generating a modest income line of $4,178

• Theexpensesincurredinlate2016fortheremount and international airfares and freight of the 2017 Jan/Feb tour of Motion Picture were covered by a $60,000 grant from Catalyst

• ThedevelopmentofSplit, which has since premiered in Dance Massive 2017, had lower production expenses than forecast
