Lincolnshire School GamesPilot event launches this month

In June 2010 it was announced that Lincolnshire would host one of 9 national pilot schemes for a school sports competition linked to the Olympic legacy- a huge achievement for Lincolnshire.

Our School Games event is being held on 14th July 2011 at the Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham.

The School Games are designed around supporting schools to provide more opportunities for their pupils to compete in sport through

a vibrant programme of regular intra- and inter-school competitions. These competitions will lead to the best performing school teams featuring at county level Festivals of Sport; the Lincolnshire School Games – Inspired by London 2012.

The Lincolnshire School Games are a celebration of competitive sport for children across Lincolnshire and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) aims for all young people of all ages, abilities and

backgrounds to be involved over the next 3 years. The committee also aims to bring the excitement of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games to life in Lincolnshire providing, new opportunities for Lincolnshire schools.

This year the Lincolnshire School Games are being run by the School Sport Partnerships of Lincolnshire, following their past success in delivering high quality PE and school sport competitions. It is hoped that the School Games will motivate and inspire thousands of children across the county to participate in more competitive sport.

Nationally Sport England is working with DCMS, the Department for Education, the Department of Health, the British Paralympic Association and the Youth Sport Trust (YST) to deliver the School Games.

Sport and Olympics Minister launches National sports project in LincolnshireHugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and the Olympics, visited Lincoln last month to officially launch a new National sports project for the London 2012 Games.

Sportivate is an initiative which encourages semi-sporty teenagers aged 14 – 25 to get involved with sport. The project, which was launched on Tuesday 14th June 2011, will begin in Lincolnshire this month at various sports clubs and leisure centres across the county.

Hugh Robertson MP attended the launch at the University of Lincoln and was delighted with the activities on offer. He said:

“This £32 million Lottery programme launched by Sport England will give hundreds of thousands of teenagers and young adults across the country the opportunity to try out and get coached in the sport of their choice. I’m sure these same young people will also be inspired when the world’s greatest athletes compete here at next summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games and will then want to stay involved in sport for many years to come.”

Lincolnshire Sports Partnership will work with local

providers and sports clubs to help 14 to 25 year olds to continue to play sport long after they have completed the six week course.

Commonwealth Medallist Zoe Smith and Olympic Medallist Bryan Steel also attended the launch to show their support for the project. Zoe Smith, 16, said: “Getting the chance to get out and try a new sport is fantastic. I didn’t take up my sport until I was 12, so it just shows if you’re up for some fun and trying something new, you can find a sport you really want to stick with.”

Do you have or want facilities that need developing?Lincolnshire Active Community Network (LACN) has now signed up over 20 venues across the county to develop sport, physical and cultural activities in its clients facilities.

The range is diverse including small and large village halls, schools and leisure centres, and activities cover a wide range of interest from soccer stars, racket ball, squash, dance and even family roller skating sessions.

LACN has also supported the development of knitting, sewing and craft classes for those wanting cultural activities.

Besides increasing use of the facilities which will make them more sustainable, LACN hopes to encourage more people to get involved in activities in their own villages and in their own facilities.

Sessions are arranged for all age groups and abilities.

If you have a facility that needs developing and want to work in partnership with LACN, or if you are an organisation looking for facilities in which to run meetings, coaching or activities, please contact Facilities Improvement Manager David Carter at LACN on 01522 585 580 or email:http://alturl.com/n2zpk

Children from nine Supplementary Schools in Lincolnshire competed in the second Supplementary School Games last month at Yarborough Leisure Centre.

Over 200 pupils from schools in the county took part in the event and had the chance to play volleyball, basketball, athletics and wheelchair basketball.

The event was organised by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, the Arabic School for All, Active Nation, the Lincolnshire Supplementary Schools Partnership Forum and City of Lincoln Council.

It built on the success of last year’s event and uses sport to bring together a number of children at Supplementary Schools in Lincolnshire.

Ian Brown is the Equality and Diversity Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. He said: “The event was so successful last year that we had already started planning for this year’s event. Over 200 schoolchildren took part throughout the day and we had a number of different sports for them to try.”

All the photos from the day can be found at: www.facebook.com/lincssports.

Over 50s Archery in Spalding

People over 50 are being encouraged to try archery in Spalding in July and August.

Silver Spoon Bowmen are offering two taster sessions to promote archery on Tuesday 19th July and Tuesday 23rd August from 6.30pm – 9.00pm, and anyone over 50 is encouraged to have a go.

Participants will be allocated a coach and taught to shoot the bow. All equipment will be provided.

Hanya Pielichaty is Sports Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. She has been working with Silver Spoon Bowmen to offer the sessions.

“This is a great opportunity for

people in Spalding to get involved with archery; a sport many people have perhaps not had the opportunity to try before. The club is based at The Gleed Girls School, so hopefully reasonably accessible for a lot of people in the town so I hope everyone gets involved and has a go.”

The session will be held at The Gleed Girls Technology College, Neville Avenue, Spalding, and will cost £5.00.

For more information contact Barry Molsom on [email protected], or visit the Silver Spoon Bowmen website: www.silverspoonbowmen.org.uk.
