Fairway: Low Rate Amicarbazone applications to control Poa annua in Bentgrass Researchers: Chicago District Golf Association ‐ Derek Settle and Tim Sibicky with Dan Dinelli Protocol: Developed by Dr. Bruce Branham and Bill Sharp, University of Illinois Sponsor: Arysta, Tim Murphy and Doug Houseworth Goal: Evaluate amicarbazone to selectively remove Poa annua from fairway creeping bentgrass. Location: Number 8 fairway, North Shore Country Club, Glenview, IL Background: A new herbicide with an active ingredient called amicarbazone was found to have an ability to control Poa annua. Amicarbazone DF has been the subject of extensive research by weed scientists beginning about 2008 and will be available as Xonerate in early 2012. Amicarbazone is a photosynthesis ll inhibitor. Research has allowed specific label instructions for superintendents who wish to use on bentgrass and avoid phytotoxicity and/or injury. In 2011 our test would investigate frequent low rates of amicarbazone to remove Poa annua.
Current label instructions that have been developed for bentgrass are extensive. 1) A greens recommendation will not be on the label in 2012; 2) The rate for bentgrass fairways will be kept to 1.0 oz/A with up to four applications at seven day intervals; 3) Apply Amicarbazone DF at air temperatures ranging from 50 to 80° F; 4) Do not apply Amicarbazone DF to creeping bentgrass fairways and roughs in the summer or early fall months; 5) Do not apply Amicarbazone DF to creeping bentgrass exhibiting stress; 6) Repeat applications should be made in a perpendicular direction to the previous application.
Material and Methods: North Shore Country Club is a private golf course located in Chicago’s north suburbia. The area is called ‘North Shore’ and North Shore Country Club is just 6 miles west of Lake Michigan. The location was number 8 fairway an established bentgrass/Poa par 3 fairway in play. A randomized split block design with 3 replications was used and each plot measured 4 ft x 6 ft. Applications were made in water equivalent to 2 gal/1000 ft2 using a CO2 backpack sprayer at 40 psi using TeeJet 8004EVS flat fan nozzles. Weekly data included information on Poa annua and dollar spot. Visual quality, on a scale of 1‐9 with 6 or greater acceptable, was taken to determine any plant health effects and to monitor phytotoxicity risk.
