The Freedom Song was created in 2005 in a rescue shelter at Southern Universi ty just after Hurr icane Katr ina devastated the Gulf Coast. Whi le working with the Red Cross, Luc met a group of ta lented, energet ic chi ldren in this shelter and the song was born.

I t or ig inated as a way to pass the t ime and upl i f t the other residents in the shelter, and soon became a ral ly ing song for their temporary home.

A month later, memories of the exper ience and of the song cal led Luc back, and with a f inancial g i f t f rom his grandfather, Luc returned to the shelter to try to track down the chi ldren. He found them just before they were being re- located to tra i lers, and gathered them together to s ing once again, in the hopes of f inding a way to record this exper ience.

Heal ing Place Church opened their doors and without hesitat ion donated their h igh-tech media studio to the project for several days. Al l of the parents of the chi ldren were completely support ive and did what they could to help get th is song out to the world. Joel le, the young man singing back-up chorals in the chorus, was twelve at the t ime, the stunning young gir l in the verse was 10, and the rest of the kids were under 8.

The f inal recording of the song was completed exact ly one day after the chi ldren and their fami l ies had moved into their new trai ler homes, fol lowing more than two months’ of shelter l i fe.

The Freedom Song is an example of the bir th of art through struggle, hope and inspirat ion, and the generosity of many. New Orleans is far f rom ful l recovery and hopeful ly the Freedom Song wi l l inspire the cont inuing kindness of th is nat ion to help this great, magical c i ty.
