The Loyola Marymount Universityathletic department welcomed theBurns Recreation and Aquatics Centerto its family of sports facilities inAugust of 2000.

The Olympic size pool is part of the$20-million Burns Rec Center andserves as the home venue for men's andwomen's water polo as well as LMUswim meets. Showing that it is one ofthe finest facilities in the country, LMUhosted the NCAA Men's Water PoloChampionship on December 7-8, 2002.Both days of the event were sold outwith a crowd of more than 2,600 for thechampionship.

One of the premier aquatics facili-ties in Southern California, the Burnsrecreation center pool is heated and fea-tures an advanced deck-level drainagesystem. There are separate lockerrooms for home and visiting teams aswell as office space and meeting rooms for the LMU aquat-ics' coaching staff. Adjacent to the pool is permanentbleacher seating with a normal capacity for 800 fans.

Added to the facility in the fall of 2001 was a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The scoreboard from Colorado TimingSystems features scoring systems for both water polo andswimming, including the touch-pad timing for eight swimlanes. The fully digit system includes matrix and video capabilities and was installedthanks to the donations of Albert Gersten. In addition, a new audio system wasinstalled prior to the start of the 2002 water polo season.

In three years at the facility, the two water polo programs have posted impressiverecords. The men’s program has compiled a 29-10 record in Burns the past two seasons,a winning percentage of .744. In six seasons at the helm ofthe men’s water polo pro-gram at Loyola Marymount

University, Head Coach JohnLoughran has built the Lions’into a national power, holding atop-10 ranking the last three sea-sons. LMU enters the 2003 seasononce again in the top-10 andlooking for its second WesternWater Polo Association champi-onship in the last three years. However, this season the Lionswill have to do it with a differentlook than has been seen the lastseveral seasons.

Loughran, who has posted aschool-best 96 wins, will be in a transitional seasonas he will have to work without seven players whoplayed more than 80 percent of the season in 2002and were a large part of the Lions title in 2001.

For the first time in five seasons the programwill be without the Witts. Kevin Witt, one of just twothree-time All-Americans at LMU and the 2002WWPA Player of the Year, finished his four-yearcareer last season as the second leading scorer inprogram history with 210 total points. His brotherKyle Witt, finished fifth on that list in 2001 with 152total points. In addition, All-American goalie KevinPaulsen, the WWPA Player of the Year in 2001, alsofinished a solid career in anchoring the Lions’ topdefense.

“This team will have a completely differentpersonality,” said Loughran. “We will look toattack more offensively and we have a much quick-er team than in the past. The mix of returningplayers and new talent brings tothe pool a great chemistry and agreat work ethic. Those combi-nations will allow us to be suc-cessful.”

With the transition, the Lionswill look to take home anotherWWPA championship with a tal-ented core of players who arereturning for the 2003 season.

“Our goal is to achieve thehighest ranking in program his-tory, defeat some of the nation’sbest and win the WWPA title,”said Loughran. “For us to win thechampionship, our players willhave to fill the roles we need

them to. We need our return-ing players to take advantageof the opportunity to play. Wewill also need our newcomersto be ready to play extendedminutes.”

The Witts might havebeen two of the program’s topscorers, but the Lions willstill return its top two scorersfrom the 2002 season. SeniorRyan Chapatte (UTL, 6-5,Sr, Soquel, CA) had his bestseason as a Lion with a team-best 49 goals in 2002. He wasa first-team All-WWPA selec-tion and also led the Lions

with 39 steals and was fourth with 12 assists. Alsoback will be sophomore Endre Rex-Kiss (2MM,6-3, So., Budapest, Hungary). In his first season ofcollegiate water polo, he finished with 45 goals, 27steals (second on the team) and a team-best 20assists.

All told the Lions will return seven of its top-10scorers from last season when the Lions finished17-15 overall while earning impressive wins oversixth-ranked Pepperdine, sixth-ranked Pacific,ninth-ranked Long Beach State and 10th-rankedUC Santa Barbara.

Senior Tamas Szego (DR, 6-2, Sr., Budapest,Hungary) will be one of the leaders in the pool forLMU. He finished with 22 goals last season andplayed in all 32 games. Also playing in every gamewas Rex-Kiss, Chapatte, junior Trevor Wagner(DR, 5-11, Jr., Lafayette, CA), and senior ScottSmith (DR, 5-10, Sr., Davis, CA). Each one of the

five were in the top-10 inscoring as Smith was seventhwith 13 goals and Wagnerwas 10th with seven goals.

Playing in just 17 gamesdue to an illness, seniorKris Barr (UTL, 6-1, Sr.,Hollister, CA) will be one ofthe senior leaders forLoughran’s squad in 2003.He finished eighth in goalswith 11. Also seeing limitedaction last season was juniorTyler Swanson (DR, 6-0,Jr., El Segundo, CA). He wasninth on the squad witheight goals and three steals

Lions Look to Get Back On Top

Senior Tamas Szego scored 22 goals in2002 and has 100 in his career.

Senior Scott Smith was one of six play-ers to appear in all 32 games last sea-son, scoring 13 goals.

while playing in just12 games.

The Lions defensewill also be in solidshape despite the lossof long-time starters.Sophomore JustinColeman (G, 6-3,So., San Martin, CA)earned valuable play-ing time as a fresh-man in 2002, earningappearances in 15games to post a goalsagainst average of6.545 in 2002, the best on the team of the season. He added 47 saves on the season.

Also returning for the Lions will be junior PatReilly (DR, 6-2, Jr., Oakland, CA), sophomoreRob Beech (UTL, 6-3, So., Los Alton, CA), soph-omore Nik Oster (DR, 6-2, So., Santa Cruz, CA)and junior Sean Wimer (DR, 5-11, Jr., LongGrove, IL). Reilly took the 2002 season off afterplaying for the Lions in 2001, scoring nine goals in19 games. Beech played in nine games, scoring twogoals; Oster finished with four goals in 14 games;and Wimer had four goals in 12 games.

With a talented group of returning players toset the base both offensively and defensively, theLions will rely on the 10 newcomers to fill in thegaps.

“We will have more depth this season despitethe loss of so many players from last year’s team,”said Loughran. “With so many new players we willbe playing more rotations than before.”

Looking to make use of that playing time willbe freshmen Ian Elliot (G, 6-0, Fr., Tustin, CA),Cutberto Hernandez (DR, 6-2, Fr., San JuanCapistrano, CA), Matt Reynolds (2MD, 6-3, Fr.,Menlo Park, CA) and sophomore transfer Scott

Marshall (2M, 6-4, So.,Morgan Hill, CA).

Elliot will competewith Coleman as the start-ing goalie for the Lions. He brings extensive expe-rience for a freshmanthanks to playing timewith the national youthteam. Also adding supporton the defensive side willbe Reynolds, who hasgreat speed to be a force attwo-meter defense.

Looking to make upsome of the lost offense will be Hernandez andMarshall. Marshall has experience at the juniorcollege level and will see time as both a utility andat two-meter. Hernandez, who also played on thenational youth team, is a lefty who has a knack forscoring and great speed.

Once again the Lions will be tested as they willplay at least 18 games against teams who finishedthe 2002 season ranked in the nation's top 20.They will start the season with a trip to the UC SanDiego Invitational on Sept. 6-7 at Canyonview Poolon the campus of rival UC San Diego. The Triton'sdefeated the Lions in the Western Water PoloAssociation Championship at Canyonview last sea-son. The two programs have battled for the title thelast three seasons with the Lions winning in 2001.

The Lions will then host their first home gameof the season at Burns Recreation and AquaticsCenter on Sept. 12 against UC Davis. The game willstart at 4:00 p.m. Following the match-up againstUC Davis, the Lions will take on UC Irvine, who fin-ished ranked sixth in the nation, on Sept. 17 at 7p.m. in Irvine, Calif.

Other ranked teams on the Lions' schedule for2003 includes third-ranked Pepperdine (Sept. 27 atBurns and Nov. 13 in Malibu), 17th-ranked BYUHawaii (Oct. 9 at Burns), 13th-ranked UC SantaBarbara (Oct. 11 in Santa Barbara), top-rankedStanford (Oct. 12 at Burns), another date with10th-ranked UC San Diego (Oct. 17 at Burns),fifth-ranked USC (Oct. 22 at USC), fourth-rankedUCLA (Nov. 6 at Burns) and 16th-ranked Air Force(Nov. 8 at Burns).

The Lions will also participate in the tradition-ally loaded SoCal and NorCal Tournaments. Bothfeature fields of more than 12 teams all ranked inthe nation's top-20. UC Irvine will host the SoCalTournament on Sept. 20-21 and the NorCalTournament will be at Stanford Oct. 4-5. TheWWPA Tournament will be at Redlands Nov. 21-22.

Supporting the University mission to encourage learningand the education of the whole person, the LearningResource Center (LRC) has made its primary mission thecultivation of knowledge and critical thinking in studentsthrough individual and small group tutoring.

The LRC, open to all students, plays a critical role in pro-viding academic support. Students can enlist the help offull-time specialists in writing, math, reading and studyskills. The LRC also has a peer tutoring staff trained toassist students in many University courses.

Students are encouraged to use the LRC to discuss upcom-ing assignments, to prepare for exams or to review drafts of papers. To utilize these services, stu-dents simply need to set up a free 30-minute or one-hour tutorial appointment.

One of the key student-support services offered by the LRC is the Academic Monitoring Program.Student-athletes who participate meet weekly with an LRC academic specialist for a 15-minuteappointment. Working with the specialist, the student-athlete learns to arrange study time, dis-cusses upcoming assignments and develops a plan for academic success. Once a week, the spe-cialist sends a team report to the coach, the Director of Athletics, the Director of the LearningResource Center and the special academic adviser assigned to the team.

The Academic Monitoring Program offers a num-ber of advantages for student-athletes:• Personal attention from an academic specialistwho guides the student-athlete in examining andforming academic goals.• Time management and learning strategies, aswell as a review of the student-athlete’s weeklyplanner or schedule.• Encouraging the student-athlete to establishand maintain direct, effective communicationwith faculty. Open dialogue is frequently the keyto mastering subject matter.• If tutoring is recommended for a specificcourse, the specialist will ensure the student-ath-lete has a standing weekly appointment for theremainder of the semester. • The specialist may arrange additional weeklymeetings to meet the needs of the student-athleteor may refer the student-athlete to another LRCspecialist if additional expertise is required. The LRC also offers college-based programs:• The College of Science and Engineering in col-laboration with the LRC offers small group work-shops for students enrolled in Chemistry 101.• Other colleges and departments offer smallgroup tutoring and/or workshops for particular-ly difficult courses; students should check withthe Coordinator, Student-Athlete AcademicServices to learn about these opportunities.

What do I need to do in order to play at LMU?If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a freshman, you must reg-ister and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Your highschool counselors should provide you with a student-release form and a redbrochure titled, "NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete." You mustcomplete the student-release form and mail the top (white) copy of the form to theclearinghouse along with the $30 registration fee. Give the yellow and pink copiesof the form to a high-school official who then sends the yellow copy, along with anofficial copy of your high-school transcript that includes your SAT or ACT score(s),to the clearinghouse. Your high school should keep the pink copy for its files. Aftergraduation and before the school closes for the summer, your school also must sendthe clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that confirms graduation fromhigh school. Your counselors can obtain registration materials, at no cost, by call-ing the clearinghouse at 319/337-1492. You can also register on-line at www.ncaa-clearninghouse.net.

How do I know if I'm being recruited? You become a "prospective student-athlete" when you start ninth-grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athlete if a college givesyou (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the collegedoes not provide to prospective students generally. You become a "recruited prospec-tive student-athlete" at a particular college if any coach approaches you (or anymember of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that col-lege. Activities by coaches that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are: (1) providing you with an official visit; (2) placing more than one tele-phone call to you or any other member of your family; or (3) visiting you or anyother member of your family anywhere other than the college campus. Boosters:In addition to general recruiting regulations, no alumni, boosters or representativesof a college's athletics interests can be involved in your recruitment. There can beno phone calls or letters from boosters. If an LMU booster is contacting you, pleasecall the LMU Compliance Office as soon as possible at (310) 338-7789.

When can I talk to the coach?Telephone Calls: In all sports other than basketball, phone calls from staff members(but not boosters) are not permitted until July 1 after completion of your junioryear. In basketball, one telephone call to a prospect may be made on or after June21 following the prospects junior year. After this, a college coach or faculty mem-ber is limited to one telephone call per week to you (or your parents or legalguardians), except that unlimited calls to you (or your parents or legal guardians)may be made under the following circumstances: (1) during the five days imme-diately before your official visit by the college you will be visiting; (2) on the day ofa coach's off-campus contact with you by that coach; (3) on the initial date forsigning the National Letter of Intent in your sport through two days after the initialsigning date; and (4) you (or your parents) may telephone a coach at your expenseas often as you wish. At the completion of your junior year (after July 1), coachesmay also accept collect calls from you, using our toll-free number (1-800-LIONS-R-1).

Off-Campus Contacts: A college coach may contact you in person off the cam-pus only on or after July 1 after the completion of your junior year in high school.A contact is any face-to-face meeting between a college coach or athletics staffmember and you or your parents, during which any of you say more than “hello.”Also, any such face-to-face meeting that is prearranged or that takes place on yourcampus, at an organized competition or practice involving you or your high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team shall be considered a contact, regardless of the conversation. Currently in all sports other than football, collegecoaches may contact you off the college campus no more than three times. However, a college coach may visit your high school (with the approval of your highschool principal) only once a week during a contact period.

Evaluations: An evaluation is any off-campus activity used to assess your academ-ic qualifications or athletics ability, including a visit to your high school (duringwhich no contact occurs) or watching you practice or compete at any site. Currentlyin all sports other than basketball, a college coach is limited to seven opportunities(contacts and evaluations combined) to recruit you and not more than three of theseven opportunities may be contacts. In basketball, coaches have a limit of five oppor-tunities with which to recruit you (contact and evaluations combined) off the collegecampus. Not more than three of those five opportunities may be contacts. Once yousign a National Letter of Intent, you may be evaluated an unlimited number of timesby a college coach from the college with which you have signed.
