LREI MISSION STATEMENT

Our goal is to educate students to become independent

thinkers and lifelong learners and to pursue academic

excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for

others and service to the community.

We believe that learning should be active and experiential, with

the school providing abundant opportunities for students to excel.

We accept students with a range of abilities and talents who can

take full advantage of a rich and demanding academic program in

which each student is both challenged and supported.

We seek to create within the school a community built on

understanding and respecting others. Thus, our student body

traditionally reflects the racial and cultural diversity of our city,

and our curriculum is built on interdisciplinary studies to promote

understanding of many cultures. While individual achievement is

encouraged and rewarded, our program underscores the value of

shared goals, friendship and cooperation in mastering difficult tasks.

The progressive ideals that in 1921 gave life and inspiration to the

school — academic excellence and creativity, active learning and

innovative teaching, respect for the individual and responsibility to

the community — continue to guide the school today.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear LREI Community,

As I finish my first year as chair of the Board of Trustees, I

am filled with gratitude for the generosity of our wonderful

community. All of you — parents, alumni, trustees, grandparents,

alumni parents, faculty, staff and friends — made this 90th

anniversary year so special.

LREI’s success is due to the hard work and generosity of a

great many of our community members. Through the gifts of

your time, talent and assets, you have helped us stay true to

our progressive mission while continuing to grow and change.

On behalf of the Board, thanks to everyone in the LREI community who fundraised for our

school this year. Whether you contributed to our Annual Fund, which had one of its most

successful years to date, our Building for Action Campaign, or our wonderful Art Auction,

you made a difference.

Once again, our brilliant faculty and staff have demonstrated their commitment to LREI by

giving back to the school through participation in the Annual Fund. Thank you, faculty and

staff, for these gifts and also for the dedication you bring to your jobs every day. You are an

inspiration to our students; you teach them to love learning, to ask questions, to challenge

themselves and others, and to find ways to make the world, and their school, a better place.

As an independent, nonprofit school, we rely on the commitment of our community, to make

the best possible educational experience for our students. We are truly grateful for the ways

in which you have shown your support, allowing students and families from all backgrounds

to have access to extraordinary instruction, educational trips and enriching opportunities

both in and out of our classrooms.

Once again, on behalf of the Board, thanks to each and every one of you for your many

contributions. I look forward to welcoming you all to the ribbon cutting for our new

Charlton Street Arts Pavilion on Monday, September 24 — yet another example of your

generosity at work.

Warm regards,

Amy Zimmerman

Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORPHILIP KASSEN

Dear LREI Community,

Thank you, one and all, for your generous contributions to LREI’s

2011–2012 Annual Fund. We are grateful for your confidence —

confidence in our progressive program and in the lasting value of

an LREI education. The Annual Fund allows us to be true to our

mission, to continue to honor Elisabeth Irwin’s innovative spirit

and to imagine the future of progressive education.

Your gifts will allow us to say “Yes” to creating real life

experiences for your children. We will be able to say “Yes”

to many, many opportunities to take our students out into

the world, whether for an hour or for a week, or more. We will be able to offer significant

amounts of continuing professional development to our expert faculty, demonstrating to the

children that learning continues throughout a lifetime. The Annual Fund allows us to offer the

adults in our community opportunities to share in the experience their children have through

our Ideas Speakers Series and Adult r(ED), our adult education program. Finally, the Annual

Fund allows us to create a community that mirrors our great city through our financial aid

program, one of the most generous among independent schools in New York City.

Your gifts demonstrate the collective strength that comes from individual generosity. On

behalf of the whole LREI community, we thank you for your contributions.

THE PEOPLE ARE SO NICE

3

j LREI?WHY DO YOU

In February, we put up a bulletin board in the Sixth Avenue Lobby asking our

community to share why they love LREI. Their heartwarming responses are shared

throughout the Annual Report as a tribute to this very special school. Thank you for

showing your LOVE for LREI with you generous gifts of time, talent and resources.

WHY DOES LREI NEED THE ANNUAL FUND?

Independence

Tuition income does not cover the cost of the remarkable educational experience that

LREI offers to all of its students. The Annual Fund is critical to achieving the school’s

progressive mission. LREI budgeted $900,000 in annual fundraising for 2011– 2012,

which allowed the school to:

• Offer teachers extraordinary professional development that enables them to travel,

to grow in their profession and to bring that enrichment to the classroom (Ensuring

teachers continue to be “really awesome” and “truly an inspiration”).

• Remain accessible to a student body that reflects the diversity of background and

experience of our city (So our “happy” community remains full of “energy,” “smiles”

and “friends”).

• Ensure all students are ready for the 21st century world by equipping classrooms

with the latest technology, offering Mandarin beginning in Fifth Grade, and

providing multiple opportunities for international and domestic travel (An education

that is “amazing,” where students “get to keep learning every day!”).

In short, the Annual Fund helps make LREI the school that we LOVE!

Thank you to more than 700 members of the LREI community who supported

all of our fundraising initiatives this year. We wouldn’t be the special school and

community we are without your generosity!

Senior Gifts from Class of 2011 Families

Ronnie Halper and Marc Donner

Cheryl Leak-Fox

SENIOR GIFT

Each year, families of the Senior Class make a donation to a specific project in honor of their children’s time

at LREI. This year’s class contributed to a special fund to help deserving students with the costs associated

with applying to college (test prep courses, college visits and application fees), as well as a trophy case where

students can display the results of their hard work and accomplishments in sports, academic competitions and

community service. This year 72% of senior families participated, raising $36,000.
