No, I am not talking about winter. I was referring to my term as Auxiliary President. What!?! Paula just reminded me that the term has a second year. Are you sure the hospital and Auxiliary could survive another year with me? At least, we know that we have a great team running Lowell General Hospital and an even greater team running the Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary. I would take this moment to sing praises of the Auxiliary board, gift shop staff and volunteers and all the Auxilians, but alas, my singing has been banned. Instead I offer this small piece of doggerel. At A Winter Affair, We partied without care. The snow and cold were frightful. Bourbon and wine flowed. Snowballs were thrown. A Winter AffairIn the middle of the snowiest winter in our region’s history, the Lowell General Hospital community gathered together and made the Auxiliary’s sixth annual A Winter Affair a wonderful success. This time around, it was the Vesper Country Club that provided the perfect setting for the elegant evening. The entire facility was decked out for the occasion with an array of beautiful floral arrangements donated by some of the area’s best and most loved florists.

One hundred and ten guests enjoyed an entertaining evening of fun, friends, and fabulous food.

One hundred and ten guests enjoyed an entertaining evening of fun, friends, and fabulous food. Upon arrival, attendees were treated to a champagne toast and entertained with jazz music performed by the talented Trude Witham Group. Guests were then encouraged to try their hand at a snowball toss competition, and greatly enjoyed wine and bourbon tastings arranged by Jimmy Young of Martignetti Companies and Jay Cahill of Harrington Wine and Liquors.

Back by popular demand was the much-loved wine pull that included a record number of festively-wrapped bottles of wine. This fun activity was made possible by the generosity of many local businesses and residents who collectively donated 125 bottles of wine with values ranging between $20 and $200 per bottle.

Guests feasted on a fabulous dinner that began with salad elegantly served in martini glasses, followed by a selection of pasta dishes and a ham carving station. Once again, Sodexo outdid themselves by providing an assortment of delicious desserts.

The wonderful live auction items included a wine dinner for two at Stonehedge Inn & Spa donated by Stonehedge, four bottles of Coppola Wines donated by Carrie Meikle & Trish O’Donnell, film reel wine rack and movies by Francis Ford Coppola donated by Jimmy Young, an LCD HDTV donated by MEC Technologies, and an in-home dinner for six donated by Two Chefs.

The night finished off with a raffle of those 11 fabulous floral arrangements. We would like to thank each and everyone of the talented donors: Blossoms Florist, Classic Flowers, Feeney the Florist, Floral Arts, Flowers by Albert, Flowers by Steve, Les Fleurs, Westford Florist, Piccirillo Designs, A Floral Moment by Juju Buds and Rose of Sharon at Blossom Hill. Their amazing creations were much appreciated by all guests and the fortunate winners.

Finally, we would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all who participated and attended the seventh annual Winter Affair. It’s because of you that we were able to raise $18,900 — all of which will directly benefit our local community hospital.

Lowell General Hospital Gift Shop News

Finally, spring is here! Temperatures are a little less frigid and the snow is slowly melting! Here at the Gift Shops we have just finished our annual inventory and are looking forward to a great year ahead! Many new spring items have arrived and our customers are eager to buy bright and lighter-weight clothing, spring and summer handbags and fun, seasonal jewelry and scarves.

Fashion continues to be the key word in buying for the shops, as is true in all gift shops today. Our clothing, jewelry, scarf and handbag lines are comparable to those you will see at the most popular mainstream gift shops. We strive to offer these items at prices equal to or less than our competition. Sales continue to improve at the Lowell General Hospital’s Saint’s Campus and Valerie Rivera, our full-time sales associate there also manages our Facebook page. Please “friend” us on Facebook and think of us when you have a special gift to buy!

Our new web page within the Lowell General Hospital website is nearing completion!

Our new web page within the Lowell General Hospital website is nearing completion and soon friends and family of our patients will be able to order items online! We hope that this helps us as we strive to present a professional, current image to our patients and customers.

Finally, we would like to thank all of the volunteers and shoppers who helped us make the 2014 Holiday Festival, which was held in November, the best one yet. The month of December in the shops was also record-breaking and we will have to work very hard this year to compete with last year’s sales figures!

Remember that the gift shops both offer complimentary valet parking and are truly a great way to shop and give back to the hospital at the same time!

Daffodils and Desserts

After this winter’s historic snowfall and lingering freezing temps, the annual “Daffodils and Desserts” held at the hospital’s main and Saints campuses on Thursday, March 26 from 9am – 4pm, was the assurance that spring had arrived in winter-weary New England.

Beautiful displays of potted daffodils and bouquets, floral arrangements, wreaths, Easter and Gift Baskets, along with sweets and treats to rival any bake shop were eagerly purchased by our many supporters, including patients, hospital staff, and visitors.

This year’s event raised a net profit of $5,500.

The Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary teamed with the American Cancer Society’s “Daffodil Days” for 18 years in its campaign to raise money in the fight against cancer. To sweeten the pot, the Auxiliary’s sale of donated baked goods was added to this annual fundraiser, with those proceeds directly benefiting Lowell General Hospital’s Cancer Center.

Although the American Cancer Society ended its 40-year tradition in 2013, the Auxiliary continues to support this great cause and for the second consecutive year, Lowell General Hospital’s Cancer Center is the beneficiary of all net proceeds. This year’s event raised a net profit of $5,500, raising total donations to date of nearly $30,000 for the hospital and Cancer Center.

Special thanks go to Committee Chair Pauline Lambert and Co-chairs Terry O’ Connor and Mary Bennett for their leadership and dedication to ensure the success of “Daffodils and Desserts”. Our thanks to all Board Members, Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary who volunteered their time and donated culinary confections. And finally, we were very fortunate to have assistance from Ray Leavitt who provided off-campus daffodil deliveries.
