Hello Division Eighteen,

This is LeeAnn Owens, your Lieutenant Governor. I hope that you’ve all had a good first few weeks back at school! You’ve all been having your first meetings of the new school year and hopefully recruiting new members! Remember that all April-August Monthly Report Forms are due no later than Tuesday, September 30th. I’m also planning club visits! If you have not already reached out to me, I’ll be in touch to plan a visit at a meeting. My Kiwanis Committee Representative, Mrs. Vail, can be reached at (518)783-6326 or [email protected]. She is a great resource for your advisors, as are your sponsoring Kiwanis Club Presidents. As always, please contact me if there’s ever anything that I can help you with or questions that I can answer!

III.Division Groups

APP: The Key Club app is available of the app store and Google Play. It is a great resource! There are new, interesting articles posted on it every week! There is also a tool to track your service projects! Facebook: Facebook is the most effective way to share ideas with other Key Clubbers! Key Clubbers who hold the same position as you are just a click away! We often forget that many of us face similar obstacles. You are one of each other’s greatest resources! Join the Division 18, NYDKC and KCI Facebook groups! There are also groups for individual offices! HOKC: Humans of Key Club is a social media campaign launched in 2014 to highlight the contributions and dedication of individuals in Key Club. They are on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram. Check them out! You or someone from your club could be featured on HOKC if you send me an idea for an article! State of the District: State of the District emails are Governor Jacob’s way to reach the District as a whole. You can subscribe to them right on the NYDKC site! The next one will be sent out in October!

IV.Service Spotlights

The Maple Hill Key Club is continuing to restore a mural in their town. The materials were donated by a local business earlier this year. They began work on it in the Spring. Right now, Key Clubbers are volunteering after school to draw out the image. President Michaela expects them to begin painting in January. This is a lengthy process and takes a lot of dedication! Great job Maple Hill! Next time your club is stumped for a service project idea, take a peek around your community! Your next service project could be in your own back yard!

IV.Service Spotlights

The Tamarac Key Club is making pink friendship bracelets to sell during October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! They started at their first member meeting on September 18th. This is a simple way to fundraise for a cause! Bracelet string is inexpensive and the bracelets themselves can be made in ten or fifteen minutes! More complicated ones take longer and may require more string, but you can also sell them at a higher price. Try doing small service projects like this at your meetings to keep them interesting!

Make-a-Wish Mission Statement- “Make-A-Wish® grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories, on average, every 38 minutes. We believe that a wish experience can be a game-changer. This one belief guides us. It inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve.”

How to Help:

Do a walk! Make-a-Wish has a program, Walk for Wishes that raises money for the organization

Star Sales! Sell make a wish stars in your community and display them somewhere where everyone can see them so they can see the impact that they’ve had!

VI. Major Emphasis

UNICEF UNICEF is a charity that works to provide for children in developing countries so that they may have a safe and healthy environment to learn, live and grow so that one day they may have equal opportunities as children around the world. They do this by providing food, water, medicine, and protection and by working with local governments to accommodate the learning needs of children. UNICEF has partnered with Kiwanis International to reach the goal of reaching $110 million for the Eliminate Project. Your club can get involved by taking part in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! All you have to do is ask for donations when you go Trick-or-Treating. In my home club we’ve been very successful every year because we distribute the boxes to the elementary school. Contact me for help ordering boxes!

VII.Eliminate

This is the last service year before the K-Family goal to raise $110 million for The Eliminate Project is up! This is why you and your club should be focusing a little extra attention on Eliminate this year! There are so many ways to fundraise! A Movie Night is cheap and relatively simple fundraiser to do. If you do it at your school the venue and equipment will be free and you can have refreshments donated that you can sell to earn more money. Find other ideas like this one on the Kiwanis website! ( http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/newresources/Fundraisingandserviceideas.aspx)

Another way to give to the Eliminate Project is to purchase an Elimiadallion or Walter Zeller Fellowship Recognition for a club president, advisor, or otherwise dedicated individual. The money that a clubs puts toward these recognitions saves hundreds of babies! There are other recognitions of varying levels on the Kiwanis website.
