    machiner, Mesic looked at what the market was demanding,

    and established artnershis with secialist sliers to meet

    those demands. In articlar, it has investigated new materials and

    innovative technologies that enable it to oer soltions that are more

    One o Mesics most recent advances is the develoment o an

    end-o-line secondar and fnal ackaging soltion or acks o tea.

    This is a dedicated line which incororates transort o the acks,

    aggregating dierent rodct tes and ormats, and atomaticall

    lacing them in dierent acking cases.

    The ke isse is that the acks containing dierent avors o tea

    each coming rom a dierent rodction line mst be roerl

    and accratel laced into searate cases or desatch. So when

    the dierent teas arrive at the Mesic end-o-line lant, the are frst

    scanned b an Omron FQ vision sstem, which identifes the dierent

    rodct tes. The data is sent via an Ethernet link to the ick-and-

    lace sstem, which takes the acks o tea and ts them intodierent cases. The oen cases are frst marked with a Data Matrix

    code, and then atomaticall sealed: fnall, a second Omron FQ-CR

    vision sstem reads the code rinted on the case, to identi the

    contents and ensre accrate desatch.

    Develoed in collaboration with Omron, the end-o-line lant

    benefts rom the know-how and rodct hilosohies o both

    comanies. One o Mesics core strengths is its abilit to oer not

    onl standalone machines bt also comlete lines. These all-in-one

    sstems, born ot o the need to rn mltile rocesses within the

    same area, are designed in co-oeration with the cstomer to take

    into accont the secifc ackaging and the sace limitations. The

    Mesic machines make se o innovative materials sch as carbon

    fbre and have ewer moving arts. This makes them lighter, which in

    trn enables the se o smaller motors to redce comonent costs as

    well as saving energ to 60% comared with traditional machines.

    Mespic, with headquarters in northeast Italy, has worked with Omron to develop

    innovative all-in-one packaging solutions that end-users now demand, and that

    Mesic has ond an ideal artner in Omron, which shares its

    Leader at Omron Electronics Ital, exlains that Or atomation

    hilosoh was to rovide a soltion based on the new NJ controlleron an EtherCAT network. This architectre allows s to take a niqe

    aroach in meeting diering reqirements in terms o comlexit,

    while ensring cost saving. We achieved this becase the NJ machine

    controller - scaled in dierent sizes - handles the logic I/O as well as

    the machine movements. The EtherCAT network - on which the entire

    Ssmac latorm is based rovides the seed o data exchange

    necessar to ensre alication exibilit.

    In the case o the tea-ackaging soltion, the NJ501 machine

    controller manages the conveors carring the acks o tea, as well

    as servo drives that oerate the casing machine, the ick-and-lace

    modle, and the aggregation o the dierent acks. Mesics case-

    acking sstems are all to-loading, and se a Cartesian-axis gantr

    with both motors fxed, to redce weight and thereore wear - on

    the moving arts.

    Ssmac: One Machine

    Controller, One Connectionand One Sotware

    Fll integrated nder the simle concet o One Control, One

    Connection and One Sotware it met with instant sccess. It was

    Ssmacs simlicit and reliabilit that sers areciated most and,

    thanks to them, we are on target to achieve over 5000 Cpu sales. Last

    ear we also said that this was the frst ste in a ten ears jorne

    The frst release - NJ5 Cpu targeted 16, 32 and 64 axes machines.

    Within six months seed had been dobled and 64 axes control

    cold be achieved in 1 ms instead o 2 ms. We also released a

    new Cpu amil NJ3 line covering 4 and 8 axes with the same

    nctionalit, bt with slightl lowered erormance. The NJ3 Cpu is

    well ositioned to meet 80% o alications in terms o er ormance

    and cost.

    Kineaics ees PLC, in and visin

    In Jl we lanched the NJ Robotics line. This integrates motion,

    pLC, vision and the kinematic algorithms reqired or delta robots.

    Continos ick & lace sstems comrising 8 robots and a dal

    conveor line can now be controlled in less than 2ms ccle times,

    with to 200 icking ccles er minte.

    Ssmac latorm now incldes smart saet nction thanks to the

    new integrated saet soltion. The latter consists o a new saet

    network controller and a new saet I/O (NX I/O). One connection

    concet is realised throgh the se o Saet over Ethercat (FSoE)

    laer, controller and I/Os are hsicall monted on the distribted

    I/O rack. Hence sae and non sae I/Os can be mixed on the same I/O

    block.. The ONE sotware concet is achieved b sing Ssmac Stdio

    or confgration and rogramming. Needless to sa that it ll

    comlies with IEC-61131-3 standard. The saet controller achieves

    the highest saet and meets Categor 4 and perormance level (pLe)

    according to the ISO-13849-1 and SIL3 according to IEC-61508.

    Disibued NX I/o: sub-icsecnd accuacy

    Based on a backlane bs rnning in snchronos and asnchronos

    modes and sing time staming, or NX I/O distribted IO range can

    read an int or set an ott with sb-microsecond accrac. NX

    I/O is available with over 70 models o I/O nits. Frther models will

    become available over the coming ear.

    NJ-series controller, as the

    basis o a new generation

    o Machine Control

    Systems.

    Direct access to all variables and nctions or seqence control, motion control

    In modern machine control, achieving a high exection seed means nothing

    withot accrac and reeatabilit. using the distribted clock nction o the

    EtherCAT machine network, the timing o Ssmacs motion control is accrate and

    redictable to within a microsecond. The same deterministic behavior is now also

    sorted b the new Ssmac NX-series I/O sstem.

    Omron controllers and varios oen networks, et oering

    a new inter-connection bs, which oterorms an crrentl

    available indstrial network. Besides having a high data

    transer rate, this bs will roagate the distribted clock o

    EtherCAT down to individal I/O nits. The distribted clock

    allows an I/O nit to snchronise with the Ssmac machine

    controllers rimar task ccle with less than 1 s jitter.

    Additionall, int nits with timestam nction can be sed

    to accratel determine seqence o events with nanosecond

    resoltion.

    the recise timing o digital ott seqences, with the same

    nanosecond resoltion. used together, the total accrac

    The digital I/O nits in the Ssmac NX-series are oered

    in several variations, allowing the ser to make a trade-o

    between I/O densit and ease o installation, or erormance

    Standard digital I/O nits are available as 4-oint modles

    which accet direct connection o 3-wire signals, roviding

    24V ower sl to the sensor. These 4-oint nits are also

    available as high-seed. Standard-erormance nits also

    come in higher densities: 8-oint I/O nits can be sed or

    2-wire signals, ticall dr contact switches. 16-oint nits

    achieve the highest I/O densit in 12 mm width, in case the

    sensors are slied with ower rom an external sorce.

    Saet I/Os are available as 4-oint int nits, while saet

    otts nits have 4 ott oints in jst 12 mm width, or 2

    oints with a 2 A rating.

    A ll range o analog I/Os is available, rom two to eight

    signals er nit, or crrent, voltage, thermocole or RTD

    signals. High-erormance models are available, oering 10

    s conversion time er channel and 1:30000 resoltion. To

    sort the motion control nctions o the Ssmac series, I/O

    nits or encoder ints and lse otts are inclded in the

    range. These can be assigned to motion axes in the controller

    confgration.

    control and saet control are both rogrammed in Ssmac Stdio, roviding eas

    monitoring and reerencing o saet stats inormation in the normal control

    rograms.

    Design

    All Ssmac I/O nits have the same height and deth (100x71 mm) while the

    standard nit width is 12mm, or 24mm or some secifc nits. All I/O nits have

    a detachable ront connector with sh-in te screwless terminals. I/O wiring

    looms can be reared and installed searatel, signals can easil be disconnected

    or testing and commissioning, and nits can be relaced withot re-wiring.

    installation errors.

    At the initial market release in Q1 2013, the Ssmac NX-series I/O will consist o

    aroximatel 70 tes o I/O nits and sstem modles like ower eeds and

    The release o the Ssmac NJ Series Machine

    Atomation Controllers was a decisive ste

    The NX Saet Controller sorts sae logic in its local

    NX backlane and in remote NX remote backlanes

    Fnctional Saet Over EtherCAT (FSoE) ses the so-called

    black channel or commnications which allows saet

    data and non-saet data to be combined withot risk

    in a single network. FSoE can achieve SIL-3, with the

    Ssmac NJ Controller is the EtherCAT network master.

    The NX Saet Controller establishes a connection-ID

    mechanism with its associated NX devices. In this wa,

    the NX Saet Controller manages the sae logic while the

    NJ EtherCAT Master is resonsible or sae and non-sae

    commnications. One interesting conseqence is that

    NJ Controller has continos access to the FSoE data

    and can, i necessar, se this in standard atomation

    rocesses.
