    Lower Saddle Approach 2012

    SEPTEMBER 8 ,2012

    The approach the the Lower saddle remains snow-free. Recently, however, the water source at the Lower

    Saddle has only been productive after midday.

    Remember that shortcutting not only causes erosion and signficant resource damage, but

    may be cause for citation by a backcountry ranger. Please remain on the well travelled and

    marked trails in the backcountry of Grand Teton National Park.

    No ice axe needed to approach the Lower Saddle.

    The fixed rope is melted out on the Lower Saddle headwall. No ice axe necessary to reach

    the Lower Saddle.

    Caves, Moraine and Lower Saddle camping sites are dry.

    Most parties are using the Summer/Fall route up from the Petzolt Caves. The Headwall

    below the Saddle is still steep snow. Ice axe is mandatory and crampons are nice for folks

    with limited snow skills.

    JUNE 23, 2012

    The trail is patchy between the Platforms & Meadows and melting fast. Most of trail to the

    Petzoldt Caves is showing as well. The winter approach is still possible to the Moraine, but

    the Caves Trail may be good to go soon. All snow above the Caves.

    crampons are recommended.

    Grand.

    The trail to the Platforms is mostly snow free. Some patched still linger just below the

    Platforms. Above the Platforms is mostly snow. The headwalls above the Meadows and the

    Moraine Camp are 100% snow and the winter route is recommended. The fixed line is still

    under snow.
