twelve years ago I was given the opportunity to be the steward of our school. It was a high honor and privilege to lead an institution that plays such a pivotal role not only locally but na- tionally and internationally. From science research to managing businesses to teaching the disadvantaged to running hospitals and tending to souls, we alums of Covington Latin School are everywhere. our school has done great things over this past decade plus. Enrollment has grown both quantitatively and qualitatively by 34%. this can be tied directly to the establishment of the admissions office. technology has grown in leaps and bounds as the school points itself in the direction of a one-to-one program with iPads. new course offerings have been added such as Spanish, Geography and aP Chemistry as well as aP Composition at the junior level. a Campus Ministry program was created that oversaw not only all major liturgical functions at the school but reformulated the Christian Service require- ments at the school. a beautiful new campus has been built that renovated our 1941 building and saw construction of a state-of-the-art facility that includes science labs, technology center, cafeteria, meeting hall, theater space and physi- cal education area. operations of the school have been strengthened and fiscal soundness maintained. Stability took root and the provisions of the strategic plan written at the turn of the century have been achieved. all of this happened because terrific people lent their expertise. From a School Board filled with dedicated, loyal and committed individuals to a staff selfless in all things. our outstanding faculty continued on the tradition of academic excellence and has produced many more alums for the ranks. Parents believed in the school and entrusted their children to our program, valuing the goodness, discipline and knowledge imparted here. Students applied themselves and reached for goals that helped stretch them and mold them into leaders. alumni remembered their days here and volunteered their services through their time and treasure to make sure that our school continued to follow its mission. We have done great things. together we have seen much activity, growth and promises achieved. We are a mighty few, believers in a school that touches so many lives. People associated with this school are great people. as I have reminded all those I have come into contact over the years, you are good people. Let no one take that from you. I thank you all for the love and support you have shown me over the years. I have always felt your strength, guidance and wisdom as I led our school. I could not have done it without you. thank you. Kathy Metzger, office managerhow do you say good-bye to some-one who has given the greaterpart of his life to Covington LatinSchool? how can you possiblyportray your gratitude and appreciation toone who has given selflessly, graciously andfaithfully for 31 years?a tough task to be sure, but one whichgave us the opportunity to have some fun, share memories and express our thanksand love. Such was the task as “andyBarczak Day” came to be. on Wednesday,May 2, the CLS family began the day withMass — a Mass in honor of our headmaster, andy Barczak. Campus minister Matt Krebsintroduced the celebration to andy and thecommunity, thanking him for the manytimes he has shared liturgy with them. Many visitors, as well as andy’s familymembers, were present. greg Schaffer ‘72played a special arrangement for the introand recessional. nell Schaffer ‘03 with Eberthaegele played the piano and directed thechoir with specially chosen pieces. andythanked everyone for being there.Unbeknownst to andy, the activity of theday was yet to come. as students returnedto school, aPt members directed them totheir designated areas and gave them a t-shirt and a paper goatee on a Popsicle stick.Students formed parallel lines, thus creat-ing a walkway where andy came through tocheers, applause and hand shaking. thewalk led andy down the steps in theCommons area, into the Forum and ontothe stage. as everyone was seated, andywas able to view the bright yellow teeshirts with a picture of him on the front, arms crossed across his chest and thewords, “You’ll always be our homeboy.” onthe back of the shirts was a rendering ofour new addition and “our new home.”Mustache/goatees were held in front offaces to reflect the image of andy.

teacher Denny Whitehead ‘62 emceedthe event and introduced a slide show ofandy throughout the years beginning withandy as a student. integrated with the pres-entation were skits performed by StudentCouncil members portraying andy throughhis years at CLS.

andy was then presented with gifts.Matt presented him with an engravedwatch in thanks for the gift of time that hehas generously given to his colleagues. thecafeteria ladies gave him a collage of pic-tures and made him an “honorary LunchPerson.” Bill Banks ’83, our Board presi-dent, presented the dedication of a stainedglass window for the chapel in honor ofmany years of service as teacher, dean andheadmaster. Lisa Logan, aPt president andtoni ash, Corona Studii business partner, then told of the overwhelming response forthe window dedicationthat brought about a sec-ond gift — the BarczakFamily Scholarship Fundwhich matched the dona-tions for the window. Dean of studiesStephanie tewes andguidance/college coun-selor Jamie Rueger thengave andy a stack ofcards and letters that

had been sent in by students, parents, alumni and friends. a booklet of wellwishes and memories was printed from awebsite page dedicated to andy.the choir performed a special arrange-ment by nell Schaffer of “the irish Blessing”and “We are Bound for greater things.”Just when everyonethought our event was end-ing, andy was called onstage, donned with a hairdresser’scape and, just as students dofor their “senior days,” his hair was spray-painted with green CLS letters.andy expressed his gratefulness, appre-ciation and in true andy-style humblyspoke of his time, his many memories andthe need to move on with the comingchanges. his tearful goodbye left many withtears in our own eyes.the aPt hosted a reception for the re-mainder of the day. Many people came towish him well — classmates, students, par-ents, alumni, School Board members andcommunity members. andy’s family waswith him throughout the day.how do you say good-bye to a familymember? You thank god your paths havecrossed. You hang on to the good memoriesand remember the works and words hetaught. You cherish the times you had andpromise to stay in touch. You ask god toguide him, protect him and, perhaps in duetime, lead him home again where welcomearms will always await. You say good-bye,adios, vale, auf wiedersehen, yassas, pozegnanie… godspeed, andy!
