Act I (Scene 1)

(Act I begins with a low lit stage. A worndown game show set should be present. Itshould look like it hasn t been used inquite a few years.)

(Marvin Enters SL, Comes Center. Spotlightup on h im)

Marvin: Hello everyone. I guess you havealready noticed this lovely set behind me.This set held a mystery that was by far mytoughest case.

(Walks over toward the set, turns a stoolup, and sits down)

Yes, Cheryl Price had one of the longestrunning dating games in the history ofthis studio.

However, like they say “All good thingsmust come to an end....” ( Pauses)

(Gets up and walk DL)

I guess you’re all wondering how, why, and

when. Well, I’ll not only tell you, I’llshow you. Follow me as we go back about 7years.

(Wild Music should begin playing, as thecast begins putting the set back together.Marvin continues talking overtop ofeverything.)

The time is 1985; we are at Studio 6 onWashington Blvd. It is mid-season 6 for“Til’ Death Do Us Part,” and we arepreparing for the taping of a new episode.

(As lights fade on Marvin, the set shouldbe reset and the cast should paceimpatiently waiting on Cheryl.)

(Mark, still pacing, begins to slowly walktoward his seat. He sits, Producers putsome make-up on him. As they walk away, hebegins thinking about the show)

Mark: ( Talking To Himself) What am I goingto say about everything? I mean I’m such aboring guy.

(Pauses)

Oh no, what if she asks me about my past.I can’t tell her about me being put in

jail. Who wants to date an ex-convict? Imean, I never did that. I lost everythingover that woman. Sheww, I know, I will

play the little innocent, shy, boy. Thatway no one will ever ask me about thatpast of mine.

(Cheryl enters from Upstage Right. Shewalks over toward mark.)

But, What if she asks me about… No, shewould never ask me about…

(Cheryl taps him on the shoulder.)

(Mark startled let„s out an obnoxiousyelp)

WOW, sorry about that Miss

(Cheryl Interrupts)

Cheryl: Price. That’s the name CherylPrice, and you are?

Mark: Mark would be my name, Mark Sellars

Cheryl: (Under her breath) Mark, what acliché name.

(Looks at Mark, who is still standing)

Won’ t you sit down?

Mark: Absolutely

(A Voice Off-stage will sound)

Voice: 10 til’ places

(Mark and Cheryl will continue talking.Coffee should be brought out to Cheryl)

Cheryl: So Mark, tell me about yourself.

What do you like to do for fun?

Mark: Ummm… Well… I… Uhhh…

(Cheryl bursts out)

Cheryl: WHO PUT SUGAR IN MY COFFEE? INEVER DRINK MY COFFEE WITH SUGAR IN IT.

(Random Producer should bring her a freshcup)

It’s about time. Now make like a bananaand split.

(Takes a drink)

Now, back to you honey.

Mark: (Staring almost as if he were in atrance… Cheryl snaps her fingers . )

Were you talking to me?

Cheryl: No, I was talking to that wall.

Mark: Oh okay.

Cheryl: OF COURSE I WAS TALKING TO YOU!

Mark: Well then, I like to take walks, I

like to sin g, I love Bugs Bunny, I love…

Cheryl: No, No, No, I meant in a girl…

Mark: Well I like a real charming lady. Ilike someone who is honest.

Cheryl: Funny YOU should say that.

Mark: What do you mean? I don’t know whatyou’re talking about!

(Cheryl looks at him, and then walks overto chat with a producer)

Oh no, she knows about my prison sentence.I mean I didn’t mean to do it. I honestlydidn’t

(Voice offstage overlaps him)

Voice: PLACES!!!!

(Sarah, Baby, and Darby enter from SR.They all make their way to the couch.)

Sarah: (Hiccups) I cannot wait to meetthis boy. All my life I’ve wanted to havea boy to call my own.

(Passes out on the couch)

Lina: Is she going to be alright? I meanshe doesn’t look like she’s at her “best.”

Darby: Yes, she’s just, well a li ttle bitintoxicated.

Lina: Oh… Well I just wanted to make sure

(Show theme song will begin playing. Sarahabruptly sits up and begins bopping to themusic.)

(As theme song ends Cheryl takes her placeCenter stage)

Cheryl: (Using a totally different personality) Hello everyone, and welcome

Today, I have with us Mark Sellars, asingle bachelor who hopes to soon find alady that will keep him “young”

(Winks at audience)

Now, before we begin, let’s get a fewwords from our sponsors, and while we takea commercial break, why don’t you enjoy anice and healthy salad.

Cheryl: Hi and welcome back, we hope youenjoyed your salad. I know I enjoyed mine.

(Begins walking toward Mark)

Now let’s sit down and talk here with alovely bachelor Mark.

Hi Mark.

Mark: Hi Cheryl. I’m a little nervous.

Cheryl: Why would you be nervous? A hothunk of man like yourself.

Mark: Well, I mean I just… Did you sayHunk?

Cheryl: Woah… remember, I’m not one of theladies up for “selection” (Giggles)

Mark: Right… well Cher yl, I did come herelooking for a ( with emphasis) SOUL-MATE.

Cheryl: Well, then how about we meet our

ladies.Contestant number 1 is a lovely lady. Sheis a single mother of 2 kids and lives in

the Misty Meadows Trailer Park.

Everyone, help me welcome contestantnumber 1

(Sound Effects: Clapping)

Contestant 1 (Sarah): Hi Cheryl, I likeeggs…

(Awkward Silence)

Cheryl: Okay, now moving on… Our nextcontestant is Contestant number 2. Thebest way to describe her is, well I can’texplain it right now, and this is a familyoriented show.

Let’s meet her, everyone Contestant number2

(Sound Effects: Clapping)

Contestant 2 (Baby): (Seductively) HiCheryl, Hi Mark. How are you hot stuff?

(Mark interrupts)

Mark: Is it okay that Contestant 2 isgiving me the heebie jeebies?

Cheryl: Absolutely, but realize thateveryone deserves a fair chance. Unless ofcourse your husband is a worthlesswannabe, (Anger should build) who leavesyou at home to sit alone at night while hegoes out and drinks with lord knows who.It just makes me…

(Realizes she s ranting)

Ohh… Excuse me. I sometimes get off on mylittle tantrums when I think about thatlousy ex- husband of mine. Doug, if you’rewatching, I hate you!

Mark: Sorry, not to sound rude oranything, but aren’t we here to make me amatch… Not you!

So, would it be possible to make me, wella match?

Cheryl: Well, we’re a little hasty aren’twe? Well firs t off, I’ll decide when we dothings here. Not you, or ( Points ataudience members) Him, her, or even her.Only I decide these things!

( Stands up, and knocks coffee cup outMark s hand)

Okay, now that we have settled that littleordeal, I think we better take a breakwhile a janitor cleans up this mess. Seeyou in a second!

(Doug will enter SR, Cheryl will startwalking and accidentally bumps into hiscart.)

Cheryl: Sorr… Wait, Doug? Wh at are youdoing here?

Doug: I work here. Thanks to you, I lostmy job.

Cheryl: Well I hope you didn’t expectDaddy to let you keep your job after theway you treated me.

Doug: I never did anything… It was yourfault and you know it

Cheryl: I don’t hav e time for this, I haveto go fix my makeup.

(Cheryl continues walking)

Doug: You always were too caught up in

your looks, but like they say “Beauty isskin deep.”

(Cheryl stops and turns toward Doug)

Cheryl: What’s that supposed to mean?

Doug: If you don’t know by now, you won’tever figure it out.

Cheryl: Whatever!

(She exits SR)

Doug: (Toward the audience) She says thatnow, but her day will come. She can’t staystrong forever.

(Creepy laugh)

(He cleans the mess, and then exits offSL)

Voice: PLACES!

(The cast take their seats)

Cheryl: Okay, we’re back once again. Ican’t wait. Now, the question and answersession, where Mark gets questions andfind out the answers. So Mark, are you

take another break, but we will returnsoon with all the questions you wish tohear.

(Cheryl gets up and goes to fix hermakeup.)

(Doug enters SL)

Cheryl: No one rang for you.

Mark: Actually I did, I need some tissues,and my nose was itching.

Cheryl: Fine! Do your job, and please begone. It’s bad enough I have to work withyou here.

Mark: Thank you Doug, we men have to sticktogether.

Doug: I stick with no one!

(Doug leaves SR)

Cheryl: Sorry about him, he doesn’t havemany manners.

Mark: Eh. It’s cool. I’m used to it. It’snot usual people take kindly toward me. Ijust get used to it.

Cheryl: Yeah, well maybe.

(Voices overlap)

Voice: PLACES!!!

(Cheryl sits down and smiles at Mark.)

Cheryl: Welcome back folks, here we arefor the next part of our questioning.

Mark it’s all on you now.

Mark: Contestant Number 2

(There is no response from contestant 2)

Mark: Contestant 2?

(Contestant 3 nudges Contestant 2, shefalls face first on the floor, and it isseen that an arrow is in her back.)

Contestant 3: She’s DEAD!!!

(All Freeze)

(At this time, the Spaghetti dinner willbe served.)

(Cast Exits)

Act II (Scene 1)

(Lights up on stage)

(Cheryl is pacing back and forth, Mark issitting in his seat shaking and drinking acup of coffee. The contestants are sittingon the couch, and the body still lay inthe floor)

Cheryl: I wish that detective would gethere, I’m getting sick to my stomach fromlooking at that body.

Mark: You? I was talking to it!

(Cheryl gives Mark a very disgruntledlook)

Contestant 3: All I know is that this wasobviously not accidental.

Contestant 1: I see dead people

Contestant 3: Would you shut up! You havedone nothing but make yourself look likean idiot.

Contestant 1: Oh yeah?

Ms. Price, you can’t hide the evidence!

But before we go any further, could we getsomeone out here to get rid of thesewonderful “contestants!”

(Doug enters with a stretcher, he puts thebodies on it.)

Doug: I knew this place was going to havesomething happen to it. I just knew it.

Cheryl: Oh yes Doug, you always knowEVERYTHING!

Marvin: Ms. Price, do you know this man?

Cheryl: Yes, unfortunately for me, he’s myex-husband.

Contestant 3: (Sarcastically) Unfortunatefor you?

Marvin: More like unfortunate for ourcontestants. My sweet tooth is killing me,and I can’t do anything without somethingsweet. So while we find some candy, whydon’t you all enjoy some lovely dessert.

Act II (Scene 2)

Marvin: Okay, so during our break not onlydid I get some clues, I also got some downright good Pound Cake.

Now, I have learned that Contestant 3 hasan anger issue, and that it was set offearlier this evening.

I also learned that Doug the janitor isn’ttoo fond of Cheryl his ex-wife and viceversus.

I learned that Contestant 1 is a drunk,and needs therapy horribly!

But what I didn’t learn is

1. Why they were killed

2. Which one did it

And

3. Well I don’t have one, but you get thepicture.

But, I feel as though something stillisn’t right.

Well I guess we’ll just figure it out soonenough.

Cheryl: Soon enough? Excuse, but someonewas just murdered here, and you’re saying“Soon enough.”

(She Sits)

Contestant 3: Why are you so worried? Imean from the way it’s looking, you justmight be the killer.

Marvin: Can it you two. For all we knowyou both could be the killers.

I’m going to go make a phone call to mystation. No one leave this area, exceptDoug. Take those bodies and put themsomewhere cool.

(Marvin exits off SR; Doug exits SL)

Cheryl: Out of all the detectives in theworld, why did we luck out and get him?

Contestant 1: (Waking up) Hi everyone, I’myour Miss America!

(Takes a drink of something in a cup)

(It then looks almost like she goes into acomplete trance.)

(Cheryl snaps at her)

Cheryl: Is she okay?

Contestant 3: Yeah, she’s fine, justpassed out again. See…

(Nudges her, Contestant 1 falls over)

Contestant 3: Oh know, she’s dead!

(Long Pause)

(Next line should be under her breath…)

Eh… I won’ t miss her.

Cheryl: What was that? What did you say?

Contestant 3: (Nervously) I said umm… I’mgoing to really miss her.

Cheryl: (Sarcastically) That’s what Ithought you said…

(Marvin re-enters from SR)

Marvin: Okay I called the station and

they…

(Notices the body)

HOLY MACARONI! What happened to her?

Cheryl: Well, I’m going to take a stab atit and… Wait we’ve had enough stabbing, Ithink I had better just say it… she wasMURDERED!!!

(All GASP!)

Marvin: Okay, well it’s obvious that shewas murdered, but I want to know how.

(He begins walking around the body, and he picks up a cup.)

She was poisoned!

ALL CAST: GASP, POISONED!

Marvin: (He shows them the cup) Her drinkwas a little bit tainted.

Contestant 3: What do you mean?

Marvin: I mean her drink was laced withAmmonia.

Cheryl: Where would someone get ammonia?

Marvin: I’m not entirely sure, but I thinkI might have a clue.

Cheryl: And that is…?

Marvin: Don’t worry about it just yet, Ineed to do a little more investigatingfirst.

(Leaves Stage Left)

Cheryl: (To audience) I don’t know abouteveryone else, but I’m pretty sure thatdetective is a couple bricks away from afull house.

(She sits down. Doug enters SR)

Doug: (Frantically) Where’s thatdetective? I have horrible news for him.

Cheryl: What’s happened. Is someone elsedead?

Doug: No… WORSE, Mark’s body hasdisappeared.

Contestant 3: That makes no sense, deadbodies don’t just disappear.

(Cast freezes. Marvin enters on from SL)

Marvin: Wait! Before we can continue ourlittle mystery, I would like to take apoll from our lovely audience. I wouldlike to know who you all think the killeris.

If you think the killer is

Doug, please raise your hand.

If you believe the killer is

Cheryl Price, please raise your hand.

If you believe the killer is

Darby aka Contestant 3 please raise yourhand.

And of course for you low lives, If youthink I am the killer, please raise yourhand.

Okay, well now that we’ve tallied that up,let’s f ind out just who the killer is.

(Mark should enter, holding the detectivehostage by use of a gun)

Mark: That’s where you’re wrong!

Cheryl: MARK! How? You were stabbed.

Mark: Wrong. I staged it!

Contestant 3: But why would do that, andkill off all these innocent people?

Mark: Simple my dear. My name isn’t evenMark. Let me start over here with you. Myname is Victor Morrison. I am a past gameshow host. I was booted though from my jobbecause they felt as though I wasn’t“animated” enough.

I worked my way from nothing just so Icould get a break in this stinking town.

I put everything I had into it, and youruined it for me Cheryl Price!

Doug: But why did you kill all thosepeople.

Mark: I WAS GETTING TO THAT! I devised aplan when I heard of Cheryl’s divorce. I

thought if she couldn’t run her ownrelationship, why should she be trying tohelp everyone else in the world.

So, I decided that I would be a humblelittle nerd. I would make it look asthough I was so helpless, and theneveryone would blame Cheryl for themurders. Once she was out of the picture,I could once again be the number 1 gameshow host in America.

( While Mark is talking, Doug should bemoving around with a mop in his hand tohit Mark with)

I almost got away, and then this dumbdetective decided to get in the way, andnow it’s too late for him too…

(Doug hits Mark in the head, and Markfalls to the floor.)

(Marvin runs over and quickly handcuffsMark.)

(He gets up, and walks Center)

(The cast will all freeze, except Marvin)

Marvin: Okay, so it was truly Doug who

saved me, but in the same way who expectedMark to be the killer?

(The cast should be resetting the set backto the worn down version)

Cheryl Price, retired after that. Shedecided although Mark went crazy, he wasright. Why was she connecting couples ifher marriage wasn’t even forever.

Doug on the other hand found a new love,remember Contestant number 3? Well alittle bit after the show they gottogether, and are now happily married andexpecting a baby.

Mark, received a life sentence and wasrevoked of his game show licenses.

To this day, I still work as a detective,solving crimes that will not ever be leftunsolved.

In the end though, the game show namereally served as a purpose… Til’ Death DidThey Part.

Thank you all for the help you had in re-opening the case of the game showmassacre. Good night everyone.

(He exits off SR, lights should dim backas they were in the beginning on just aworn down game show set.)
