DR. FOZ "REVEAL"

Hi, everyone! I'm not too sure how I feel about this... Back in September, I was offered this position and I had assumed it would stay anonymous FOREVER. Much to my dismay, I was told that I would be revealing myself to the whole school a few months later.

I figured rather than writing about how much I loved being Dr. Foz, which I did (It was fun), I'd tell you about the behind the scenes of a day in the life of Dr. Foz.

First of all, once a week, I'd have to check the box at the front desk in super stealth mode (couldn't risk blowing my cover), only to find about two or three serious questions in a handful of questions that were absolutely ridiculous. I soon discovered that not only did you all expect me to give you advice, but also be your matchmaker, create new school lunches and bring about

change in many other aspects of school life.

Second of all, we had to make sure certain questions were, let's just say, appropriate enough for our highly reputable school newspaper. 98% of the time they weren't.

Indeed, I'd like to give a shout-out to the following people that submitted these questions that could never be submitted: you made my year.

1. I don't know if this is the right box but I would greatly appreciate Sriracha sauce in the lunchroom.2. How is babby formed?(Still laughing at this one … both for its content and poor grammar)4. What do I do while I wait for my Chinese (food)?5. And all the other submissions that revolved around certain people "getting girls" and "stealing my man." On a more serious note, if I learned one thing from being Dr. Foz it's that a lot of you stress too much over school, success and failing. I read once on a blog that accepting failure will lead to success. Failure isn't being at the end of your rope; that happens inevitably in life. Failure is when you choose not to try again. "Once you understand failure, it's impossible to fail."

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions and suggestions, to everyone behind the scenes and to everyone who bothered to read my column.

Get  to  know  Mr.  Shannon

The Wire: What’s your favourite book?

Mr. Shannon: I don’t really have a favourite book. I’ll tell you about the last book I read, though. It’s a book by a Vietnamese immigrant to Canada called Ru. It won the Governor General’s Award. It’s the story—which I always find very interesting—of the immigrant experience. Imagine going into a completely different culture with a different language and figuring it out. I think it’s a massively challenging thing. After the Vietnam War, when the Communists won, people were so desperate they paid a lot of money and got on boats headed toward the South China Sea. They ended up in refugee camps. Once in the camps, if they were lucky, they got settled somewhere in the world. Ru is the story of a young girl who finds herself living in Granby, Quebec. So, she’s sitting in high school in Granby and all her friends around her are complaining that they cannot believe the horror of their horrendously boring history textbook, and she’s just quietly thinking in her mind: this is their worst problem? She’d come from an environment of extraordinary deprivation. Everything was taken out from underneath them. I find a fascination with that kind of thing because I think it’s impossible for us as Canadians to truly understand how lucky we are in this world. I’ve seen enough of the world to know that. I’ve seen a lot of deprivation, and you know, I send that message to our students a lot; to get out, see and smell, because then you’ll understand what

a miracle Canada is, which I think it is.

The Wire: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

Mr. Shannon: My first full-time job was as a news writer and a videographer for City TV in Toronto in the early 80s. I basically ended up in Toronto because at that time interest rates were close to 20%, inflation was high, and there was a recession. Getting work was not easy, so I was lucky to find a job anywhere. I worked as a writer, and after six or eight months I was going to be laid off because they had to cut back on expenses. They fired a news cameraman, and they said we’ll give you three weeks to learn this job and if you can do it, we’ll keep you, and if you can’t, we can’t.

The Wire: What are your thoughts on LCC vs. Selwyn, having gone to Selwyn yourself?

Mr. Shannon: I think Selwyn is a great school. I went there and all five of my brothers went there. We’ve had a long family association with the school. I have the view that a rising tide lifts all ships. I think that we offer different choices to people and that’s really good. They do some things very well that help to lift the tide. However, I would only be the head of a coed school. I believe the diversity of what a coed school offers to kids is really important. I think for you as girls that teaming with, being in class with, and becoming friends with boys and normalizing it is very important. The same goes for boys with girls. I

think it’s the best model for most kids, most of the time. I don’t believe that it’s the only model for everybody; diversity of choice is really good. I believe that the whole school environment as a single-sex school does not address the needs of most kids most of the time.

The Wire: If you could give one piece of advice to the entire LCC community, what would it be?

Mr. Shannon: Be yourself, and allow the “adult” you to emerge naturally. I believe in the good in people and think that every kid has hidden qualities that they don’t know they possess. Be confident that you have those skills and let them take you wherever they go. I was interested in journalism and I ended up in a newsroom. I did that for a couple of years and then I ended up in education.

There are pressures on everyone, but over time, people will emerge into the person they are going to be. As long as they’ve got the right attitude, it’s going to be something good. I’ve seen it happen time, and time again.

The Wire: What’s next for LCC?

Mr. Shannon: Tying together the new IB curriculum, the Duke of Ed programme, some of the Round Square ethos (which is really a global outlook), and bringing a lot of these elements together. For us to tie together some of these programmes about the global ethos is just probably smart in the sense that we’ve done a lot of facility development in the last little while and we’ll probably have less of that in the next couple of years, less need to do it. I think we’ve always concentrated on our programmes and we’re happy to develop them, but I’m just happy to focus on that and make sure we’re doing the best that we can do.

Recommended Summer Reads

By Angel Vreedenburgh

The temptation to sloth it out in the summer is strong, and even though it’s a two-month vacation from school, there’s really no excuse for you not to read a single thing for 90 days. You can read a couple of pages before bed, while you’re tanning by the pool or, my own personal favorite, at a

Starbucks, isolating yourself from all forms of social interaction in a corner with your book and a cappuccino. Trust me, when you choose to read for leisure out of your own free will, reading becomes a million times more enjoyable. Without further ado, here are my personal must-read recommendations for this summer!

1. The Fault in our Stars (John Green)- The movie is coming out so make sure you know your stuff!2. The Wee Free Men (Terry Pratchett)- Easy to get through and ridiculously entertaining. Good for you boys out there with the attention span of a goldfish.3. The Book Thief (Markus Zusak)- If you loved the movie, you’ll adore the book.4. The Other Boleyn Girl (Philippa Gregory)- Philippa Gregory manages to make history actually seem interesting. Kind of also makes you want to try on a petticoat.5. The Maze Runner (James Dashner)- Fast paced, well- written

and the movie’s coming out in the fall, so don’t miss out on a chance to show off your impressive knowledge of the story when you go see it with your friends.6. The Summer I Turned Pretty (Jenny Han)- You can’t really go wrong with this book. It’s sweet, funny, girly and romantic. I read it for the first time in middle school and I would definitely read it again.7. Divergent (Veronica Roth)- if you haven’t already read this, then you’re missing out, my friend. The movie just doesn’t hold a candle to the book, and if you loved The Hunger Games, you’ll love this just as much.8. The Physician (Noah Gordon)- For you more ambitious readers. This book is a hefty 600 pages of small text, but once you delve into it, you’ll wish it was even longer! It’s an incredible, gripping tale that takes you across Europe to the enchanting land of Persia.

MUSIC PROFILE:

By Vikki Van Ryswyk

Yes, I know what you're thinking: me again! I was asked to make a music profile on, well, myself. I started singing in Grade 9 because of a dare. I was dared to sing “Clocks” by Coldplay at Café Cabaret. After that, things just kind of...happened. I started posting covers on YouTube after I got my first guitar in 2012. YouTube was a great way to start out, for me at least, because it gave me an opportunity to get feedback from people around the world that I didn't even know. I only started sharing my videos with my friends after my third or fourth cover. I've had quite a bit of success with that, which I'm super happy about, especially since Emblem 3 and One Direction both saw one of my covers. So, yeah, YouTube's been fab for me, and I highly recommend you use it to branch out in what you love. Link: www.youtube.com/vikkigil

Another thing that got me started was the LCC music programme. If it weren't for Mr. Cox and Mr. Cheyne constantly

giving me feedback, helping me with recordings and tools that will help me out with my endeavours after I leave LCC, I probably wouldn't have continued singing and songwriting. If you plan on doing a project, any recordings or you need music advice, in general, I suggest you go ask them. They'll really help you get your work off of the ground. I've been writing songs since I was seven (lyrics back then usually went something like: "Don't, don't forget about all those fun times, and all those dumb dimes that we spent on those fun times"), and I have about 45 songs collectively. I never really planned on doing anything with them until I started doing gigs, singing at events and working with other artists.

I've been exploring the music industry, seeing how record labels work, working in studio, designing websites and digital art and branching out by singing for different foundations like the Vimy Foundation and Lung Cancer Canada. More recently, I've been working on a project for French class, called Projet Intégrateur, where I have been making an EP style CD. It is called Hope/Espoir, and I made it to raise lung cancer awareness after my aunt died of the disease last October, having never

smoked a day in her life. She wanted people to know that almost 50 per cent of the people in Canada who are diagnosed with lung cancer are non-smokers or former smokers. The stigma “that if you have it, you did it to yourself” needs to go. According to the Cancer Society of Canada, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, yet it is poorly funded. The album is currently available on CD Baby, iTunes, and Amazon. All proceeds will go to lung cancer and respiratory disease research.

So, I hope that gave you a little bit of insight on what I do and how I do it!

Happy month of May, people of LCC. The stars are in full form this month, and I will carefully extract whatever secrets or fortunes they may hold. However, I fear the gods have not been kind to me, friends, for I have contracted the dreadful ailment called Mononucleosis. I have been bedridden for many days, and probably will remain bedridden for many more. But the stars, as they say, stop for no one. It will forever remain my duty to provide you all with the horoscopes.

Aries (21 March - 19 April):Exams are coming up. Show your teachers how prepared you are and study. If you want to impress them even more, add a surprise element to it. Write the entire exam in upside-down writing. Or, better yet, in red pen. There’s no better way to prove you’re ahead of the curve.

Taurus (20 April - 20 May):Enjoy these last few weeks of school. Everyone in every grade is about to make a transition, so enjoy the last ten or so days you have in the comfort of what you have come to know.

Gemini (21 May - 21 June):Darn. I forgot to make that one stupid.

Gemini 2 (22 June - 23 Jul): Attack of the ClonesCancer had to be cancelled this month (sorry guys) so here’s another fortune for the Geminis. Have you ever eaten peanut butter straight out of the jar with a spoon? If so, you’re one step closer to living a full life.

Leo (24 July - 23 Aug):You have the coolest symbol for your astrological sign and you know it. Seriously, Libra gets some scales and you’re a lion.

Virgo (24 August - 22 September):Learn how to cook.

Libra (23 September - 22 October):Sorry about the scale comment earlier. You guys are great.

Scorpio (23 October - 22 November):

Sagittarius (23 November - 20 December):What are your plans for the summer? Whatever they are, be it hanging around Montreal or going abroad somewhere, be sure to take as many selfies as possible.

Capri-Sun (22 December - 20 January):Dude, you’re like, the best juice. I used to be able to drink, like, 10 of you in one sitting.

Aquarius ( 21 January - 19 February) :You guys already know what I’m going to say ;)

Pisces:Guys, don’t tell Aquarius, but I really had no idea what to say. I hope they’re not mad. I added the winky face at the end to make it seem like we were in on some kind of inside joke, but really, I just got lazy.

Top 5 Montreal Vegan Restaurants

By: Arielle Supino

One of the common misconceptions about vegans is that they can’t eat at most restaurants due to a lack of available vegan foods. However, this does not necessarily have to be the case. First of all, vegans are generally experts in the art of finding things they can eat in nearly any restaurant, so that point fails. And, secondly, due to the decent amount of vegan restaurants we have here in Montreal, our vegan friends most definitely do not have to give up their favorite food items! Indeed, below is a list of five amazing vegan restaurants that anyone can enjoy and that people with dietary restrictions will surely appreciate!

1) Aux Vivres When I say they have everything, I mean it. Whether you want a burger, fries and a piece of cake, or a salad, some green juice and an energy ball, you’re all set at Aux Vivres. This restaurant makes their dishes

resemble regular non-vegan meals, so that you don’t feel like you’re compromising your favourite foods for healthier alternatives. They also offer many ethnic dishes, so that you can satisfy your Indian, Greek and Asian food cravings all in one take.

Side note; make sure to try their brunch (only offered on the weekends)! It is complete with vegan scrambled eggs, bacon, yoghurt, granola, and pancakes… TO DIE FOR!

2) Chu Chai Take the Chu Chai test. Bring along some unsuspecting non-vegan friends and see if they even realize that what they’re eating isn’t meat, chicken or seafood, but tofu, seitan and tempeh! This is quite possibly the best Asian food I’ve ever had. It’s packed with flavor, it’s diverse, and it will satisfy all of your Thai food cravings. They also offer gluten free options!

3) Crudessence Crudessence is a raw vegan restaurant that offers plenty of wholesome and organic foods that are bursting with nutrients! While you have to enjoy eating leafy greens and other vegetables in their natural, unprocessed form to be able to tolerate this place, it’s not hard to fall in love with their big salads, hearty soups, and raw chocolate dishes.

4) Panthère Verte While they offer delicious smoothies, veggie burgers, flavorful sweet potatoes and such, this place is all about the falafel. If you’re ever looking for a healthy vegan falafel fix, you now know that there is a place you can go!

Side note; their desserts are absolutely mouth-watering! The vegan tiramisu, carrot cake and big cookies are a few examples of what you can find lined up at the counter!

How to Live Longer

By Liam McMahon

For millennia, people have been trying to understand how the duration of a human life can be extended past its normal life expectancy and how that normal life expectancy can also become lengthened.

There are obviously different norms in regard to life expectancy within each country (due to health, economics, education and other factors), but what about countries at the top of the life expectancy chart, like Canada (82.5 years) or Japan (84.6 years)? How can these life expectancies, which are already some of the highest in the world, become longer? Is it possible for a human to live well into his or her 150s or 200s?

Although there are no definite methods of extending the duration of human life, scientists have made several discoveries that may hold the answer to this age-old problem.

Several different genetic research teams have come up with the same conclusion from their studies on different groups of people from different ethnic backgrounds in their 70s, 80s, 90s and 100s. The researchers concluded that all of these elderly men and women had a higher amount of a gene that has

been associated with longevity. This gene is called Forkhead Box O3 or FOXO3 for short. If this gene can be manipulated for medical use, then the aging population around the world will have a better chance of living over 100 years.

Another scientific innovation, which may seem ridiculous at first, is the use of hibernation tactics to slow down the aging process in humans. Once thought to be a distinct characteristic of animals, scientists have now found ways to use hibernation as a tool in medical procedures.

One of the main characteristics of hibernation is that the animal that is hibernating will cool down its body temperature in order to slow down its heart rate. Doctors are now cooling down their patients’ body temperatures during risky surgical operations in order slow down the body’s heart rate, making them less prone to injury during the operation. This method has been proven to save many lives. Scientists are now trying to figure out how the hibernation process can be applied further in human life in order to slow down the aging process on a much bigger scale.

One of the most promising innovations yet is tissue engineering. Scientists have already figured out how to construct living

human organs by extracting cells from the human body and then basically growing new body parts from the extracted cells. The process is by no means easy, but there have been many successful operations that have saved lives around the world. If organ scaffolding advances, which it most probably will, then humans will theoretically be able to replace damaged body parts like they replace damaged parts on/in cars, further extending the human lifespan beyond what most people can only imagine.

There are various other possible solutions to the long-life problem, but for the ones mentioned above it’s important to note that a healthy diet and a life-style filled with lots of exercise are essential to living a long life. You may have more of the FOXO3 gene than most people or you may attain new organs, but without exercise and proper dieting, your health won’t reap any of the benefits. And for everyone who finds these solutions too far out of their reach, a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle is the key to longevity.

Last Friday, the day that we look forward to all year finally arrived … and then, just like that, it was done. Characterized by much rain, wind and chillier than usual temperatures for this time of the year, Shourawe went by so quickly. Such a shame, but I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Even though we had a shortage of paint and an excess of rain, causing Shourawe itself to be cut short, this didn’t stop anyone from looking like a total mess of water, dirt and a myriad of house colours by the end of the morning. Despite the need to cut the event short, we witnessed some groundbreaking races and record-shattering relay times. Indeed, this year was fairly impressive, I might add. Evan Dimentberg came in first in the

Middle School Boys Bailey Run, and Laurence Troquet came in first in the Middle School Girls Race. In Senior School, Andrea Naday won the gold in the Girls

Bailey Run, and it probably comes as no surprise that Mikey Sananes came in first for the Senior School Boys. I know that many of you only care about which house actually won Shourawe, so I won’t delay any longer. Keep in

mind these are unofficial results as most houses had… um… misunderstandings, if I can put it that way. Anyways, this year’s Shourawe results are: Beveridge coming in third, Claxton bringing the silver home, and Woods with the overall win! Congratulations to everyone on your incredible energy and enthusiasm. Although Shourawe was rained out, it sure was fun.
