ContentsContentsA Message for You...

A message from West Grove Primary School’s Mrs Nancy Tan, who thought of simplifying NLB’s Dare to Read activity for the lower

primary and P3 Chinese language students.

Since 2013, West Grove Primary School has been collaborating with the National Library Board (NLB) for various interesting reading programmes to promote reading. One of the recent programmes was the Dare to Read activity workbook. It is an illustrated activity package with a fresh approach to promote reading.

The school’s Media Resource Library (MRL) team initially intended to launch NLB’s Dare to Read activity as part of the annual Reading Fortnight. While planning for the event, it was found that NLB’s content may be too difficult for the school’s P1 and P2 students. The MRL team decided to modify the booklets to suit the younger students. So Mdm Koh Shini, one of our MRL committee members, took on this task and reviewed NLB’s SG50 version of Dare to Read for the P1 and P2 students, to identify areas where the learning experience for the lower levels can be enhanced. We kept the learning objectives set out by NLB: promoting thinking skills, encouraging students to read more and making reading fun. The edited package also added some opportunities for Social and Emotional Learning competencies and Collaborative Learning strategies interactions.

To promote Chinese Mother Tongue, we translated this lower primary booklet into Chinese. This is done by Mdm Tang Oi Kum, one of our Chinese Language teachers. We also changed some of the activities to suit the language’s flavour. This booklet was used by our P3 students during the Reading Fortnight.

With the support of my school leaders and the commitment of my school staff, both of these modified booklets were successful in getting the students to be participative and to complete all the tasks. We would like to thank NLB for the original package and allowing us to modify them to suit our situation. We are also appreciative of the tremendous efforts that NLB had put into this programme to support schools’ efforts in promoting reading.

Mission 1: Where Are We? Mission 1:

Where Are We?

Hello Adventurer

_____________________________,(Write your name above!)

I am Ping, a light warrior of the Erson family.

My parents have been sent back in time and imprisoned in the past by the Sandman, and I have to

save them.

The Sandman accidentally told me the time period in which

my parents have been hidden.

I have found a spell that will send me back to that time.

Please join me in my mission to rescue my parents!

Ping’s StoryPing’s Story

Ping did not know where he was. He heard screams and looked around. He could tell the place had been bombed. An old map was on the floor. Ping picked it up to find out where he was.

After finding out the name of the place, Ping remembered that the country had been taken over by the Japanese many years ago.

It was then renamed Syonan-to, which means Light of the South.

Ping knew that he had gone back to the year 1942.

Congratulations!

He needed to get to the year 1965.

To activate the watch, he had to follow the instructions on it.

Mission 6:What Is This Story?

Mission 7:Put Them In Order!

The Sandman was in the secret chamber!

The Sandman disappeared with a gust of wind, leaving behind an old note and a treasure box.

Why were there so many small pieces of paper in the box? The pictures seemed to be telling a story! Could they tell Ping where his parents were hidden?

Help Ping arrange the pictures in order by writing the number of each picture’s position in the circles below. Then fill in the blanks with the corresponding letters to find out

where Ping’s parents are!

Clue: This is the story of how the country in Mission 1 got its name.

Legend has it that Singapore was named by a great prince named Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion on the island .

CREEEEEEEAK!

When you wrote down the title of the story, the box opened.

The name of the story is

If you can name the story, the treasure will be yours!

Once upon a time, Mother Pig sent her little ones out to learn to live on

their own. Mother Pig told them it was important to have a strong and

sturdy house, so the Big Bad Wolf would not be able to blow it down.

All the little pigs went off to build their own little house.

Impossible! How did you know the password to the chamber? No matter - even if you are here, you will not save them! I have

hidden them elsewhere. As for the key... only readers will be able to get it! Hahaha!
