J8N 2-APR-73 11: 5 1 Comments on Prescot and Possible ARC Catalog Procedures

Some obvious implications o~ accepting the above are tllat:

1 . We need to begin to dis~ineulsh among the types of files, entering into each only tbe items proper for the fIle , and on ly the information about any It em which is proper tor the .lile .

2. We need to begin to distinguish the materials to be noted in the ~lies , enterinR each only in the proper 11les and ente r in~ the information about each which is proper ~or the , I La.

3. We need to set up p r ocedures by which the sta~us of an item may be chanMed. E. a ., the release of a personal letter fo r abBtractln~ in a public file , or the reproduction for public dIstribution of a proprietary item.

4 . We need to act on a concept alreadY In ARC catato& des i gn , the theory 01 sete. We need provi sion "for a tuLl entry of information Includln@ an abstract 01 an Item to be entered io+o one f jle while only a notation entry is sent to another. ThIs would allow abstrac t s 01 pe r sonal letters to go into a perRonel £i l e wh il e only a log-type cn talog entry would go 1n to the pub li c tiles ..

JEW 2-AP~73 10:03 8abysl1tlng the Network Monitor Code

The Network code In TENEX 1.29 (at least as confi g ured tor our syatem) has been flaky ~or quite Bome time.

1'111 aware that several t.ilnes a day (I wou1.d guess ' t.he Network 'han gs ' for SOnle undeternalned reason, anet either the Net-related system Jobs (HETSBR, FTPSRV, etc.) have to be

15444

resturted or the monitor code re-inj tlallzed (·recycled'). 1a

Periodically durin" the day, 1 at tempt to log into ou.r s y s tem throus h the Net to verity the Network code , and fIx things i~ my attempt Js unsucce88~ul. lai

Within the last coup l e 01 weeks , we've also see~ upon occasion a distInctly d i£~erent, Net-related problenl which BPems to Involve in put ~ro~ a few Net pseudo-tty line s ge tting clobbered, causin8 users to ge t bells in response to theIr in pu t.

The hope, at l.east on Rly part, ha.s been that th e quirks that we've observed In the Net are characteristIc 01 1.29 , and that the Net will perform more reliably under 1.31 (In which the Network-reLated, monitor code has undergo ne a major rewrite'. The intent was to avoid t.he investment of substantiaL amounts of time (Rline) tracking down bugs In code ~hat wa.s soon to be (and haa now, with 1. 3 1) heen 'thrown away.

lhe N'ptwor.k code in our system should run as reliably as any other piece o~ the monitor, and shouLdn't (though certainly has in th~ past) require baby-sitting.

Ny feelJng about Dirk's me~o (see -- 15404,) is that we should observe the performance of the Network under 1. 3 1 lor a week or two. If it doesn't fly, we should Jnvest my tIme and/or approach SBN ahou't trackIn@ down the bugs .

re.Jected several data management systems, including INQUIRE and SYSTEM 2000. Vallee asked if they were famIliar with GYPSY, which is used in mineral data base application s, or 0$ RANtS , which Standard Oil has used extensively . They had not heard of these systems. Mike Kudl Lc k men~ioned RETRIEVE, which they had not tested either .

Jacques Vallee asked what would ~ypica t uses o~ the do~a-base be. D ick Sc hmi d t ans.ered that the DOD wanted to be able to f ind out infor_ation like "What DOD unit is workin g on totat utility sys t ems?n Tbey a1.so want to keep an inventory 0-( c 'urrent projectSt they need sornethi ng that's I) manallement tool. The needs as descrIbed cail ~or a flexible, restructurable data- hase with Interactive query capability , processing (in the sense 0'" updates, sorting , hardcopy) and analysis.

MIke Kudl i ck remarked that this seemed to imply access to mathema'tical processing t-oo. The a nswer was that no modelin~ will be required , but some analYSis capabilities are needed.

Jacques Val l ee poi nt ed out that update (rather than ~ite c r eation and Interrogation) was the key phase in retrieval systems . What would be the ~orm o~ the updating operations? Lynn S p r ag~s continued the discussion by pointing out that all the element s of the sys tem are idel\tI~ied now, but NLS could probably enhance some of t hei r capabilities, especially 1n editing a nd in input/output. 7 c

Dick Watson brought 1he meeting back to the p r oblem o~ supporting such ener ilY tiles undc_r NLS , and Nl ke Kudlick asked what would be the limitatIons In terlns of file sj z e . 7 d

Dick Watson saId that we were currently invest i ga ting the possibility ot using NLS-asslsted Lite ~anjputatlon, makIng use oL a network inter1ace. Data were edited and cleaned up in NLS , then sent out to another site for processing. 7d3

Lynn Spr&R£S described the system they were aiming at as a randomly-structured one altowloM search on portions of data. Inverted lists would be maintained, sortlna would be avaiLabLe and muttl-Ievel searches would be allowed. 1d4

Addi~ionoL capablli~ies would include opera~inQ on retrieved data, e.a. co~pare it to other data, correLate J~ with bibLioaraphies, create index entries, e~c.

ULtimately they want to be able to search ge neral bibLiographIes and to move to the data section Lrom article ~bstracts.

Jacques Vallee saId that there was a ~hird way in which NLS couLd be profitabLy applied ~o ~he problem (the first two alternatIves are 1) new syste~ entirely in NLS - reJec~ed

beCAuse o~ t,te size And speed, and 2) NLS-assisted work on the Net'

The third aLternative would be to use NLS for what i~

does best, nameLy the support 01 dialogue amon~ the distributed communIty bUiLdinK up the da~a-ba8e: Linkina the people enaa~ed in data-~athcrlna and system detinition.
