Opening message

Hey, AMS Member! Here you are, opening up this application kit. I bet you’re unsure of what this Leadership Training Seminar thing (LTS) is. A question running through your head might be: “Why? Is this just some kind of ploy by AMS to get me to be more active?” Let’s go through those two questions. I’ll start with answering the second question, because by answering it, I can transition into my answer as to why we’re actually staging the 2nd run of the LTS. LTS is AMS’ way of giving our members a chance to look at who they are and determine what they are truly passionate about. This year, we’ll be focusing on passion, and we want our applicants to know how to truly explore the depths of having something to rally around. It is our sincerest hope that the seminar will be YOUR stepping-stone to finding YOUR passion. No, this is not AMS driving into your heads that we want to be your passion. We would appreciate it greatly if we find that Mathematics is your passion, and that you have a plan for the world using Mathematics. We, however, treat it as a greater success if we set you on the path toward what it is you really want to do with your life from this point onward. I entreat you to apply and make the most of this opportunity. The venue has yet to be announced, but the dates are sure: October 25-27. A famous Atenean once said: Lundagin mo, beybe. Take that leap of faith. Dare to be limitless. Dare to make a difference. I’ll be expecting to see your app form. In humble service, MARC HELTON SUA President Ateneo Mathematics Society

Illuminate? What is

Illuminate. Shed light on. Free from ambiguity. Even in the strictest sense, "illuminate" can't go too far away from "make things clear." Leadership. Guiding a flock? Telling everyone what to do and where and how and why? Consulting, facilitating discussions, not settling for anything less than a consensus? Leadership's many forms are a great source of freedom. And confusion. Whom do you lead? Which cause do you support? How do you go about things? What are you capable of? Where are your boundaries? Whom can you turn to? Do you have to be strong all the way? Is it wrong to showcase vulnerability, admit to having flaws? What are you passionate enough about to spend a good majority of your life doing? We don't know. A thing about illumination: it doesn't have to be from the outside in. We're no psychologists, but wouldn't you agree if we said lessons that stick do so because of unspoken epiphanies? We see drawings and symbols. We perceive technically disjoint pieces of information. The connections? Arguably partly if not near entirely personal. We all need guides. A north star. Without interaction, we wouldn't get anywhere close to somewhere. But when the dust clears, who else can best say what you can and cannot see? Illuminate. This Leadership Training Seminar isn't about us telling you what to do or where to go or why you have to choose this among others. It's about you exploring yourself, asking yourself questions you want to ask, giving your own potential a chance to be heard. It's about you allowing us to hold your hand in order to one day let go and hold someone else's. It's about you turning on your internal light before looking around in search of a good piece of land to perch on. Light. Lighted. With us, like us, you are both.
