Standard: Designed to handle a wide variety of formations.

Reaming Shells

The recommended practice is to alternate two reaming shells in eachhole drilled to maintain hole diameter. Upon bit changes, the reamingshell should be checked for wear with the bit and shell wear gauge.Failure to observe these recommended practices will result in either apoorly stabilized bit or an undersized hole that will require costlyreaming.

Casing ShoeThe inside diameter of the casing shoe is not set with diamonds andis flush with the inside diameter of the casing, permitting free passageof the core barrel past the casing shoe.

Applications:• The casing shoe is threaded to the end of the casing string for

penetration through overburden.• Assists in seating the casing into the bedrock, providing a tight

seal for the drilling fluids to flow through to the surface.• Used to ream the casing downward when advancing a casing

string in an existing hole with the rod string still in place.

Casing BitThe inside diameter of the casing bit is set with diamonds and issmaller than the casing shoe. It will not permit the passage of thecore barrel.

Bit and Shell Wear GaugeAs good practice, the diameter of impregnated bits and reamingshells should be measured. This will ensure that the hole size ismaintained. Impregnated bits typically maintain their gauge untiltotally consumed.All holes should be collared with a full gauge reaming shell. Ondeeper holes, two or more shells should be alternated in the hole tomaintain the hole size. Reaming shells should be gauged frequentlythroughout drilling operations to avoid costly reaming of undersizedholes.

Corrugated or Flat FaceFor impregnated bits with a kerf width over 7.5mm (0.30”) thestandard crown profile is corrugated, and flat for kerf widths equal toor under 7.5mm (0.30”).

Non-Coring BitsTheir design provides reinforcement of the center of the bit to preventexcessive wear of this critical area. Various center designs, includingpencil core and crowsfoot types, are available to suit your particularneeds. Water courses are carefully engineered to provide fast andcomplete evacuation of the cuttings produced by this type of tool,thereby increasing the penetration rates in all types of formations andincreasing bit life. Other non-coring bits are available for hydroelectricgrouting applications including non-coring TSD bits.

The field proven, LTK48 Thin Kerf Conventional Coring System offersa cost effective, high production alternative to conventional wider kerfcore barrels. The Thin Kerf core barrel was designed for optimumproduction and core recovery in medium to extra hard formations.Small, lightweight circulation pumps can provide the low drilling fluidflow rates required. The use of water or polymer based drilling fluids isdesirable (clay based drilling muds are not recommended due to thesmall annulus between the inner and outer tubes). The low bit weightnecessary to run thin wall impregnated bits reduces wear and tear onthe drill and rods, and improves core recovery in highly fracturedground.

By minimizing on bit kerf, Boart Longyear has effectively increasedcore size in an "A" size hole to the point where nearly "B" size core isretrieved. This makes the LTK48 core barrel system the logical choicefor conventional drilling programs.

LTK48 core barrels may be extended from 1.5 m (5 ft) to 3.0 m (10 ft)or 4.5 m (15 ft), or 3 m (10 ft) to 6 m (20 ft) lenghts in consolidatedground conditions. LTK48 inner and outer tubes consist of box andpin thread connections, which eliminates the need for inner tubecouplings.

Boart Longyear has developed an innovative and practical approachto selecting the best core barrel for your drilling application. Thisapproach incorporates a standard core barrel consisting of the headassembly, inner tube components, outer tube components, the In-The-Hole Tools Product Manual and Safety Poster. To order thestandard configuration core barrel, select a 1.5 m/5 ft or 3.0 m/10 ftcore barrel part number from the standard core barrel page.

There are also options available for standard product which areindicated by a “ ”. A listing of the options available appears on theinner tube options section. If you would like to substitute the standardproduct for these options, select a 1.5 m/5 ft or 3.0 m/10 ft core barrelpart number from the standard core barrel page and specify alloptional parts and part numbers from this section.

Packaging Information

Core barrel parts are packaged exclusively to provide the customerwith the ability to assemble the core barrel with the ideal configurationto the drilling application.

The head assembly is shipped assembled. If options are ordered forthe inner tube , they will replace the standard component.

Inner Tube Components1) Apply rod grease (p/n 62796) to the inside of the core lifter case

and to the outside of the core lifter.2) Insert the core lifter into the core lifter case from the threaded end.3) Apply Z-50 thread compound (p/n 306486) to the threaded ends of

the head assembly, core lifter case and inner tube.4) Thread the head assembly to one end of the inner tube and the

core lifter case to the other. Use an inner tube wrench to ensurethe joints are snug.

Outer Tube Components1) If the core barrel is intended for storage, thread the head

assembly, complete with the inner tube, to the outer tube andattach the thread protector. If the core barrel is intended forimmediate use, install a reaming shell and bit instead of the threadprotector.

2) Tighten all joints with an outer tube wrench to ensure they aresnug.
