Respected Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor, VIT University, Vellore and

Chief Guest of the 5th Annual Day Celebration, Loyola College, Vettavalam, Rev. Fr. H.

Ignatius Amalraj, S.J., Superior, Rev. Fr. G. Arokiaraj, S.J., Secretary, Rev. Fr. Dominic Royce,

the Media, Heads of the Departments, Members of the Staff, Administrative Staff and Dear

Students,

Good morning and a warm welcome to each and every one of you present here.

The years 2013 and 2014 are Jubilee Years for the Jesuits. In 2013, Jesuits of the Madurai

Province celebrated the 175 years of the establishment of the New Madurai Mission by the

French Jesuits in Tamil Nadu (1838-2013) and in 2014, Jesuits all over the world are celebrating

the 200th year of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus ( 1814-2014). The academic year 2013-

2014, is, therefore, the year of the twin Jubilee celebrations for us Jesuits. Rev. Fr. Adolfo

Nicolas S. J., the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has invited us to commemorate the

Restoration event “with humble and sincere gratitude to the Lord, with a desire to learn from our

history, and as an occasion for spiritual and apostolic renewal.” He further states that “the better

we remember our history and the more deeply we understand it, the better we will understand

ourselves and our identity as an apostolic body in the Church.” In Madurai Province, the

inauguration of the twin Jubilee events took place in Madurai on 26 October 2013 and these two

Jubilee events were gloriously concluded with twin celebrations, one in St. Joseph's College

Tiruchirapalli on 1st February 2014 and the second in our own campus, Loyola College,

Vettavalam on 2nd February 2014. I am proud to say that I was the Convenor of the Province

Jubilee Committee. Following the noble tradition of the forefathers of this historic province, the

Jesuit Fathers of Madurai Province and particularly the Chennai Jesuit Mission have chosen this

educationally backward region to start a college to educate and empower the youth. With

Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Doss Lourdes, S.J. First Secretary of the College

(2009-10 to 2012-13)

Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Das, who served as the First Secretary of this college for four years from

2009-10 to 2012-13, toiled day and night right from day one to provide all the basic facilities a

new college in a rural place would be in need of. Being himself simple, generous and

approachable, all the staff and non-teaching staff were able to relate with him freely and in a

friendly manner. Some of the stationary things that he bought two years ago are of great use even

today. This was the foresight with which Fr. Michael Das made things available to one and all.

“A good person can make another person not only good, but better and even the best. It means

that goodness will elicit goodness in the society”. This quote attributes well to the personality of

Fr. Michael Das, SJ. The management places on record the yeomen services he has rendered to

this budding institution right from the start. As a man able to reach out to all, he catered to the

needs of the student community, teaching faculty, administrative staff of the college and the

neighbourhood. The services rendered by him as the Secretary is mind blowing which kept a

spontaneous growth in the past four years. He has moved to Gonzaga College as the Principal.

Our loss is their gain. We salute Fr. Michael Das for all the services he rendered and all the

infrastructure facilities he provided to make the college what it is today.

Rev. Fr. R. Jesu Michael Das, S.J.

Fr. J M Das SJ, succeeded Fr. Dr. Elias, S.J., and served as the Principal of this college for one

fruitful year (2012-13). He was a man of long years of experience in both teaching and

administration. Fr. J. M. Das, S.J, confidently took up the academic leadership of this growing

institution and introduced lot of innovation in the teaching - learning process for this growing

institution. Loyola Vettavalam was fortunate to have such a resourceful Jesuit and an able

greater heights of excellence and development. He was transferred to St. Xavier’s College,

he is sent on mission.

Rev. Fr. S. Arul Ravi, S.J.

Rev. Fr. Arul Ravi, S.J, the Former Vice Principal of our College and Professor of Mathematics,

is a person with a deep sense of commitment and conviction. During his stay in Loyola College,

he was able to reach out to students, staff, parents, parishes and thus he was all to all to save

some. He was very popular among students as well as among staff. He has left an indelible mark

of excellence which is the talk of the campus even today. He is yet another capable teacher and a

person with a variety of talents who contributed his mite to the growth of the department of

Mathematics. He will not look at problems as problems, but find solutions to problems. He was a

good administrator who knew his subordinates by names. He has moved to St. Joseph’s College,

Trichy as the Hostel Director and also to complete his Ph.D. studies. We acknowledge the great

services he rendered to this infant institution during his two years of stay (2010-11 and 2012-13)

ADMISSIONS:

The academic year began for the senior students on 20th June, 2013 and for the first

year students on 1st July 2013 with an inaugural prayer service followed by an introduction of

the new officials and staff. The number of students admitted this year in all the six Under

Graduate courses were 243 compared to 297 admissions last year. It is heartening to note that

admissions in the first three years were on the increase; but it is disheartening to observe that

there is a decline in admissions last year and this year. Various factors like no fees or less fees

and free laptops given to students in the Government colleges, lack of hostel facilities,

insufficient bus services and more fees in our college compared to government colleges, etc. are

some of the reasons for decline in admissions.

Let me give you a brief comparative study of admissions done in the last five years:

2009-10

(5 courses)

English, Bcom,

BBA, BCA &

BSC CS

2010-11

Addition of

Maths and one

203 389 ( +186 ) 429 (+40) 297 (-132) 243 (-54)

The table shows that there was a gradual growth of admissions in the first three years,

but in the fourth and fifth years, there is a declining trend which needs a serious attention. I

wish to state here that the admission drive for next academic year has already been started and I

hope that with the support and cooperation of all of you, there will be sufficient demand for

admissions in our college in May-June 2014.

MEGA EVENTS THIS YEAR

The first historic event that took place in our college at the very beginning of this

academic year was the installation of the new Mission Superior. More than 150 Jesuits from all

parts of Tamil Nadu were present at the Eucharistic celebration presided by Fr Sebasti L. Raj, the

Provincial, at Loyola College, Vettavalam, on 30 June ’13 when the new Chennai Mission

Superior, Fr L. Jebamalai Irudayaraj (called Jebamalai Raja) took charge. In his homily he

promised to take the mission forward towards the liberation of the oppressed in the way that

Jesus followed. He termed the new responsibility as one loaded with both opportunities to serve

and challenges to face. He invited everyone to see the world as Jesus did and imitate Him in

reaching out to the marginalized masses, by having them as the ‘centre of our life and mission.’

After the Mass he was felicitated by Fr Victor Arulappan, the out-going Mission Superior, who

thanked all those who helped him. Fr Provincial, in his concluding remarks, thanked Fr A. Victor

not merely for his significant contribution to the Chennai Mission and the Province but also for

Page 9: LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY 28th … · LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY – 28th March 2014 ... history, and as an occasion ... I stand before you to present a brief

9

his personal friendship and concern. He welcomed and felicitated Fr Jebamalai Raja, and assured

him and the Mission of his full support and wished that the various institutions we have started in

the area should be further developed and that we should extend our service to Dioceses where

our presence now is insignificant. The Provincial thanked Fr Ignatius Amalraj, Superior,

Vettavalam and the Jesuit community and the staff of Loyola College for having been gracious

hosts and splendid organizers.

BUS STOP, OUR GREAT ACHIEVEMENT THIS YEAR

It was our dream project to have a BUS STOP and BUSES TO STOP. Though we have met

several persons to realize our dream project it was St Joseph and Mr Vincent, the GM of

Tiruvannamalai who made it possible. On 19th of March the feast of St Joseph I met the GM in

his office at TVM, requested him for the Govt Buses to stop at our College gate. He promised to

do it. On the very next day, 20th March he sent the checking inspector to make sure that all the

Govt buses stop. All of us are happy and grateful that our dream has become a reality. PRAISE

STATE LEVEL SEMINAR

Amazing Growth in IT and Alarming Ecological Concerns

The Departments of Mathematics, BSc Computer Science and BCA jointly organized a

one day State Level Seminar on 28th February 2014 on the occasion of National Science Day.

The topic of the seminar was "Amazing Growth in IT and Alarming Ecological Concerns".

Rev. Dr. Gregory Thaddeus, Principal, Don Bosco College, Thirupattur gave the inaugural

address and Fr. Alphonse Manickam, S.J., Principal in his felicitation address highlighted the

various forms of pollutions which are serious threats to environment. Dr. Victor Devadoss, Head,

Dept. of Mathematics, Loyola College, Chennai gave the valedictory address. About 180

students and staff from 13 colleges participated in this seminar and 25 research papers were

presented by UG, PG and Research Scholars.

SPECIAL LECTURES AND PROGRAMMES BY THE DEPARTMENTS

Page 10: LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY 28th … · LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY – 28th March 2014 ... history, and as an occasion ... I stand before you to present a brief

10

I am proud to mention that all the seven departments including Tamil of our college

organised about 20 special lectures this year inviting subject experts from other colleges to

motivate and enlighten the students and staff of the respective departments on different topics of

interest.

The Computer Science Department organised computer related Science Exhibition

"PIXEXPO '13" on 26 August 2013 which gave opportunities to the students to be creative and

innovative in exhibiting the works assigned to them. As it was organised on a competitive basis,

students showed lot of interest, involvement and enthusiasm. The Science Expo was so well

organised that the students of all other departments were asked to visit the Expo to become aware

of the new facilities in the world of computers.

The Department of Business Administration organised four 'Shopping Malls' on 19

August, 20 December, 31 January and 28 March, two industrial visits, one for the first year

students to VDSR Rolling Mills, Tiruvannamalai on 14 September and the other for the second

years to GT Electronics and International Bakery Private Ltd., Pondicherry on 22 February and

also a Business Observation Walk for the third year students in Tiruvannamalai on 1 February

2014 with a view to pick up skills to become entrepreneurs and marketing executives. The

departments of BBA and BCOM jointly organised "COMBA '14" on 31 January for School

students on an interesting topic ‘VANIGA KADHAI SOLLA VAARUNGAL’ (convey a

message through story telling). Students from 15 Higher Secondary Schools in Thiruvannamalai

and Villupuram districts participated in this event.

The Commerce Department needs a special mention here for having arranged a Diploma

Course in Advanced Accounting Package Tally 9. 35 students from the departments of

Commerce and Computer Applications are now attending this course which has lot of job

opportunities. The staff of the department took the second year students to Pondicherry on 15

March 2014 to visit IBPL International Bakery Product Limited and Vimkar Private Limited

Company.

Since most of the students admitted in the first year Under Graduate courses were from

Tamil Medium, the Department of English organised Bridge course for them from 8 to 19 July,

2013 to motivate the students on the significance of learning and speaking English. A mega

event organised by the English Department was an inter-collegiate Literary Fest called

"FANTACIYA '14" on 30 January. This is the first of its kind organised by a department in our

Page 11: LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY 28th … · LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY – 28th March 2014 ... history, and as an occasion ... I stand before you to present a brief

11

college, inviting students of English Literature from other colleges to participate in the Literary

Fest. All the colleges under Thiruvalluvar University were invited for the contest. Nearly 150

students from various colleges participated in the contest. Five events, namely, elocution, story

writing, mime, skit and quiz were taken up for the contest. Professors from nearby colleges were

the judges for the events. Fr. Principal appreciated the department for having organized such a

wonderful program and distributed the prizes and certificates to all the participants and winners

in various events. The Rolling Trophy was won by the students of Sacred Heart College,

Tirupathur.

On 5th March an intra- departmental drama fest FESDRA’14 was conducted for the first,

second and third year Literature students and the 'B' section of III year students were declared

winners of the fest. It provided an opportunity for the literature students to upgrade their literary

knowledge and exhibit their literary talents.

BICS (BASICS IN COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS)

A vast majority of the students admitted in Loyola College come from Government

schools where they are not trained to speak and write English. Knowing the background of these

students, right from the beginning of this academic year, Communicative English was offered

one hour daily to all the students to train them to speak English. During the Odd semester,

Communicative English coaching was offered after regular class hours from 2.10 pm to 3 pm.

When the students expressed their difficulty to concentrate after 2 pm, the timing was

rescheduled as follows during the Even semester: First hour for the 3rd year students, third hour

for the 1st years and fourth hour for the 2nd year students. A team of staff coordinated by Mrs.

Deepa Prem of the Department of English prepared the syllabus focussing on listening, speaking,

reading and writing skills. Varied methods were followed to impart teaching-learning skills. To

mention some of them: screening of movies, video clippings, Power Point, group discussion, role

play, story-telling, preparing CV and presenting oneself, mock interview, etc. The 3rd year

students were given special attention on personality development, communication and soft skills.

Since the college is equipped with sufficient Smart Class Rooms, these innovative programs

were effectively offered. I wish to place on record the generosity of all the staff in general and

the staff of the English department in particular who rendered one hour free service daily out of

Page 12: LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY 28th … · LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY – 28th March 2014 ... history, and as an occasion ... I stand before you to present a brief

12

regular class hours. A vast majority of the students expressed a deep sense of satisfaction and

appreciation for having motivated them to speak English.

SKIT FEST

The Department of English organized an Inter- Departmental academic competition on

30th Oct for all the classes having General English as one of the papers. The respective staff of

each classes took the initiative to train the students. Totally 11 teams representing 11 classes

participated in the contest. The aim of the program was to provide a platform for the students to

exhibit their communicative and dramatic skills, to overcome stage fear and gain confidence to

face smaller or bigger audience. This special innovative program was chaired by Fr. Principal.

MR. D. Maria Edward Raj, HR from WIPRO, Chennai was invited to be the Judge. II BA

English won the second place and II B. Sc Mathematics won the first place.

IQAC (INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL)

IQAC plays an important role in promoting quality measures in higher educational

institutions. Mrs. Deepa Prem assumed office as the Coordinator. In its very first meeting held

on 13th August 2013, Fr. Principal explained the role IQAC plays in enhancing and sustaining

quality in all the programmes and activities of the college. He motivated the Cell to collect and

maintain documents of all the programmes and activities carried out in the college from the first

year onwards. Accordingly, IQAC visited all the Departments on 7th and 8th of Oct 2013 and

again on 21st and 22nd of Feb 2014 to motivate them to maintain files of all the activities of the

department for the past five years and to check whether they are properly documented and

preserved. IQAC also conducted an online evaluation of the staff performance by the students at

the end of the Odd semester and presented the findings to the Principal to communicate the same

to the staff. The Annual Quality Assurance Report for this academic year has already been

prepared and presented to Fr. Principal. As the college will complete five year in May 2014

(period required to apply to NAAC), the IQAC will initiate the process of applying to NAAC for

Assessment and Accreditation in 2014-15.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

Quality teaching in a college depends upon the quality of the teachers. If an institution is

blessed with teachers who are committed, competent and confident to communicate, only such

Page 13: LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY 28th … · LOYOLA COLLEGE, VETTAVALAM COLLEGE DAY – 28th March 2014 ... history, and as an occasion ... I stand before you to present a brief

13

an institution will be able to produce students of merit and quality. Keeping this principle in

mind, Fr. Principal organized a half–a–day Faculty Development Programme on 25th November,

2013 to motivate the staff to employ right methodology in the teaching profession. As the

modern youth are confronted with the amazing technological advancement, teachers must update

themselves not only to inspire, but challenge their students both inside and outside class rooms.

How much of knowledge a teacher possesses is not important, but how best he/she

communicates to his/her students and creates interest in them is the need of the hour. With this

focus in mind, the Secretary and the Principal spoke to the staff on the importance of

communication skills. Then Fr. Eugine Rosario, S.J, Head, Department of Business

Administration, gave an interesting session on the teaching methodology. While explaining the

pedagogy of teaching, he asked the staff to bear in mind the following points.

Keep the students engaged / Never waste their time.

Carry a smile on your face when going to classes.

Keep the classes interesting / A serious class is always boring.

Never expose your inadequacy to the students.

Create a non-judgmental atmosphere in the class.

Work hard and prepare well before going to class.

Feel relaxed once the class is in progress.

He explained these concepts with illustrations through power point. The program was

quite creative and informative. A movie “Stand and Deliver” was screened as part of the training

programme. On 3rd of January 2014, Mr. L. Selvam, Head, Dept. of Computer Science gave an

interactive session on how to appear for an interview. The Power Point presentation by Mr. L.

Selvam motivated the staff on the skills, approach and attitude required while appearing for an

interview.

PARENTS TEACHERS MEETING

Parents- Teachers Meeting for II and III UG students was organised on 31st Aug 2013. It

was presided over by Rev. Fr. G. Arockiaraj, S.J., the Secretary. The Heads of the departments

were present for the meeting. Prof. A. Sheela, the Vice-Principal, welcomed the gathering. Rev.

Dr. Alphonse Manickam, S.J., the Principal, explained to them the various infrastructure

14

facilities available for student promotion, classes on communicative English offered to all the

students one hour daily to improve their English, plans to provide hostel facilities for boys and

girls and the increased salary given to staff from this year.

The main objective of the meeting was to distribute Mark Statements of the previous

semester and inform the parents/wards the academic progress and attendance of the students. It

THE CHIEF GUEST

Our Chief guest Dr. G Viswanathan is a good friend of the Jesuits. I listened to some of his

speeches, both in Loyola College and outside. I came to understand that he loves Loyola College

and the Jesuits who educated him in LC. I heard him speaking very high of the professors of LC

of his time. He said once that he got the idea from the Jesuits how to run an educational

institution. I was impressed by him. I have great admiration and appreciation for Dr

Viswanathan.

When I invited him to St Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai two year ago as the chief guest for the

Graduation ceremony, he said that he has come to the “Periamma’s house” meaning, LC was

started in 1925, and SXC was started in 1923. SXC is older that LC. That’s why he said that LC

is his mother’s house and SXC is Periamma’s house.” In the past he took the inspiration and the

model from the Jesuits. Time has come that we Jesuits and others who wish to run educational

institutions take him as model. His institution is an international university, where students from

many countries of the world are studying. We should all visit his university. I visited it last week

when I went to give the invitation card. I was very much impressed by the kind of facilities

provided to students and staff to study, to do research, etc.

Sir, we are proud of your vision and achievement in providing quality education to the poor and

the rich. This institution wishes to build good relationship with your University for further

development. It is my dream that one day LCV should become something like the VIT

University, Vellore. I thank you very sincerely for having accepted to come for our college day

celebration and we look forward to your guidance and support in the areas of communicative

English to our students and research facilities to our staff. Once again I thank you on behalf the

Jesuit Management, staff and students of LCV. May God bless all your efforts in providing

affordable quality education to the youth of today.
