Lozier was born in Ray County, Missouri, on January 28, 1866. In 1892, he married Iowa Carruthers. They had two sons, Ralph Jr. and Lue. Lozier practiced law in Carrollton, Missouri, until 1922 when he was elected to Congress. In 1913 he served as president of the Missouri Bar Association. Lozier represented the second Congressional District until his defeat in 1934. While in Congress he was chairman of the Committee on Insular Affairs. He was ranking member of the committee on Invalid Pensions and Election of President and Vice- President and members of Congress. In April of 1936, Lozier was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge Harris L. Moore of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. He served in this capacity until November of that year. INTRODUCTION

The papers contain correspondence, pamphlets, speeches, and news clippings

related to Lozier's legal, agricultural, and political careers. Also included are research

notes for and copies of Lozier's two historical novels and campaign papers of Lue C.

Lozier.

DONOR INFORMATION

The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Lue C. Lozier on 30

March 1946 (Accession No. 2849).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Ralph F. Lozier was born in Ray County, Missouri, on January 28, 1866. In 1892,

he married Iowa Carruthers. They had two sons, Ralph Jr. and Lue.

Lozier practiced law in Carrollton, Missouri, until 1922 when he was elected to

Congress. In 1913 he served as president of the Missouri Bar Association.

Lozier represented the second Congressional District until his defeat in 1934.

While in Congress he was chairman of the Committee on Insular Affairs. He was ranking

member of the committee on Invalid Pensions and Election of President and Vice-

President and members of Congress.

In April of 1936, Lozier was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of

Judge Harris L. Moore of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. He served in this capacity until

November of that year.

Lozier opened a law practice in Washington, D.C. He was general counsel to the

oilseed, soap and glycerin industries until 1943, when he returned to Carrollton.

Throughout his life Lozier had interests in agriculture and real estate. He operated an

apple orchard and citrus ranch and raised Duroc hogs. He owned and rented many grain

farms in northeast Missouri. He also wrote two novels on French history. Lozier died on

May 28, 1945.
