ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DAY

The focus for the December Program Day was Economic Development and program hosts were the Washington Suburban Sani-tary Commission (WSSC) and Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation (PGCEDC). Following breakfast at WSSC, members of Class XXVIII were welcomed by WSSC General Manager and CEO, Jerry N. Johnson, who manages a

budget in excess of $2 billion dollars.

The morning panel discussion on the “Role of Infrastructure in Facilitating Economic Development” included panelists from Balti-more Gas and Electric (BGE), Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), Verizon, and WSSC. Each panelist shared insights into some of their more prominent infrastruc-ture and capital investments and the poten-tial economic impact (millions of dollars) for Prince George’s County employees, resi-dents, contractors, and businesses. They also shared insights into challenges and opportunities posed by aging infrastructure, technological improvements, political and regulatory influences, reliability and profita-bility pressures, as well as philanthropic and

community engagement efforts.

The morning panel was followed by a case study that was designed to help program participants evaluate the sustainability and transformative value of a “fictional” economic development project. The morning ended with a wonderful lunch, which was generous-

ly provided by the WSSC.

The afternoon session at the PGCEDC offic-es in Largo, MD, included panelists from the PGCEDC, Gaylord National Harbor, Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce, City of Bowie, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and the Office of Council Member Karen Toles (D-District 7).

The discussion focused on “Sustainable Economic Development and Economic Transformation”. Lively discussion ensued on a variety of topics including: transit-oriented development, the County’s Priority Investment Plan and its evaluation criteria, tourism in the County, land use and growth management, political ramifications of devel-opment plans, community engagement in development project planning, high-density residential and commercial investments, tax revenue sources, and public relations (branding/marketing/media) influences and impacts on County development and busi-ness recruitment efforts.

Grandfather, Look at our brokenness, We know that in all creation Only the human family Has strayed from the sacred way. We know that we are the one Who divided And we are the ones Who must come back together To walk in the sacred way. Grandfather, Sacred one, Teach us love, compassion, honor That we may heal the earth And heal each other. I came upon this Chippewa Prayer reading an article by Frances Hesselbein (Leader to Leader, summer 2012) in which she re-counts the fact that a child in our country drops out of school every nine seconds,

70% of poverty-level children have no high school diploma, and 30% of all American children have no high school diploma. Contin-uing, she cites the incivility of our leaders and the struggles of returning veterans. We can all add easily a plethora of additional ills be-setting our communities. While she goes on to call attention to those who by their actions shine a bright light in the “...perceived darkness of our times,” my thoughts raced immediately, driven partially by this, to the founding purpose of Leader-ship Prince George’s: the development of community trustees. Bringing together individual men and women from all groups represented in the Prince George’s community, to identify and hold in trust some aspect of the community in which they live, work or have significant interest. Trustees, men and women so holding that

“Practical Cybersecurity for Organiza-tions" was presented by Casey O’Brien, Director of the National CyberWatch Center at Prince Georges Community College (PGCC), on November 19, 2013 at PGCC. This thought provoking presentation was well attended and provided insights about how attendees and their organizations could take steps to safeguard the security of their organ-ization's network system and data. A light lunch was provided to attendees.

trust that by their stewardship, it is better than they found it. We need now more than ever before, men and women leading institutions who under-stand that these institutions must act as trus-tees as well. Understand that corporations in particular have an obligation that goes far beyond stockholder wealth. They have a duty to add value in and opportunity for a shared community. The Chippewa prayer above called for love, compassion and honor as prerequisite quali-ties in their quest to heal the land and them-selves; we need no less. For it is with love that we care for one another, it is with com-passion that we build an equitable and just society, it is with honor that we build trust, without which no society endures. You inherit a great trust; leadership. Honor it well!

LPG CIVIC ENGAGEMENT 2014:

Educating and Engaging Our Communities

According to Thomas Ehrlich, “Civic Engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means pro-moting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes…” 1

“…A morally and civically responsible individual recognizes himself or herself as a member of a larger social fabric and therefore considers social problems to be at least partly his or her own; such an individual is willing to see the moral and civic dimensions of issues, to make and justify informed moral and civic judgments, and to take action when appropriate.” 1

2014 LPG EVENTS Please join LPG as we embark upon exciting Civic Engagement programs for 2014, which include our LPG Emerging Leaders Program highlighted above.

As this year is an election year, the Spring candidate’s forum is sure to be an exhilarating event for both youth and adults who attend. Details to follow soon!

LPG EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM By Tara Eggleston, Chair

January 25th marked the launch of Leadership Prince George's first annual Emerging Leadership Program (ELP)! This new initiative will target middle school, high school, and college students from Prince George's County. The mission of LPG's Emerging Leaders Program is to develop the leadership capacity of young people in Prince George's County through knowledge-building, civic engagement, and action-based opportunities to promote positive change within the communities in which they live. Each year, the ELP will de-velop and promote a new "focus area" with the hopes of keeping our young leaders engaged, informed and involved in the latest community issues and action. With the upcoming election season nearing, LPG thought this would be a prime opportunity to engage our area's young leaders in civic engagement opportuni-ties for the 2014 program. The ELP will offer four main components including a civic engagement brochure and workshop day, an advocacy day in Annapolis, and will conclude with a candidate's forum in late Spring. Almost 50 young people participated in the opening civic engagement work-shops on January 25th. The workshops were held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex from noon to 4:30pm. Stay tuned to the LPG website for more information and updates on the Emerg-ing Leaders Program and schedule of events. If you are interested in working on the ELP committee, contributing as a workshop presenter or sponsor, or know of a young leader that would be great for our inaugural class, please contact [email protected].
