  • T4 was introduced in April 2001. T4 represents a leap forward in diagnostic technology for Land Rover vehicles.T4 combines the ease of use and familiarity of previous TestBooks with an up to date specification computer anddiagnostic software. With the addition of the WDS software, the VCM and the ethernet hub, communication withall future Land Rover vehicles is assured.

This training course 'T4 WDS Advanced User' is available as continuation from the T4 WDS Introduction Course. With this training course, your acquired knowledge can be consolidated. You will be able to demonstrate yourability to show other users how to get the best from the T4 WDS and use some 'Special Functions'.

The content of this Advanced User course includes material from the T4 WDS Introduction. It is put here purelyfor reference purposes.

NOTE: The WDS software is subject to continuous development. Therefore, deviations may occur between thetest procedures/scope of testing described in this brochure and the WDS.

The information contained in this Student Guide was correct at the time of printing.

During the course you will be spending time with people from other dealerships that you may not know. YourProgramme Manager will ask you to introduce yourself to the rest of the delegates to enable you and them to getto know each other. You may like to make a note of their names and details for your reference.

Please remember that our training literature has been prepared for TRAINING PURPOSES only. Repairs andadjustments MUST always be carried out according to the instructions and specifications in the workshop literature. Please make full use of the training offered by Technical Training to gain extensive knowledge of both theoryand practice.

If you experience any problems when using T4, and youare unable to resolve them by repeating the procedureor by consulting T4 literature and/or the Help screens, the next stage is:

Fill in a Help Desk Information Sheet

Telephone the Help desk using the information sheetfor reference

The Help desk may request you to fax this sheet to them. Therefore, it is vital that every section of the InformationSheet is filled in accurately before it is transmitted. Ifjust one small detail is missed out or changed slightly,it could make the difference between getting a solutionto your problem in minutes - or days.

T4 has the capability to print a Help Desk informationsheet with certain sections automatically completed.Pressing the Help Desk button on the Welcome Screen

    (G542646) Technical Training14

    Dealer Name

    Corporate ID

    Telephone Number

    Fax Number

    Contact 1

    T4 Serial/Model Number

If an RDS error occurs, the Fault Notification box hasa Help Desk button on it. Pressing this completes thesix sections mentioned previously and the followingsections as well:

    Data CD Reference Number

    RDS Release Number

    Screen Reference/Node ID

The following sections MUST also be completed.

    Vehicle Details And Reported Fault

This should include the exact vehicle model, derivative, model year and VIN, plus any component numbers orcodes relevant to the area of the vehicle being workedon. When combined with details of the reported faultthat you are trying to diagnose, this may give T4engineers a short cut to a solution based on previousexperience.

Full Details Of Test Being Used

This information is vital to a T4 engineer who is tryingto reproduce and solve the problem.

Some diagnostics can be reached via several differentpaths. It is vital that the T4 engineers follow exactly thesame diagnostic trail as you. It would help if you madea note of each screen where you made a decision, so theengineer can follow exactly the same path. For example:

    Select Diagnostic System

    Select Security

    Select Locking/Unlocking

Continue the path until you reach the screen with thefault.

Full Details Of Any Difficulties Using T4

It may be useful to T4 engineers to know of anydifficulties that you have experienced when using yourT4.

    Cabling Drawing Reference Used

NOTE: This version of the WDS software is unique toLand Rover and therefore can only be used on LandRover vehicles.

NOTE: The WDS software is loaded onto the laptophard drive and therefore it is not necessary to leave thedisc in the CD ROM drive.

NOTE: When a pop-up window appears in the screendisplay, the system only carries on working when oneof the buttons offered in the window is selected.

NOTE: Any change to these settings after an event hasbeen captured affects the size of succeeding buffers.

NOTE: Signals on the Live Display screen are displayedin real time.

NOTE: If the T4 screen on which your problemoccurred is one of those that can be printed, please printit off and fax it through to the Help Desk with yourInformation Sheet. The more information you can givethe Help Desk, the faster they can help you.

The heart of the T4 diagnostic tester is the laptopcomputer. As stated earlier this is a standard Dell unitwhich provides a much higher level of processing powercoupled with a substantial reduction in capital costs.

The unit itself has a Pentium III processor with 64Mbof Random Access Memory (RAM) and an 8Mb videomemory. Later units have a Pentium 4 processor with256 Mb of RAM. The operating system is Windows XPPro. The unit is attached, along with the necessaryvehicle connection points, to a trolley.

    T4 Power Supplies

T4 is normally supplied with power from a mains powersupply. The T4 trolley has its own built in transformerto convert mains power to the required voltage.

Whilst it is being powered from the mains supply, agreen indicator light emitting diode (LED) is illuminatedon the front panel of the laptop computer and on thefront of the T4 Hand Held Tester diagnostic port.

The T4 unit can also be powered from an internallithium battery which is located in a module bay at thefront left hand side of the laptop computer. In thisinstance an amber LED is illuminated on the front panelof the lap-top computer and on the hand held tester

Although software problems are rare, it could be thatyour current version of software is damaged or corruptin someway. If you have a previous version of thesoftware, under normal circumstances its installationwould not be possible. The reason for this is the waythe operating system functions.

When you update your software normally, the systemchecks the version number of the software you areinstalling. If the system sees an earlier version than theone that is current on your machine, the installation isaborted.

What follows is a method experienced T4 WDS userscan apply in order to first remove the current version ofthe software on the machine and then install an olderversion of software.

Use this method only in exceptional circumstances, where you cannot wait until a later version of the currentsoftware is available or a replacement for your damageddisc is available.
