Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you…” and when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (Jn. 20:21-22)

Today the word peace has been an obsolete term not just in the context of two rival countries but also within most of our own families. Relationships are really hard to be maintained in today’s context. It’s really hard to blame merely the present generation and its life style. Serious flaws have occurred from the parenting also that has led to this rupture within the families. Despite all this, each one of us is on our pursuit for this peace and happiness behind positions, money and all the worldly pleasures in limbo.

Paulo Coelho’s Alchemist comes up with a simple solution to this dilemma in his story of the two drops of oil. “The Secret of Happiness lies in looking at all the wonders of the world and never forgetting the two drops of oil in the spoon.” Yes, the peace and happiness, we all are in pursuit of, are within our own families. Just that

as the world changes its life style one should never forget the quintessential aspects of a family - it is each family member. Relationships with intent commitment and proper understanding are the ingredients that create the magic that make the real difference toward improving the rapport between youth and their families.

As we approach a new academic year a new beginning in our busy metro life let us not forget this simple yet exquisite message from the Alchemist- The secret of Happiness lies in looking at the wonders of the world without forgetting the two drops of oil in the spoon.

These two drops of oil may differ for each one of us. It’s time we sit back for a moment and think about the same. Let our pursuit not be in vain. Let the peace and glory of the risen Jesus and the love and fellowship of the Holy Spirit abide in us all.

Fr. Varghese payapilly was born on the 8th of August, 1876 as the fourth child of Lonan and Kunjumariam Payapilly-palackappilly at Konthuruthy, near Thevara, in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam. He was born and brought up in a good catholic family at perumanoor. The theological virtues he received at baptism were nourished at home by devout parents. He was faithful to frequent participation in the holy Eucharistic celebration and to receive the sacraments. Even from his childhood he felt the divine call to give himself totally to the Lord. Very willingly and courageously he gave his “YES” to the Lord. While studying in the 9th

class he joined the seminary at Alangad, near north Paravoor. Varghese received the best priestly formation, under the Jesuits in Kandy. He felt an inner deep inner urge to give himself totally to the Lord in the service of the poor and the abandoned. The deep sense of compassion and sympathy that he felt for the poor and the needy began to find expressions in concrete acts of charity and love. He cultivated the good qualities such as punctuality, gentleness, humility, compassionate love etc. the expression of his deep interiority and the quest for perfection. Right from the time of his formation he was always docile to his legitimate ecclesiastical authorities and he loved them sincerely.

He was ordained as a priest on 21st December, 1907. He radiated the joy of mystical union with Christ. He was a solace to those who were afflicted in body, mind and spirit.

Fr. Varghese was inspired by the Holy Spirit to start a religious congregation that would partake in continuing the salvific mission of Christ by serving the poor, the destitute, the aged and the invalid, forsaken by their dear ones in their own homes or driven away to the street. The compassionate love of Christ urged him to found the Congregation of the Sisters of the Destitute. Till 19th century there was no established form of charitable organizations in Kerala to take care of the poor and the destitute. “As you did it to one of the least of these, who are members of my family, you did it to me”(Mt. 25:40). This word of God gave him the insight to be committed for the poor. As a shelter for the destitute and the abandoned, a ‘Home for the aged’ was established on 8th September 1926. The congregation Sisters of the Destitute was officially started on 19th March 1927. On 9 September he fell ill. He breathed his last on 5th October 1929. He was declared as servant of God on 25th August 2009 and as venerable on 14th April 2018. Process of canonization still continues.

a combat at home? The attitude towards the youth should be positive and optimistic. Most of the parents give primary importance for their children’s physical and intellectual growth. In the bargain, they fail to understand the psychological, moral and spiritual needs of the youth. Let us analyse the situation in the background of a case vignette.

Charles* and Andrea* got into a relationship. Both are Syrian Catholics, attended rigorous catechism training and other faith formation like retreats and prayer services. For Charles, the relationship is casual, but for Andrea, boy-girl relationships must lead to marriage and family life. Andrea though initially reluctant gave in to a physical relationship with Charles. However, he got bored, left her and found another girl. In this case, it is clear that a fake relationship was framed

just to satisfy lust. Didn’t their conscious prick them? or did they avoid listening to their inner voice? Why did they disobey the 6th commandment without any hesitation? These are very common situations that

we face in society today. It shows parents have a major responsibility in the moral and

spiritual formation of youth. Irrespective of sound catechism classes unless they are supported and encouraged by parents no morality and spirituality will last long. As Pope Francis rightly said, “When you lose the sense of sin, you lose the sense of the Kingdom of God – you begin to think “I can

do anything.”

You might have observed youth with solid character

and when you get to know their family, you will find responsible parents who respect their children and give them a good formation. There are exceptional Catholic youth who are faithful to moral and spiritual norms. When Catherine* got admission for higher studies in a University in London her parents were not hesitant to send her abroad as they were confident that they had given sufficient formation to their daughter. The University situation was challenging in terms of being faithful to the commandments of God. She says, ‘My parents were not strict, nor did they allow me to live as I liked. They gave me responsible freedom. Today I understand what it means. It helped me to make right decisions at every step. I could lead a life of purity and sincerity irrespective of the challenges in campus life”. Each of us, the parents should be confident about

What are the prerequisites to be a ‘spiritually responsible parent’ for the

youth? The ground rule is, ‘Listen, listen, listen...’ It leads to ‘quality communication’, while spending quality time with the youth and listening to their feelings and sensing their emotions. Family rituals such as going for Holy Mass, regular family prayer, yearly family retreat, occasional family prayer services and Sunday reflection on moral and religious norms in the family circle, visiting pilgrim places and several such family get-togethers need to be promoted. Youth talk less but observe more. Parents who lead an exemplary moral and spiritual life require no advice for their children. Each parent should decide that he or she should be the first and last role model for their child.

There are parents who are over involved. When there are only one or two children even at teenage or youth they will be heavily dependent on parents. When there are more than three children, they will help one another and parents can reduce the level of dependency on them. Over involvement is harmful and yet, disengagement or neglecting children and excess freedom can lead to unwanted

behaviour. Virtue stands in the middle. Therefore give them responsible freedom and be a role model for the children.

Value the opinions and ideas of the youth. They are energetic and straight forward. Appreciate their integrity and support them to achieve their goals. Here are some practical tips:

1. Accept the youth as they are and encourage their creativity and genuineness

2. Listen to them and spend quality time with them

3. Be ready to discuss any matters of discontent

4. Balance between over involvement and extreme neglect

5. Spirituality cannot be given through advice but by actions

6. Teach them effective problem solving skills to stay away from all negative habits

7. Consider their opinion and allow them to make their own decisions

Thus, the Youth in the family, if streamlined, can effectively rebuild their lives and strengthen their spirituality on the march towards the kingdom of God.

Can the Church err in questions of faith?The faithful as a whole cannot err in faith, because Jesus promised his disciples that he would send them the Spirit of truth and keep them in the truth (Jn 14:17). What is the right way to read the Bible?The right way to read Sacred Scripture is to read it prayerfully, in other words, with the help of the Holy Spirit, under whose influence it came into being. It is God’s Word and contains God’s essential communication to us. The BIBLE is like a long letter written by God to each one of us. For this reason I should accept the Sacred Scriptures with great love and reverence. First of all, it is important really to read God’s letter, in other words, not

to pick out details while paying no attention to the whole message. Then I must interpret the whole message with a view to its heart

and mystery: Jesus Christ, of whom the whole

Bible speaks, even the Old Testament. Therefore I should

read the Sacred Scriptures in the faith that gave rise to them, the same living faith of the Church. How can we respond to God when he speaks to us?To respond to God means to believe him. Anyone who wants to believe needs a heart that is ready to listen. In many ways God seeks contact with us. In every human encounter, in every moving experience of nature, in every apparent coincidence, in every challenge, every suffering, there is a hidden message from God to us.He speaks even more clearly to us when he turns to us in his Word or in the voice of our conscience. He addresses us as friends. Therefore we, too, should respond as friends and believe him, trust him completely, learn to understand him better and better, and accept his will without reservation.

Summer vacations are always a great deal for us. After spending so many months

studying, and doing our daily assignments, this is the only time we get to relax. The time of excitement and happiness starts here. People spend their time travelling, visiting new places, playing different games and so on. Being an undergraduate student, it is mandatory that we apply for an internship. Contemplating on where to do my internship, I decided to opt for social service. Hence, I spoke to Sr. Alice Maria, one of my close relatives, who is a nun of the Sacred Heart Congregation which runs a home for the aged, S.H Bhavan in Anekal,

Atheena Louisa HerbertBangalore. She was really happy and asked me to come there and work for ten days with them.

There were nearly six of them in that house, four ladies and two men. I went to different people and interacted with them. We spoke about many things like family, friends, childhood experiences and many more. They were amazed by the fact that I, a young girl, had come to meet them and spend time with them.

this place will always remain in my heart. I still remember my first day in this place when I met Amala Mary, a 94 year old charming old lady. She constantly addressed me as her grand-daughter and told the same to others. She tried talking to me in both, English and Tamil. The sisters of the house asked me to write down everything that I wanted to ask her. I wrote sentences

in capital letters to which she a n s w e r e d delightfully in whatever broken English she knew. I still remember the way she said, “I’m Amala Mary and I love chocolates.”

After meeting Amala Mary, I met a wonderful brother and sister. They were John and Sarah. I was totally amused seeing their love and affection towards each other. John and Sarah were very excited after meeting me. Sarah is fifteen years older than her brother. She has difficulties in walking and hearing. They share a very special bond. John takes care of his sister wherever he goes holding her hands in his hands tightly. They are always in their own world constantly sharing their joys, sorrows and laughter.

Next, I met another interesting person named Violet. Her name attracted me a lot and I told Sr. Alice Maria that I would be definitely meeting her. During the initial days I was really scared as to how she would react if I talked to her. After initiating a casual conversation with her she invited me to her room. Here, she showed me many photographs of her fond childhood memories. Compared to the others she is the youngest who stays in the house. She took me through a journey of how she lived from childhood till date. The one line that touched me as she told about her life was that “I lost everything in my life my family, friends but I never lost my faith in God; it is because of him I live even today.”

I really enjoyed these ten days. Apart from interacting with them I also helped them in the best way possible. The sisters of the house were very welcoming and cooperative. They were ready to help me at any time and never hesitated. Often, in the afternoon they took me to their garden

and showed me what they had planted and I tried my hand at gardening. Surely, I will miss this place and being around the beautiful people I interacted with because it has left a footprint in my life which will last forever.

The youth of today in our church are learning more values and virtues and more about how to imbibe and use them in their daily lives. This internship has largely helped me towards my holistic development. From elderly people we learn a lot more about faith , society and the world beyond it. This shall definitely help me as I step into a new year of study.

Why does the Church celebrate the liturgy so often?

The people of Israel interrupted their work “seven times a day” (Ps 119:164) in order to praise God. Jesus participated in the liturgy and prayer of his people; he taught his disciples to pray and gathered them in the Upper Room so as to celebrate with them the liturgy of all liturgies: the gift of himself in the Last Supper. The church, which calls us to the liturgy, obeys his command, “Do this in remembrance of me.” (1 Cor 11:24b). Just as a man breathes air in order to stay alive, so too the church lives and breathes by celebrating the liturgy. God himself is the one who breathes new life into her day by day and enriches her with gifts through his Word and his 'sacraments.' We can use another image, too: every liturgy is like a rendezvous of love that God writes on our calendar. Anyone who has already experienced God’s love is glad to go to church.

Someone who from time to time feels nothing and goes nevertheless shows God his faithfulness.

Why does the liturgy have priority in the life of the Church and of the individual?

“The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows.” (Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum concilium 10). During Jesus’ Lifetime, multitudes of people flocked to him, because they were seeking his healing presence. Even today we can find him, for he Lives in his Church. He assures us of his presence in two places: in service to the poor (Mt 25:40) and in the Eucharist. There we run directly into his arms. And when we Let him get close to us, he teaches us, feeds us, transforms us, heals us, and becomes one with us in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The academic year began with the orientation program for the Catechism staff on 20th May. The input session for the staff from Fr. Jibson Edapulavan made it very interesting as he stressed on the significance of Catechism and the role of Catechism Teachers in the Church. All the teachers were delighted by the session and felt the session was too short. The orientation wrapped with general instructions being provided to the teachers. This year we have nearly 26 new staff who have joined this wonderful family. We do have a very young dynamic, vibrant and strong, Catechism Director, Fr. Thomas Thadathil CMI and Assistant Director, Fr. Tom Kunnumpurath

CMI respectively. Also we do have two new Vice Principals, Mrs. Reji Hansel for the HS section, Mr. Fredin CP for the UP section and Mr. Reji Joseph continuing as the Vice Principal of LP Section.

Deepak Sebastian a parishioner of our Forane Church, a native of Kottayam and settled here in Bangalore having his industry an entrepreneur, last week was awarded

the Prestigious National DRDO (Defence Research Developmental organisation) award by the Hon. Defense Minister SMT. Nirmala Sitharaman at the DRDO Bhavan New Delhi for indigenisation of critical items for Aerospace and Defense sector.

bagged the awards for Logoz Quiz, we were the runners up for the Scholarship Exams and Students Bible Quiz. We thank all the teachers and students who took efforts, and this has made us proud.

After 2 months of vacation, the Sunday School began on 3rd June with the inauguration in the Main Hall at 9:00 AM. Fr. Cyriac Madathil CMI our Vicar gave the inaugural address. Fr. Vicar then announced the names of the Sunday School Leaders namely Jeffin and Brijit and handed over the academic diary to them. The Sunday school leaders then recited the Catechism Pledge. Fr. Vicar along with our chief guest Advocate George Joseph gave away the academic awards. Our Director Fr. Thomas Thadathil CMI, officially inaugurated the CML activities for the year 2018 by handing over the badges to the CML student representatives who are: Jerix and Aparna. The CML Flag was handed over to the CML co-ordinator Mrs. Shiny Gilbert. The students recited the CML pledge and the Anthem.

The students who attended the Catechism without taking any leave were awarded by our Director and Mr. Biju George, our PTA President.

Post that Fr. Director provided a few General Instructions to the students which were very important for the smooth functioning of the Catechism. The respective class teachers were introduced to the students.

The inauguration concluded with the Papal Anthem. The students then moved to the church to participate in the Holy Eucharist.
