Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is a famous Japanese creator of animated movies or “anime” as it is usually called. He
started out as an animator at Toei Animation in 1963. He helped to create a movie called “Hols: Prince
of the Sun” in 1968. The following year, he directed an animated film called “Puss in Boots”. He also
drew comic books to promote the film. As a result, many people went to see it.
During the 1970s, Miyazaki helped to make more films and a hit TV series. By the early 1980s, his work
had become popular in Japan. In 1984, Miyazaki made one of his biggest and most successful
animation films yet. It was called “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”. This science fiction film was
about a girl who could communicate with monsters. The film showed Miyazaki's concern about the
relationship between humans and nature.
After Nausicaa's success, Miyazaki started his own animation studio called “Studio Ghibli”. It made
several famous films. The first one was called “Castle in the Sky”. The next was called “My Neighbor
Totoro”, which came out in 1988. In 1995, Ghibli released “Princess Mononoke”. Some of these movies
had political or environmental themes. Others were just fun movies that anyone could enjoy.
Miyazaki's studio continued making movies into the 1990s and 2000s. In 2013, he made his final film,
“The Wind Rises”. This is a story about the creator of the Zero airplane. Since then, Miyazaki has
retired and has not made any more movies. Despite this, Studio Ghibli has recently released several
new movies.
