Who or what is Lucifer? You might find yourself asking that very question one day.

When you look to the originating sources you may find that the information does not

coincide with what you learned by either oral tradition or cultural transference. I think

it's important to examine these ideas for yourself and to do your own investigative work.

It may start with a fundamental question: Why do people believe Lucifer is the Devil?

This paper is a summary of the research work I've conducted over the years, and the

intended meaning of Lucifer in each context used. Typically, when I begin my research I

look to the etymology of the terms. Language can lead you to sources you may not have

considered. There is vocabulary, and there is language. Language includes context to

convey meaning. Cultural context is important when seeking to understand the evolution

of terms and what they mean; which brings me to a point to address, the distinction of

definition and meaning. Reference works, typically provide definition. The most

common reference resources used are Dictionaries, and Encyclopedias. I consider

Dictionaries as a point of reference intended to initiate one into a path of research. That

research will provide other references used to extrapolate meaning. There are a number

of reference works one could use to conduct research.1 This is a jump-off point, to

conduct your research.

1 Almanac - a book of information in specific fields, often by date

Atlas - a set of maps, often of geographical locations

Book by category - books listed in their category

Citation index - lists which publications cite other publications

Concordance - a list of every word in a book, and where it is used in that book

Dictionary or Lexicon (the latter generally provides more grammatical analysis) - an alphabetical

listing of words and their definitions

Directory - a list of references, used for ease of locating their subject

Encyclopedia - a comprehensive compendium

Gazetteer - a geographical dictionary

Grammar - a book in which aspects of the grammar of a language can be looked up

Handbook - a manual which summarizes a subject

Mathematical tables - a tabulation of mathematical results

Pharmacopoeia - is a book containing pharmaceutical drug specifications.

Periodical index - a list of topics for a periodical publication, organized by date

It may lead you to other reference works, and even more still. You begin to paint a

picture within a frame. The larger the frame becomes, the picture expands, as does your

understanding. One of the most commonly used references cited for the origins of

Lucifer is The Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Smith. You

can look to version 3, page 346 for the use of Lucifer, as it relates to the Phosphorus

mythology.

I am adding the complete reference here, for ease of use:

PHOSPHORUS, or as the poets call him 4wcr<f>6pos or •fcaea^opos (Lat.

Lucifer}, that is, the bringer of light or of Eos, is the name of the planet Venus,

when seen in the morning before sunrise (Horn. II. xxiii. 226 ; Virg. Georg. i. 288

; Ov. Met. ii. 115, Trist. i. 3. 72.) The same planet was called Hesperus (

Vesperugo, Vesper, Noctifer or Nocturnus) when it appeared in the heavens after

sunset. (Horn. //. xxii. 318 ; Plin. //. N. ii. 8 ; Cic. De Nat. Deor. ii. 20 ; Ca-tull.

62, 64 ; Horat. Carm. ii. 9. 10.) Phosphorus as a personification is called a son of

Astraeus and Eos (Hes. Theog. 381), of Cephalus and Eos (Hygin. Poet. A sir. ii.

42), or of Atlas (Tzetz. ad Lye. 879). By Philonis he is said to have been the father

of Ceyx (Hygin. Fab. 65 ; Ov. Met. xi. 271), and he is also called the father of

Daedalion (Ov. Met. xi. 295), of the Hesperides (Serv. ad Aen. iv. 484), or of

Hesperis, who became by his brother Atlas the mother of the Hesperides. (Diod.

iv. 27 ; Serv. ad Aen. i. 530.)

In addition, you can look to artifacts to cross reference the written references to obtain

cultural mores:

"EOSPHOROS and HESPEROS were the gods of the star (astron planeta) Venus.

They were originally regarded as two quite distinct divinities--the first, whose

name means "dawn bringer," was the god of the dawn-star, while the second,

"Evening," was the star of dusk. The two star-gods were later combined.

In Greek vase-painting Eosphoros-Hesperos was as a youthful man, either in the

form of a bust surrounded by the shining orb of his star, or as a winged god

holding a torch and crowned with a starry aureole."2

Once you delve into the Greco-Roman world, you realize rather quickly, that the Greeks

and the Romans used mythology in different ways. Greek gods, were often Romanized,

often changing their attributes and how the gods were used in Roman society vs. Greek.

Many of these gods can be traced to the Etruscans, and other pre-Roman Italic cultures.

The Greeks often used mythology as a teaching modality, the Romans had a strong focus

on veneration of gods, creating a cultus to each divinity and devotional observances. For

the last decade, I have been using Greco-Roman symbolism, and I have found it is the

most prominent in personal resonance3.

"The Romans designated him by the names Lucifer and Hesperus, to characterize

him as the morning or evening star.5"

"PHO′SPHORUS (Phôsphoros),or as the poets call him Heôsphoros or

Phaesphoros (Lat. Lucfer), that is, the bringer of light or of Eos, is the name of

the planet Venus, when seen in the morning before sunrise The same planet was

called Hesperus (Vesperugo, Vesper, Noctif or Nocturnus) when it appeared in

the heavens after sunset. 6"

Most of what we know about Roman life and mythology comes from poets, philosophers

and Roman historians. A study of the culture will reveal that it was common practice for

the Romans to exaggerate and embellish to give the Roman Empire the essence of

strength and longevity. Even if a battle was lost, the historians would record it as a

victory for future generations of Roman citizens to see the unwavering power of the

mighty empire. This is an important element to keep in mind, with the advent of

Christianity, which would take existing myths and evolve them into a seemingly new

mythos cycle. Lucifer was used in a variety of ways to designate the fall of a Babylonian

King, and to Jesus himself, the star of the morning. The language development is

something one should take special care, the devil is always in the details.

The Hebrew in Old Testament did not always translate properly to other languages such

as Greek or Latin. At times, words were abandoned and texts were paraphrased.

Transliteration from Latin to English made the elements of these stories even more

problematic as it would lead the scribes to tell new tales7. The birth of these ideas came

from the very texts being transcribed. Lucifer was typically used as a designation. It did

not become a being engaging in a war in heaven, until works such as Dante's Divine

Comedy8, and John Milton's Paradise Lost

9 were released into the world. They were the

most influential during this time period, but especially when translating archaic texts. In

some cases you will find people quoting these texts more directly, as if the content is in

the bible! One only need to read the chapters in the scriptures to see the intended usage

and meaning in the Christian Mythos.

Ezekiel 2810

, is very telling of the intention of use.

1 And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying:

2 `Son of man, say to the leader of Tyre: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because thy

heart hath been high, And thou dost say: A god I [am], The habitation of God I

have inhabited, In the heart of the seas, And thou [art] man, and not God, And

thou givest out thy heart as the heart of God,

3 Lo, thou [art] wiser than Daniel, No hidden thing have they concealed from

thee.

4 By thy wisdom and by thine understanding Thou hast made for thee wealth,

And makest gold and silver in thy treasuries.

5 By the abundance of thy wisdom, Through thy merchandise, Thou hast

multiplied thy wealth, And high is thy heart through thy wealth.

6 Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because of thy giving out thy heart as

the heart of God,

7 Therefore, lo, I am bringing in against thee strangers, The terrible of the nations,

And they have drawn out their swords Against the beauty of thy wisdom, And

they have pierced thy brightness.

8 To destruction they bring thee down, Thou diest by the deaths of the wounded,

in the heart of the seas.

9 Dost thou really say, `I [am] God,' Before him who is slaying thee? And thou

[art] man, and not God, In the hand of him who is piercing thee.

10 The deaths of the uncircumcised thou diest, By the hand of strangers, for I

have spoken, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.'

11 And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying:

12 `Son of man, lift up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, And thou hast said to

him: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Thou art sealing up a measurement, Full of

wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

14 Thou [art] an anointed cherub who is covering, And I have set thee in the holy

mount, God thou hast been, In the midst of stones of fire thou hast walked up and

down.

15 Perfect [art] thou in thy ways, From the day of thy being produced, Till

perversity hath been found in thee.

16 By the abundance of thy merchandise They have filled thy midst with

violence, And thou dost sin, And I thrust thee from the mount of God, And I

destroy thee, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire.

17 High hath been thy heart, because of thy beauty, Thou hast corrupted thy

have set thee, to look on thee,

18 From the abundance of thy iniquity, By the perversity of thy traffic, Thou hast

polluted thy sanctuaries, And I bring forth fire from thy midst, It hath devoured

Zidon, And I have been honoured in thy midst, And they have known that I [am]

Jehovah, In My doing in her judgments, And I have been sanctified in her.

23 And I have sent into her pestilence, And blood into her out-places, The

wounded hath been judged in her midst, By the sword upon her round about, And

they have known that I [am] Jehovah.

24 And there is no more to the house of Israel A pricking brier, and paining thorn,

Of all round about them -- despising them, And they have known that I [am] the

Lord Jehovah.

26 And they have dwelt on it confidently, And builded houses, and planted

vineyards, And dwelt confidently -- in My doing judgments, On all those

despising them round about, And they have known that I, Jehovah, [am] their

God!'

Prophetical context of the King of Tyre is a culmination of the spirit of carnal pride, self-

sufficiency of the whole state. What we call the Phoenicians today, were the Canaanites

as they referred to themselves. This chapter addesses the rivalry between Tyre and

Sidon... At one point, the King of Tyre pronounces himself a Deity. This was common

practice in those days, and there were many cultures which practiced auto-deification

(Egypt for example). The Divine Right of King, was in practice until well into the

1700's. As recently as 100 years ago, Russia was instituting the Divine Right of Kings.

The above identifications of the Hebrew stones with the tribes and with stones known

to us are the most commonly accepted but other theories exist.

These verses have been understood as also allude to a mystical being, a kind of angel

who was expelled. This person was identified by Greek Jews with Lucifer and with the

Satan. Later the Christians took this identification up. As seen in Isaiah:

[Isaiah 14:12]11

HOW ART THOU FALLEN FROM HEAVEN, O LUCIFER, SON OF

THE MORNING! HOW ART THOU CUT DOWN TO THE GROUND, WHICH

DIDST WEAKEN THE NATIONS!

"LUCIFER, SON OF THE MORNING" in Hebrew "Hilel ben

Shachar". Here Babylon is

epitomized by a prince of Tyre

who like Babylon ascribed to

himself divinity.

Christian tradition identified

"Lucifer" with an angel who

rebelled against God and

became the Satan or devil. A

whole doctrine has developed around this concept; even

if, it was taking elements completely out of context. So,

to use the Ezekiel, as proof' of Satan, Lucifer, or

Cherubim as beings is not quite accurate. A

misunderstanding and misrepresentation of meaning is

what paved the way for the doctrine of New Testament.

Oh Venus, sun of the

Dawn!

The Bible is a complete occult work!

Ezekiel 112

, is another interesting

chapter that I urge you to read. It is

often taken literally to provide evidence

of Cheribum as literal creatures, some

even go as far as lending it as evidence

to support aliens, alien abductions, and

making 'God' the Alien Creator or

overseer. Thereby making the son of

'God' an alien!

This is what Ezekiel's vision would translate to if taken literally.

Ezekiel 1

1 And it cometh to pass, in the thirtieth

year, in the fourth [month], in the fifth

of the month, and I [am] in the midst of

the Removed by the river Chebar, the

heavens have been opened, and I see

visions of God.

2 In the fifth of the month -- it is the fifth year of the removal of the king

Jehoiachin --

3 hath the word of Jehovah certainly been unto Ezekiel son of Buzi the priest, in

the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar, and there is on him there a hand of

Jehovah.

4 And I look, and lo, a tempestuous wind is coming from the north, a great cloud,

and fire catching itself, and brightness to it round about, and out of its midst as the

colour of copper, out of the midst of the fire.

5 And out of its midst [is] a likeness of four living creatures, and this [is] their

appearance; a likeness of man [is] to them,

6 and four faces [are] to each, and four wings [are] to each of them,

7 and their feet [are] straight feet, and the sole of their feet [is] as a sole of a calf's

foot, and they are sparkling as the colour of bright brass;

8 and hands of man under their wings -- on their four sides, and their faces and

their wings -- [are] to them four;

9 joining one unto another [are] their wings, they turn not round in their going,

each straight forward they go.

10 As to the likeness of their faces, the face of a man, and the face of a lion,

toward the right [are] to them four, and the face of an ox on the left [are] to them

four, and the face of an eagle [are] to them four.

11 And their faces and their wings are separate from above, to each [are] two

joining together, and two are covering their bodies.

12 And each straight forward they go, whither the spirit is to go, they go, they

turn not round in their going.

13 As to the likeness of the living creatures, their appearances [are] as coals of

fire -- burning as the appearance of lamps; it is going up and down between the

living creatures, and brightness [is] to the fire, and out of the fire is going forth

lightning.

14 And the living creatures are running, and turning back, as the appearance of

the flash.

15 And I see the living creatures, and lo, one wheel [is] in the earth, near the

living creatures, at its four faces.

16 The appearance of the wheels and their works [is] as the colour of beryl, and

one likeness [is] to them four, and their appearances and their works [are] as it

were the wheel in the midst of the wheel.

17 On their four sides, in their going they go, they turn not round in their going.

18 As to their rings, they are both high and fearful, and their rings [are] full of

eyes round about them four.

19 And in the going of the living creatures, the wheels go beside them, and in the

living creatures being lifted up from off the earth, lifted up are the wheels.

20 Whither the spirit is to go, they go, thither the spirit [is] to go, and the wheels

are lifted up over-against them, for a living spirit [is] in the wheels.

Page 11: Lucifer Proper by SIN JONES

SIN JONES, updated January 7, 2013

21 In their going, they go; and in their standing, they stand; and in their being

lifted up from off the earth, lifted up are the wheels over-against them; for a living

spirit [is] in the wheels.

22 And a likeness [is] over the heads of the living creatures of an expanse, as the

colour of the fearful ice, stretched out over their heads from above.

23 And under the expanse their wings [are] straight, one toward the other, to each

are two covering on this side, and to each are two covering on that side -- their

bodies.

24 And I hear the noise of their wings, as the noise of many waters, as the noise of

the Mighty One, in their going -- the noise of tumult, as the noise of a camp, in

their standing they let fall their wings.

25 And there is a voice from above the expanse, that [is] above their head: in their

standing they let fall their wings.

26 And above the expanse that [is] over their head, as an appearance of a sapphire

stone, [is] the likeness of a throne, and on the likeness of the throne a likeness, as

the appearance of man upon it from above.

27 And I see as the colour of copper, as the appearance of fire within it round

about, from the appearance of his loins and upward, and from the appearance of

his loins and downward, I have seen as the appearance of fire, and brightness [is]

to it round about.

28 As the appearance of the bow that is in a cloud in a day of rain, so [is] the

appearance of the brightness round about.

What does it really mean? There is a fairly decent lecture conducted on the meaning of

Ezekiel 1 by William Hamblins, 2008 SANE Symposium: "What is the Chariot in

Ezekiel 113

?"

Mr. Hamblins, addresses some of the finer points of the symbolism, essentially he is

drawing our attention to astronomical events vs. literal Cheribum fighting the war of

heaven. I'd like to add that the Book of Revelations, is the climax of the mythos, the

battles between kingdoms14

, the interpretations of the ultimate smack down between good

and evil, can be traced to memes15

created by Hellenized Jewish-Christians, but can

especially traced to Plato's declaration of God as the embodiment of goodness, making an

embodiment of evil a necessary element to create such a contrast possible. Even though,

in Plato’s own words he claims that God cannot be described; aside that it is goodness16

For other relevant chapters on Cheribum, I suggest: Genesis 3, Exodus 25, Exodus 26,

Exodus 36, Exodus 37, 1 Kings 6, 2 Chronicles 3, 2 Chronicles 5, Hebrews 9, Ezekiel

41.

I consider these to be the primary resources for developing Luciferian symbolism:

1. The Phoenician use of Helel

2. Greek Mythology dealing with Eosphorus

3. Roman poetry, Virgil's Georgics and Ovid's Metamorphasis

4. The Vulgate

5. John Milton's Paradise Lost

6. Dante's Divine Comedy

Taking from each resource we can see the pattern of information which leads to the

theme of the fall of man from grace.

I will use #1, as an example:

One of the most interesting things about what we know about the Phoenician's

(Canaanites) is that they took on the name of the place in which they lived (city/states).

From what I understand of Canaanite scriptures, Helel is identified as Lucifer, son of

Shahar and leader of the Nephelim.

The Canaanite version of the passage in

Isaiah 14:12-14

How hast thou fallen from heaven,

Helel's son Shaher!

Thou didst say in thy heart, I will ascend

to Heaven.

Above the circumpolar stars I will raise

my throne

And I will dwell on the Mount of Council

in the back of the North

I will mount on the back of a cloud.

I will be like unto Elyon.

Page 13: Lucifer Proper by SIN JONES

This passage is important in understanding the development as Lucifer as the Morning

Star. Venus is typically associated with the female goddess vs. a male fallen angel. Thus,

it would be understood that Lucifer would be 'daughter' of the dawn, vs. 'son' as is taught

and written in the Hebrew. As I mentioned, it’s important to understand how the

Phoenicians titled themselves. For instance, if they lived at Mt Lel, and El resides there

(El being the entitlement of gods) it would be Hel of Lel. Thus, Hel-lel, may be a joining

of two concepts. So rather than taking it literally, symbolically it would be god of Mt

Lel. When discussing Mt Lel, typically associated with a particular mountain, the Light

of the Dawn, would be first seen from above the peak of the Mountain top.

In the Hebrew language, Elohim, was used both singularly and plurally to denote god or

gods. The early Hebrews were polytheistic, and seeing that they copied the verse above

nearly verbatim, it gives us a glimpse of what the verse was intended to communicate to

the reader.

The Queen of Heaven in conjunction with solar symbolism is throughout my personal

paradigm; often presented through the written and spoken word and artwork as well.

This perplexes people, and often compels their own imagining and projection of my

person . I'm often referred to as a Heretical or left-hand-path Christian. It makes me

smile the Devil's grin, for the light of Lucifer is lost to them. It's certainly a stratification

measure which allows me to distinguish occultists from occultniks.

Venus is the first light ushering in the dawn; symbolic representations of the sun rising

and setting. Venus was most beautiful, nothing could compare to this light of beauty.

The designation of Lucifer was applied to the goddess Diana, as the Queen of Heaven,

designated as Diana Luciferi. Celebrations in her honor such as Nemoralia - Diana’s

Day, are a festival of lights celebrated on the 13th of August. Diana is the huntress of the

wild, expressed through the beauty of her light. Her temple was built at Lake Nemi in the

Classical World; a procession of devotees walks with candles through the woods to her

temple. The light, is a representative of life. The torch carried for Diana Luciferi

represents the first light a child sees at birth, the light of healing and health, and the

protectress of all life. The Spring and Summer months were primarily vegetarian, and

observed with the cycles of the hunt. Come Autumn, the lazy days of the warmer months

comes to an end, and work resumes putting meat back on the menu. It is for that reason

that Diana Luciferi, is the patron goddess of hunters (and those on the hunt).

Page 14: Lucifer Proper by SIN JONES

SIN JONES, updated January 7, 2013

I strongly recommend a study in Roman Religio, many of the mythological symbols are

given deeper meaning, and perhaps will offer some clarity to those readers who are

genuinely interested in understanding the development of Lucifer. Its attributes and how

diverse forms of Luciferianism are born from this symbolism. It would not surprise me at

all, if the researcher comes away with their own understanding and use of the symbolism

that differs from my own.

The hunt: A quest for knowledge and truth. Light=remembering, Night=forgetting. Each

day, it would serve us well, to focus on the cycles of remembering ourselves as well as

forgetting ourselves. Thus, a fall from heaven, could be used to symbolize the attempted

ascension of godhood, but continued suffering of feeding the universe from the base of

the mountain. Each day, with the dawning of Venus, the remembering can be worked on

each day with the sun. I also see a tie in with Setian17

ideology, and the Coming Forth by

Night18

. I'm not a big fan of duality myself, so my intent is not to insert it here. But rather

focus on the idea that while you are coming forth by day, in the dream world, you can

also come forth by night. I think this ties in rather well with the 'Atheism by day' and

'Theism by Night' idea being developed more and more in occult circles. I am Hermetic

in thought, thus see no literal difference between Atheism and Theism, in an occult

context. I understand the need to write on these subjects more aggressively, in lieu of

supplanted dualism in most Western cultures.

Evil, is applied to Lucifer, attributed to the post-transliteration interpretations. For

example Lucifer's Emerald, or Lucifer's Lens was a device used by the Roman Emperor

Nero for seeing.19

The Emerald was viewed as a diabolical device as Nero looked on as

Christians were fed to the lions. How ever did Lucifer become a representative of all

things diabolical? If the meme is planted, and enough people lend it belief, it continues

on, evolves slightly, and is extremely difficult to divorce the

idea attached to another like a blood sucking parasite.

Difficult, but not impossible. As Lucifer progresses, it

evolves with time.

The Emerald of Lucifer, is later tied to Arthurian legends20

,

the Utopian Kingdom with the Idealic King leading his

subjects into peace, prosperity and joy. The Emerald, became

a holy grail, the source of power eternal. Juxtaposed, you can

see the regression back from diabolical to romantic.

As more and more Luciferians and Satanists embrace Lucifer, they look to the origins

and find Lucifer an expression of beauty, light, gnosis and enlightenment.

"If Satan is the dog that bites, Lucifer is the dog that bites with reason" 21

Satan and Lucifer, while seemingly separate ideals have become joined in a harmonious

unity while destroying duality. Satan: the brute force and carnal nature, and Lucifer the

maternal reasoning behind such pursuits.
