James Kilbourne Jones was born on July 10, 1836 at Columbus, Ohio to Ichabod Gibson Jones and Cynthia Kilbourne. In his youth, he attended a common school in Columbus. During that time he also attended two years of military school in Springfield, Ohio. In 1854, he entered Kenyon College and graduated in 1858 with a Bachelor's Degree. After graduating, he read law with John W. Andrews and Henry C. Noble for two and a half years. Hearing Lincoln's call for volunteers, he joined Co. C, 2nd Ohio Infantry on April 17, 1861 and was commissioned a 1st. Lieutenant. The 2nd along with him were mustered into Federal service the next day. The regiment soon embarked on trains for Washington, DC to serve in the fortifications that surrounded the city until July of 1861. On July 16, the regiment marched for Manassas, Va. and occupied Fairfax Courthouse the next day. The regiment along with Lt. Jones took part in the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21 and retreated towards Washington, DC after General McDowell's defeat. The 2nd along with Jones was mustered out on July 31, 1861 as it was only a 90 day Regiment. Apparently, he still felt his country's call as he joined Co. A, 24th Ohio Infantry on January 9, 1862 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. The 24th was at Camp Wickliffe in Kentucky when he joined the
regiment. From Feb. 25-March 17, the regiment took part in the advance and occupation of Nashville, TN. After taking part in the occupation of Nashville, the regiment was ordered to march to Savannah, TN arriving there on April 5. On the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, after marching 11 miles through thick swampland, they arrived in the early evening. Officials ordered the regiment to engage the enemy, hoping that the Ohioans could help blunt the Confederate assault that had driven the Union army back several miles to the Tennessee River during the course of the day. On the next morning, after much of the Union's Army of the Ohio had arrived on the field, the Northerners launched a counterattack, forcing the Southerners to retreat. In this Union victory, the 24th had four enlisted men killed and twenty-eight more soldiers wounded. After the battle, the regiment was order to Corinth, MS to take part in the siege there. Unfortunately, on the march to Corinth, Lt. Jones had a sunstroke which caused him to become so disabled that he had to tender his resignation on April 27, 1862. On account of his health, he was unable to resume his law studies but was able to recover well enough to return to Kenyon College to get his Master's Degree. After his graduation, he went into the hardware business with his uncle, Lincoln Kilbourne and his cousin, Owen L. Jones. The hardware firm ended up being named Kilbourne, Jones & Company. He remained in hardware business for the rest of his life. Sometime prior to 1880, Jones married Annette Denig, daughter of Dr. R. M. Denig of Columbus. On June 6, 1883, former Lt. Jones was elected a Companion of the First Class in the Commandery of the State of Ohio, being assigned Insignia No. 2784 and Commandery No. 48. He was very active in the Commandery attending dinners, meetings and recommending many former officers for membership in the Ohio Commandery. On May 15, 1889, he filed for a veterans' pension, which he received. Starting in the early 1880's, he served as 3rd VP of the General Alumni Association at Kenyon College returning every year for commencement. He spent a week every year at the college for commencement. At his alma mater, he was also very active member of the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. He wrote the song "All Together", which became one of the most sung songs in

Commander-in-Chief’s Message Companions, I just returned from a great time in Springfield, Illinois, where about 300 people attended the 135th National Encampment, in the sesquicentennial year of the GAR/SUVCW. There were almost 30 MOLLUS Companions in attendance, and we had many Sons show a great interest in our Order. DOLLUS was represented by the Bury & Rock families, and all of the Allied Orders of the SUVCW were there. The Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was cordially received at the banquet, and he especially enjoyed getting his picture taken with our own Companion, John Grant Griffiths. John is a great-great grandson of President US Grant, and also a grandson of PCiC General US Grant III. Speaking of Rebels, I'd like to make a correction to my biography, which states that I am the first person to ever be a National Officer in both MOLLUS & MOSB at the same time. Our own beloved PCiC Jerry Caroon, was the first man to ever hold simultaneous National Offices in both Civil War Officer Corps Orders, in addition to many other Noble Orders and Societies. Our 131st National Congress in Pensacola is October 14 & 15, and I personally invite each and every Companion and Dame, with your families, to join us in our exciting invasion of Florida. VA Commandery Air Force 2nd Lieutenant, and Virginia Companion, Zachary Burnett received his Navigator wings in a ceremony at Naval Air Station Pensacola on 24 June. He has been assigned as a Combat Systems Officer (CSO) on board a “Special Ops” C-130J, operating out of Cannon AFB in New Mexico. Lt. Barnett is the grandson of past Virginia Commander Richard
Bishop. Past C-in-C Jeffry Burden represented the Legion and made remarks on Memorial Day, as part of the annual ceremony organized by the National Park Service at Fort Harrison National Cemetery near Richmond. *************************** CT Commandery On Memorial Day, Companions Jerry Carroon (P C-in-C), Lee Tryon (Treasurer) and Harry Colvocoresses (CT Commander) met at Hartford's
Cedar Hill Cemetery to place flags on the graves of Civil War officers and MOLLUS Companions. With assistance of Harry's wife Elaine, we found the gravesite of Joseph Hopkins Twichell, who was a close friend of Hartford's famous author, Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). The character Harris in Twain's book A Tramp Abroad is based on Twichell. Twichell had been the pastor of Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford for 47 years . And Twichell officiated at Twain's wedding and the funerals of Twain and his children. During the Civil War, Twichell had been the Chaplin of the 71st NY and later a MOLLUS Companion (insignia # 12559). On Sunday July 10th the CT Commandery met at the New England Civil War Museum in Rockville for our annual meeting. Our principal item of business was the election of officers. Harry Colvocoresses and Ken Roach were reelected for another 2-year term as Commander and Senior Vice Commander, respectively. Rev. Patrick Perkins was elected as Junior Vice Commander and Lee Tryon was reelected to the positions of Treasurer and Recorder.
OH Commandery The Ohio Commandery will return to
the Hayes Presidential Library in Fremont, Ohio on Saturday, 10 September, for their Annual meeting. Companions are encouraged to gather at the Wang’s restaurant for an informal luncheon at 11am before the meeting. The Companions of the Ohio Commandery wish to congratulate Companion Shawn Cox for completing his very successful year as Commander of the Ohio Department SUVCW, and on his election and installation as Second Vice President of the Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution. We are equally pleased to congratulate our Commandery's Senior Vice Commander, Peter Hritsko on his election and installation as the new Commander of the Department of Ohio, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

MOLLUS Members attend the 150th founding of the
Grand Army of the Republic
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War met in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield, Illinois from the 11th through the 13th of August to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic. The event, known as the National Encampment, was held along with two of the Allied Orders of the G.A.R., namely the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic along with the Auxiliary to the SUVCW. Both of these two Orders held their National Meeting at the same time. The Woman’s Relief Corps held their National Encampment immediately following in the same town, and attended the joint banquet. Of the one hundred and some SUVCW members, there were thirty some MOLLUS Companions who as members of the SUVCW were in attendance. The group had the pleasure of having their picture taken, along with the Loyal Legion Commander-in-Chief Jim Simmons, during festivities. Although no pictures were taken, there were several members of DOLLUS present including its National President Lynne Bury.

New National Membership List Coordinator, National Webmaster, and Chair of the National Standing Committee on the Internet Sought.
Past Commander-in-Chief Keith Harrison informed the Executive Board that he will be stepping down after the 2016 National Congress from his appointed offices of National Membership List Coordinator, National Webmaster, and Chair of the National Standing Committee on the Internet. Keith has been in the three appointed positions of National Membership List Coordinator, National Webmaster, and Chair of the National Standing Committee on the Internet for the last 21 years (since 1995), and as indicated by him, that by his continuing to serve in these positions, no one else will ever learn them, which is not healthy for any organization. It really is time for other Companions to take over these responsibilities. Presented below are the job descriptions for the National Membership List Coordinator, National Webmaster, and National Committee on the Internet. Interested Companions should review these descriptions to understand fully what is entailed with these three appointed positions. The most involved of the positions is that of the National Membership List Coordinator, which takes continual vigilance to keep the National Membership List up to date and send out each year the current Commandery membership listing as of April 30 to each Commandery for verification and resolution if needed. This position also provides the Historical Journal Editor-in-Chief on a quarterly basis with the names and addresses of all the MOLLUS and DOLLUS members so a continually updated database is of the utmost importance. Everything is already set up electronically and should be relatively easy to someone with some inkling of computers and MS Access Databases (or less preferred, MS Excel) to pick this up. Another of the responsibilities of the National Membership List Coordinator is the creation of the annual Proceedings of the National Congresses and the Midwinter meetings. Without the creation of the Proceedings, the minutes by themselves are virtually meaningless. For example, the minutes often indicate that some officer presented or discussed his written report. Without the inclusion of officers’, committees’, and Commanderies’ actual written reports, future readers of the minutes would not have any idea whatsoever of what was presented and/or discussed at that meeting. Here again, the candidate would need to be conversant with computers and Microsoft Word and pdf documents. As part of the transition, Keith will still prepare the 2016 National Congress Proceedings, but the newly appointed Companion would need to be ready to take over doing the Proceedings for the 2017 Midwinter meeting. In terms of the National Webmaster, while a general facelift is always a good goal in terms of websites, the Commandery-in-Chief is most interested in looking for someone who, first and foremost, can ensure that the website’s informational content is kept up to date. All too often, the goal of some organizations is to create some really fancy website with all the bells and whistles resulting is a website that is overly complicated, difficult to navigate, and uninformative. JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP LIST COORDINATOR Purpose: The purpose of the office of National Membership List Coordinator is to ensure maintenance of the roster of current and past members of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) and Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States (DOLLUS) and maintenance of the mailing lists for the MOLLUS, DOLLUS and other recipients of the Loyal Legion Historical Journal. Activities: The activities of the National Membership List Coordinator should include the responsibilities listed below. Develop and maintain a database of current and past MOLLUS Companion names, Insignia Numbers, addresses, Commandery affiliation, and membership status (Hereditary, Associate, Honorary, Junior Hereditary, Junior Live, National Life, Dropped, Resignation, Death). Develops and maintains a database of current and past DOLLUS member names, numbers, addresses, Society affiliation, and

membership status (Dropped, Resignation, Death). Develop and maintain a database of Library and other repository addresses for mailing of the Loyal Legion Historical Journal. Provide annually each MOLLUS Commandery with a listing of its Commandery membership as of April 30th (the date from which Commanderies are to base their Annual assessment). Provide quarterly the Editor-in-Chief with electronic address labels for MOLLUS and DOLLUS members and libraries for mailing of the Loyal Legion Historical Journal. Cause, in cooperation with the Registrar-in-Chief, the creation and publication in hard copy every fifth year a National Roster of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States and a National Roster of the Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Provide periodically membership lists as requested by MOLLUS Commanderies or DOLLUS Societies. Update continually the national MOLLUS and DOLLUS membership database base on new member information provided each Order. JOB DESCRIPTION FOR NATIONAL WEBMASTER Purpose: The purpose of the office of National Webmaster is to ensure that the Commandery-in-Chief's Internet presence operates in an efficient and effective manner at all times and to be responsible for all aspects of the Commandery-in-Chief's Web presence, including Web content development, technical operations, and daily maintenance. Activities: The activities of the National Webmaster should include the responsibilities listed below. Manage the Commandery-in-Chief's Internet communication resources to include effective use of electronic mail, and a World Wide Web Internet Web site. Provide proactive and reactive administration and maintenance of the Commandery-in-Chief's Web site. Serve on the Standing National Committee on the Internet. Take overall responsibility for content and data quality and integrity of the Commandery-in-Chief's Web site and ensure that there exists a consistency in terms of how all National pages are presented on the Internet. Ensure that the National Web site is as error free as possible (no broken links, no inoperable e-mail addresses, etc) and that such errors, if not capable of being fixed within 72 hours of notice, are removed from the National Web site. Ensure that the files on the National website are backed up at least monthly and provide annually to the Recorder-in-Chief and National Historian a copy of all information needed to access the website server and MOLLUS Internet files. Serve on and/or chair Special National Committees created by the Commander-in-Chief, National Congress, or Board of Officers. Provide technical assistance to Commandery Webmasters. Update affected files within 72 hours of the conclusion of the annual National Congress. Assure ready access to electronic mail for the transaction of the Commandery-in-Chief's business. the fraternity. In 1908, he became a sufferer from bladder trouble. It became so serious that in May of 1910, he submitted himself for surgery at Grant Hospital in Columbus. Unfortunately the surgery was unsuccessful. He passed away on July 22, 1910. The funeral services were held from his late residences, 334 East Town Street, July 25th, the Rev. Theodore I. Reese officiating. He was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery.

MEMORIAL PROGRAM: The Ceremony Honoring President Abraham Lincoln’s 208th Birthday will
begin at 12 Noon with a prelude of music by a Military Service Band at 11:45 am. Members of the Third Infantry Regiment (Old Guard) will
provide the Joint Services Color Guard and Honor Guard. The Gettysburg Address presenter will be announced later.
Presentation of the Frederick Talley Drum Hunt Award will be presented by Commander-in-Chief, MOLLUS to an honor student at the Severn School,
Severna Park, MD. Wreaths will be placed by or for the President, the Diplomatic Corps, Secretary of the Interior, Mayor of the District of
Columbia, Lincoln Birthday National Commemorative Committee, and hereditary and patriotic societies. Program arranged and sponsored by the
LBNCC, the National Park Service, and the Military District of Washington.

Trustees’ Corner In the past few issues, we’ve discussed the basic structure of the Loyal Legion Memorial Fund, and the role of the Fund trustees. Now let’s take a closer look at the tax status of the Fund. The Memorial Fund was created in 1955 as the vehicle in which the Military Order of the Loyal Legion could collect cash gifts in a “tax-advantaged” way — that is, the gifts would be fully tax-deductible on the donor’s tax return. The Fund has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax exempt under the terms of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Not only are gifts tax-deductible by the giver, but the Fund itself is not taxed on any difference between revenues and expenses. The Memorial Fund (or any 501(c)(3) organization maintains its tax-exempt status if its activities have one or more of the following purposes: charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering amateur sports competition, or preventing cruelty to children or animals. Of course, most of these don’t apply to the Order, but the “charitable” and “educational” purposes fall right into our wheelhouse. Besides funding publication of the Historical Journal, the Fund trustees seek out worthy organizations and projects that advance educational and historical interests related to the Civil War and the armed forces of the Union. In fact, Companions are welcome to suggest entities or projects for consideration by the trustees as a donee. In short, your gifts to the Memorial Fund end up supporting the ideals and goals of the Order while providing a distinct tax advantage to you.

Establish an initial presence on the Internet through the development of a national home page and home pages for every Commandery. Establish the presence on the Internet of the: A. Order’s original Commandery War papers B. Loyal Legion Vignettes and through it the promotion of high quality literary papers dealing with the Civil War, Original Companions, and the Order C. Listing of all the Original Companions of the Order (Nearly 12,000 Names) D. Biographies of Past Commanders-in-Chief of Order E. Companion Medal of Honor Recipients F. Prominent Companions G. Prominent Companion Politicians H. Loyal Legion Historical Journal I. Individual Commandery Newsletters H. Other Items of Historical Significance Assure ready access to electronic mail for the transaction of the Order's business. Perform all other duties delegated to the office by Commandery-in-Chief's Constitution and By-Laws, National Congress, and Commander-in-Chief. Prepare an annual report to the Commander-in-Chief and National Congress on the activities of the National Committee on the Internet.
