Book documenting warcrimes committed by UStroops in Iraq publishedLOS ANGELES, 20 Aug—A book has been published
recently by Iraq Veterans against the War, whichdocuments war crimes committed by US troops in Iraqand Afghanistan.
The book, entitled Winter Soldier Iraq andAfghanistan: Eyewitness Accounts of theOccupations, was compiled by Iraq Veterans Againstthe War and freelance journalist Aaron Glantz whohas covered the Iraq war from the front lines. TheEnglish editionwas published in the Spring and theJapanese edition was published this month. Botheditions are selling well.
The book shows that well-publicized incidents ofAmerican brutality like the Abu Ghraib prison scandaland the massacre of an entire family of Iraqis in thetown of Haditha are not the isolated incidentsperpetrated by “a few bad apples,” as many politiciansand military leaders have claimed. They are part of apattern, the group says, of “an increasingly bloodyoccupation.”—Xinhua

US researchers develop newway to boost biofuel production
WASHINGTON, 20 Aug—Researchers at Ohio StateUniversity have developed a new way to double theproduction of biofuel butanol, which might somedayreplace gasoline in automobiles, the university saidon Wednesday. The process improves on theconventional method for brewing butanol in abacterial fermentation tank, the university said in apress release.
Normally, bacteria could only produce around 15grams of the chemical for every liter of water in thetank before it would become too toxic for the bacteriato survive, said Shang-Tian Yang, professor ofchemical and bio molecular engineering at Ohio State.Yang and his colleagues developed a mutant strain ofthe bacterium Clostridium beijerinckii in a bioreactorcontaining bundles of polyester fibers. In thatenvironment, the mutant bacteria produced up to 30grams of butanol per liter.
Right now, butanol is mainly used as a solvent, orin industrial processes that make other chemicals. Butexperts believe that this form of alcohol holds potentialas a bio fuel. Once developed as a fuel, butanol couldpotentially be used in conventional automobiles inplace of gasoline, while producing more energy thananother alternative fuel, ethanol. Yang said that thisuse of his patented fibrous-bed bioreactor wouldultimately save money.—Xinhua

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Friday, 21 August, 2009
Every country has their internal issues, many
or few, to be addressed politically. Maybe a devel-
oped country with strong economy has only few
such internal issues, but there is no country that
does not have such issues. A developing country
with racial issues and border incidents has a large
number of internal issues to address. It is usual for
a country to do so, and this concept remains true.
In this regard, every country has to cope with
their domestic issues according to the objective situ-
ations. So, different nations have different ways to
work out their internal issues, and they cannot ig-
nore their problems. They try to serve the interest
of their people with own ways, figuring out their
local issues. Myanmar is one of such countries.
Myanmar has risen from a variety of adversities it
faced in last 20 years, restored stability and peace
and ensured development to the present degree.
Now, the country is putting huge efforts into the
democratic process, as aspired by the people.
Today is Global Age, so any countries, largeor small, cannot stand alone. Every country hasto deal with the countries with which they sharetheir borders, regional countries, international or-ganizations and other countries. That is to say, international relations is of great importance. Here, the ways world countries deal with eachother are different from one another, and thevolumes of friendship and contacts between onecountry and another are various. I mean all coun-tries ought to honour mutual respect for equalityand international rules and regulations promul-gated for international relations, but they shouldnot disregard social affairs and due considera-tion.
Other countries give advice on means and ways
to address the issue being faced by a country, which
is very welcoming. And the country should take
the advice. Here, the advice must be based on
positive attitude. Instead if the advice is associated
with orders, pressures, coercion and punishments,
it is not true international relations.
Today, certain powerful countries are doing the
same, in viewing the issues Myanmar is facing.
Some countries show their goodwill and stand on
the right side, whereas some are putting blame on
and denouncing Myanmar, voicing objections and
imposing economic sanctions against the country
with the intention of making things go as they wish.
Myanmar has to welcome any forms of positive
advice given with goodwill, respecting the law of
the country. I do not think it is wise if several
countries cooperating as a coalition punish and
impose economic sanctions against a particular
country in their interest. That is a means of op-
pressing a targeted country with force. And it is an
unjust way and one-sided relations without equal-
ity.
Have positive attitude to thingsKo Toe
During and after the trial against Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi and Mr Yettaw, our country came under
pressure put and attacks launched by elements inside
and outside the country, which is common knowl-
edge.
They claimed that the accused were charged, put
on trial and punished according to the expired con-
stitution, so the government took unjust action. In
reality, the laws remain in force so long as the ruling
government revokes and dissolves them and their
provisions are not contrary to the present constitu-
tion. I do not want to make further clarification to
that. Prison terms were sentenced to the accused as
the legal proceedings are in conformity with the law
and they were found guilty.
It is very welcoming that the Head of State com-
muted the terms with consideration. I would say it is
positive attitude showed looking forward to positive
results. All the four accused were somewhat privi-
leged. The order carries other privileges they can
enjoy if they abide by the restrictions put on them.
Halves of the sentences are commuted, the other
halves are suspended, and they can live in their home.
Moreover, they can enjoy amnesty if they honour
the rules. That is very encouraging for all.
However, certain elements are not complacent
about the highest compliances, but the countries that
understand the objective conditions of our country
and compliances show their optimism about the is-
sue and recognize the conditions. Whether the gov-
ernment can comply with the unfair demands or not
rests on the law. Making demands for unconditional
release of them ignoring that point is a way of op-
posing the law. They should understand that.
Another issue is Mr Yettaw’s case. In fact, he
has to serve his terms in our country. But, at the
request of US Senator Mr Jim Webb, the govern-
ment commuted the sentence to him by half and
deported him to his mother country. In that way,
Myanmar showed her humanitarian attitude, respect
to international relations and forbearance. So, that
should be recognized as a respect showed to human
rights without animosity but with genuine goodwill.
The release of Mr Yettaw reflects the government’s
understanding and forgive and forget attitude based
on personal affairs. And it also can be said that the
government did what should be done within the
framework of the law.
Although our country is acting in accord-ance with the law with constructive attitude, theWest Bloc and certain countries are voicing thatthey will impose more economic sanctions andtighten economic sanctions. A country disclosedthat it would launch one more Myanmar pro-gramme to help Myanmar people get involvedin democracy movements, apart from presenteconomic sanctions. I notice that they are im-posing some more economic sanctions againstMyanmar. Actually, that is not a positive ap-proach to the Myanmar issue. All what they planto do in that regard will harm no one except thecountry and the people. What is important is totake the public interest into consideration. Sup-pose they are really generous to our country, why are they trying to harm the public interestand development momentum of the nation? Onlywith necessary aid and relations with positiveattitude, will it be possible for them to contrib-ute to national development.
Anyhow, Myanmar will keep on working stead-
fastly according to the steps adopted to achieve the
goal of democracy. The follow-up plans will also
be implemented according to the law and proce-
dures. Every citizen who is eligible according to
the law and bye-laws will be able to participate in
the proceedings. The nation will go on the founda-
tions laid in accordance with the constitution.
Myanmar will consider and accept all the posi-
tive participations in pursuance of the national goal.
However, we will have to ward off any forms of
disruptions to national interest. Today, Myanmar is
trying its best for its all-round development, so those
with negative attitude should wake up and smell
the coffee, withdrawing their grudge towards the
nation.

LONDON, 20 Aug—Adoctor in Canada warns theuse of codeine to treat painfollowing a tonsillectomycould prove fatal for somechildren. Dr GideonKoren of the Universityof Western Ontario in-vestigated the death of a 2-year-old boy following atonsillectomy. Koren saidenlarged tonsils are usuallytreated with antibiotics, but tonsillectomies areperformed in the case ofsleep apnea, in which thechild stops breathing whileasleep.
The toddler, who had ahistory of snoring andsleep-study-confirmedsleep apnea, had theoperation at an outpatientclinic and was takenhome. The mother wasgiven syrup of codeineand instructed how toadminister it to her childfor pain relief — and onthe second night aftersurgery, the childdeveloped a fever andwheezing, and was founddead the next morning.“The child was found tohave the ultra-rapid
metabolism genotypewhich causes the bodyto metabolize codeine ata faster rate, producingsignificantly higheramounts of morphine,”Koren said in a statement.
If the apnea doesn’t goaway, codeine will alsosuppress the child’sbreathing, Koren said.”This demonstrates theneed to keep childrenin hospital under surve-illance for at least 24hours to see if the apneapersists,” Koren said.

Gene variations relatedto brain changes
SAN DIEGO, 20 Aug — US and Norwegian scientistssay they’ve shown gene changes are linked with brainstructure changes in healthy people, as well as thosewith brain disorders.
A research team from Ullelval University Hospitaland the University of Oslo, both in Norway; theUniversity of California-San Diego; and the ScrippsTranslational Science Institute in La Jolla, Calif.,examined 944 healthy people, as well as patientswith Alzheimer’s disease and those with psychoticdisorders. A genetic analysis and a structural magneticresonance imaging study were completed for eachperson.
Researchers focused on the MECP2 gene that isassociated with brain development, as well as regionssurrounding the gene.”Common variations in theMECP2 region result in changes to brain structure, even in healthy individuals,” said UC-San DiegoProfessor Anders Dale, a study co-author who said theresearch is the first to show such structural brainchanges are seen in both healthy and brain-disorderedindividuals.
Nicholas Schork of the Scripps Institute, anotherco-author, said the variation in the MECP2 generesulted in “reduced surface area in the brain’s cortex, the area that plays a key role in memory, attention, perceptual awareness, thought and language.”
The study appears in the online edition of theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

PASADENA, 20 Aug —Data from NASA’sGalaxy EvolutionExplorer spacecraft mayforce astronomers todiscard the assumption thatstars of certain sizes formin certain quantities. Fordecades, astronomers havebelieved the proportion of
small to big stars was fixed. For every star 20 or moretimes as massive as thesun, for example, thereshould be 500 stars withthe sun’s mass or less.
But that belief, based onyears of research, has beenshattered with data fromthe spacecraft’s ultraviolet

WASHINGTON, 20 Aug — What doctorsrecommend to prevent sudden infantdeath syndrome is not always depictedin women’s magazines, US researchersfound. SIDS researchers Dr RachelMoon, a pediatrician, and Brandi Joynerat Children’s National Medical Centerin Washington analyzed pictures ofsleeping infants in 24 magazines withwide circulation among 20- to 40-year-old women.
The researchers evaluated pictures— including articles and advertisements— for sleep positions, including whetheror not a baby was placed on its side orstomach rather than on its back, as wellas hazards in infant sleepingenvironments, including soft bedding.
The study, scheduled to be publishedin the September issue of Pediatrics, found more than one-third of photos inwomen’s magazines depicted babies inunsafe sleep positions and two-thirds ofsleep environments depicted in thesemagazines were unsafe.
“The most important thing for momsto realize is that what they see inmagazines may not be what’s best fortheir baby in real life,” Moon said in astatement. To reduce the risk of SIDS,the American Academy of Pediatricsrecommends babies be placed on theirbacks when sleeping, on a separate sleepsurface from their parents, withoutblankets pillows, or other soft bedding.

Medvedev calls for tougher“terrorism” trials
Moscow, 20 Aug—Insurgents arrested in theturbulent North Caucasus region should be triedelsewhere in Russia, President Dmitry Medvedev saidon Wednesday, part of a series of moves to tackle agrowing wave of attacks.
In a tough speech to security officials following abomb attack on a police station in Ingushetia in which25 people were killed, Medvedev said insurgentsshould be wiped out “without emotion or doubt”. Healso proposed curbing the types of cases that can beheard by juries, a move activists said could strike a fatalblow to efforts to reform the country’s weak courtsystem. Intensifying violence in the North Caucasus, where Russia has fought two wars with Chechenseparatists since the early 1990s, is viewed by theKremlin as a security threat that spread through thecountry.
“Some time ago we got the impression the situationin the Caucasus concerning terrorist attacks hadimproved,” Medvedev told the meeting in the southernRussian city of Stavropol, according to an officialtranscript. “Unfortunately, recent events show this isnot so,” he said, referring to Monday’s attack, thedeadliest in the North Caucasus in four years. “We mustcontinue fighting terrorists without sentiment, killingthem without emotion or doubt.”—MNA/Reuters
