Our wonderful hostWynne Evans

Born in south west Wales, Wynne studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio in London. Regularly singing to millions for the TV advertising campaign has made him a household name as the spoof opera star Gio Compario.

His debut album ‘A Song in My Heart’ went to number one in the classical charts. He is a regular presenter on BBC Radio Wales and Classic FM, and recently starred in his very own TV series on BBC One Wales, ‘Wynne At the Deep End’.

Wynne has been an opera singer for over 25 years, working at The Royal Opera House, Paris Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York throughout his career. He sang the role of PIANGI in the 25-year anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera, which was broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall to cinemas worldwide, and has been released on DVD. Wynne is also a valued Tenovus Cancer Care Patron, and we’d like to thank him for his continued support.

Welcome to ourLovelight ConcertThank you so much for joining us

Our Lovelight concerts are a key celebration at Tenovus Cancer Care and this year is no different. With all the uncertainty that this year’s pandemic has brought, it’s a more poignant time than ever to remember, and celebrate our loved ones affected by cancer.

We welcome you to this very special online event, and hope you enjoy the wonderful performances by our incredibly talented acts, who have all given their time for free.

Winning 24 caps for Wales at scrum half, Rupert Moon’s rugby career successfully spanned 17 years. Most famously, Rupert captained the iconic west Wales team Llanelli Scarlets during their unprecedented triple success season where they won the League and Cup, and beat then Rugby World Cup Champions Australia. Retiring from professional rugby in 2002, some might wonder where he could go from there, but Rupert’s broad and respected professional career in business consultancy, broadcasting and customer relations ever since speaks for itself.

In addition to his rugby and commercial success, Rupert is a highly respected TV and radio presenter who has professionally delivered major public events, and taught Mick Jagger to speak Welsh! He is active with numerous charities and is passionate in his role of Patron at both Tenovus Cancer Care and the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.

We would like to thank Rupert for his support at our North Wales Lovelight concerts since 2014, and we are delighted he can join us this evening.

Pendyrus Male Choir was formed in 1924 in Tylorstown in the Rhondda Fach, and has had an unbroken history ever since. There had been various male choirs in the village since the 1870s when it had come into existence around the mineshafts sunk by the industrialist Alfred Tylor, but they lapsed during the First World War.

Though the 1920s were years overshadowed by mass unemployment in the coalfield, undaunted a handful of young men from the locality decided to contact friends and former work mates with a view to forming a male choir. They approached a local baker and amateur musician called Arthur Duggan who accepted their invitation to conduct, and Pendyrus was formally inaugurated in a hut belonging to the South Wales Miners’ Federation on May the 24th 1924. Subsequent Musical Directors have been the legendary Glynne Jones (1962-2000), John Samuel (2001-2009), and Stewart Roberts (2009-2019), all of whom have benefited from the services of the highly accomplished Gavin Parry, the choir’s accompanist since 1973.

Today the choir has well over 80 members and has sung around the world to great acclaim. It has toured in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and many European countries including the Baltic States; it is the only Welsh male choir to have been invited to both the Kremlin and the White House whilst on tour. In August 2017 it visited Poland. In addition to foregrounding local school choirs, its annual concert has featured such stars as Rebecca Evans, Katherine Jenkins, Shân Cothi, John Owen Jones, Gwawr Edwards, Lesley Garrett, Rhydian Roberts, Rhys Meirion, Aled Wyn Davies and Paul Potts.

2019 saw Pendyrus return to competition, participating in both the Cardigan’s Semi National Eisteddfod, where they won for the fifth time, and the National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst where they were highly placed among the fifteen competing choirs. They now look forward to a bright future under their new musical director Ieuan Jones.

Sing with Us Choir

Our Sing with Us choirs have been supporting people affected by cancer for 10 years, by bringing people together to sing, make friends and support one another. Tenovus Cancer Care have done a lot of research into the positive benefits of singing, and found that it not only improves mental health and wellbeing, but can also lower inflammation in the body and improve our immunity as well.

Before the pandemic, our choirs met weekly to rehearse and also performed regularly in their communities. The lockdown restrictions of 2020 meant that, like so many groups, they had to find ways new ways to work.

Since March, choir leads Paul and Jo have been rehearsing with the Sing with Us choirs online, and despite the challenges posed by time lag, technology and not being able to hear each other, they’ve had loads of fun and have been able to continue supporting people at what could have been a very lonely time.

The choirs have all joined together in this time so our virtual choir is UK wide! It’s been great seeing new friendships formed that would usually be limited by distance. The choirs have learnt lots of new songs and even gained the confidence to record themselves, so that we could put together virtual performances for others to enjoy.

Usually, there would be many Lovelight concerts taking place all over Wales, which our choirs look forward to with anticipation all year round. We are so glad that despite the many challenges 2020 has brought, we are still able to perform at this very special concert, and we love that our friends from all over the UK can join us!

The Rhos Orpheus Male Choir was initially formed to compete at the Llangollen Eisteddfod in 1957. Since then, the choir has concentrated on concert performances both here in the UK and has also visited Ireland, the USA and Canada, Hong Kong, China, Cyprus and for over 40 years to sing with choirs in Germany.

The choir has an extensive range of recordings and an album of Christmas Carols featuring the Orpheus reached No 9 in the Classic FM Album Chart.

The Musical Director and Conductor of the Orpheus, Eifi on Wyn Jones, recently celebrated a 60 year association with the choir. He continues to reaff irm the choirs’ reputation as one of the fi nest male voice choirs in Wales.

Their repertoire ranges from traditional Welsh pieces, opera choruses as well as music from stage and screen. The choir is proud of its long history of supporting charities including the RNLI, the British Heart Foundation and of course – Tenovus Cancer Care.

Fairholme Prep School

Fairholme Prep School, St Asaph, provides an outstanding education for boys and girls from the ages of 3 to 11. It has a long tradition of music and drama, enriching the lives of the children and contributing to local community events. The School is proud to have sung in every Lovelight Concert held in St Asaph Cathedral since 2014 and is now looking forward to being part of the fi rst virtual Lovelight concert.

This year, instead of singing as a whole school choir, the children will be singing in small groups. They hope to bring their own brand of Christmas enthusiasm to the occasion, and to play their part in supporting this wonderful event which brings joy to so many.

Howells School, Llandaff

Howell’s School, Llandaff was founded in 1860 by the Drapers’ Company as a result of a bequest made in 1536 by Thomas Howell. It provides an all-round education for girls between the ages of 3 and 16, and in the Howell’s College for male and female students between the ages of 16 and 18.

Music plays a very important part in the life of the Prep School. The girls enjoy taking part in choirs, ensembles, bands and orchestras as well as in a range of musical productions. Over the years, Howell’s Prep School has delighted audiences in the Wales Millennium Centre, supporting celebrities including Hayley Westenra and Lesley Garrett and last year, one of the Prep School choirs gained a place in the final of the Barnardo’s Young Choir of the Year, travelling to London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall. Girls have also taken part in a combined Junior Schools’ Choir at St David’s Hall, supporting the African Children’s Choir on one of their visits to Wales and have joined a massed children’s choir, performing alongside the BBC National Chorus and Orchestra of Wales at their annual Carol Concert.

Always willing to use their musical talents to help others, the girls have raised funds to support local charities and annually perform for the children of Tŷ Gwyn School and at the Children’s Hospital for Wales.

Howells School are honoured to have once again been invited to perform at the Lovelight Christmas Concert. This year has been, and still is, very different for all a the school and their items consist of a mix of music recorded at home during ‘lockdown’ and recorded more recently, in a socially distanced way.

Lovelight poems written and read by: Jasmine, Isabelle, Verity, Kiana, Georgia and Erin, all from Year 6.

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, but especially those who have or suspect they may have cancer.

Lockdown means people have stayed away from the NHS. Since March we estimate 25,000 fewer people had cancer tests than expected. This has led to 2,500 undiagnosed cancers in Wales as a result of COVID-19. With cancer referrals not back to pre-pandemic levels, the number of undiagnosed cancers will continue to rise month-on-month.

At Tenovus Cancer Care, we offer advice and support to those affected by cancer in communities across Wales and beyond. Whether you’re celebrating at this time of year or not, you can still show you care about cancer this holiday season. There are so many ways you can help: including fundraising for us, attending one of our festive online events, buying our Christmas cards, becoming a regular giver or supporting us in another way. There are so many ways you can help us help those living with cancer.

White Christmas

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know,

Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, with every Christmas card I write.

May your days be merry and bright, And may all your Christmases be white.
