What means “migration”?Migration is the unwanted transfer of components from ink, adhesive,varnish, substrate or the enviroment into the packaged goods.
Different types of migration:
Migration Issues in the past:
2004: Sensorial problem with advent calender; mineral oil from offset inks
2005: ITX in fruit juice, Baby milk (Nestlé); Photoinitiator from UV inks
2009: Benzophenone in cereals; Photoinitiator from UV inks
2010: Mineral oil from recycled board

European legislation does not specifically cover printing inks in their supplied form,there are some legislative instruments which impact on materials and articlesintended for indirect contact with food.
Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004:materials and articles in contact with food do not transfer their components tofood in quantities which could:- endanger human health OF COURSE!- affect the composition of the food- degradation in the organoleptic properties

Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended tocome into contact with food. Overall migration limit (OML) of 60 mg/kg foodor 10 mg/dm² of surface area. In addition specific migration limits (SML) ormaximum contents in the material are set for individual substances (50 ppb).
Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006, sets out rules on Good Manufacturing Practices for the production of food contact articles.

• Ink manufacturers have to develop specific low migration formulas

1.- All photoinitiators used in the CRB FDP UV inks listed on Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21
2.- Only raw materials not classified as toxic or highly toxic, mutagenic nor cancerous are used in CRB FDP UV inks according to the EuPiA Exclusion List for printing inks
