Music is passion; we know this much is true.

But what about what lies underneath? Why do we have a particular love for a certain song and its lyrics. Does it remind you of someone or some-thing? It could be you just really like the song itself. Do we understand what a song means or is it that we just like the melody. Many of the worlds greatest songs were based of a single feeling, when listened to they can seem like so much thought and consideration had went into them, but in reality it can all come from a single feeling of being in love or having an unforgettable night with friends.Music has the ability to remind us of certain situations and memories, ones that come to mind as soon as you hear the opening notes of a song. It seems to be almost another sense in a way like how certain smells can remind you of people and places. Lyrics can come from all sorts of places, from the feeling of falling in love to the despair and emptiness when you lose someone you love. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to music, only what you feel. Sometimes it seems like music is the only thing that can help, the only thing that can make you feel something. The idea behind this book was to show that even though people have a look or a certain genre that you think they might fit into, they can be completely different on the inside. You would likely believe that a young person would be into dance or hip-hop music but infact could be a huge fan of Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan. It works the same way in think-ing that an older person would only listen to music from their generation, when in reality these days more and more older people are listening to up and coming younger artists.

On the following pages youll find twenty five people with their chosen song and what it means to them. These people have been kept anonymous and thats part of the point that you dont know anything about these people. You have no pre-conceived ideas about them. You know nothing about where they come from, who they are or what age they might be. These are just twenty five people explaining why they love a particular song so much. The aim of the book is not only to show you why songs mean something to certain people but to also expand your mind to new tastes. People can be influenced by the slightest of things. Something as simple as a friend recommending a song to you then going on to love that song and the band itself which opens you to more bands and artists which you wouldve probably never heard of if you were never recomended that one song. Also included in the book is six songs and what they mean from the artists themselves, taken from interviews. This is so you can see why they wrote that song and how it came about to them. The style of photography in the book is lomography. In a time long before the digital camera were you could look at your pictures instantly, cameras were used with film. This made the pictures more precious as you only had so many frames. You had to make each picture count, much like a memory. Thats why lomography was chosen to photography these twenty five people, to illustrate a certain point were you belonged to the music and nothing distracted you from it.

My father-in-law Bruce Paltrow bought this big piano just before he died. No one had ever plugged it in before. So I plugged it in, and there was this incredible sound Id never heard before. All of these songs poured out from this one sound. Something has to in-spire you, and something has to take over. Its very cloudy feeling. I wrote it for my wife Gywneth when he died, they were incredibly close. Closer infact than Ive ever seen any two people. In those situations theres not much you can do but be there for that someone but I felt as if just being there for her wasnt enough, she need more that that. She needed something else

You know, not all great love songs have to be these epic ballads with violins, harps and feature some sort of vocal climax. They can be cool, they can have a beat, which is why I love this song. Its about being so in love with someone and having your love shine like a diamond, brighter than anything else. But the song also has this sick beat behind it. Its not a dance beat, but its there. Its about being in love and the feelings that come with that.

The melody actually came to me in a dream one night when I was staying at my then girlfriends house, as soon as I woke up I ran to the piano so I wouldnt forget it. When I played it out I was sure that Id heard it before, so after months of playing it for people and having them assure me theyd never heard it before, I sat down to start writing lyrics to it. I think love makes you feel like you can do anything, like no matter whats going on you feel like you can conquer the world. But then some of the most touching songs, songs that really get you in your heart come from heartbreak I was on vaction at Lake Como in Italy after just finishing my tour and the house we were staying at had this beautiful piano in the dining room. One day I just sat down at it and started play-ing, I came up with this little musical rift which I really loved. I kinda wrote the song around that I guess. I had all these feel-ings that I hadnt had time to think about while I was on tour and finally when I had time to sit down and think, it all came pouring out of me. It was a really emotional moment for me

I wrote the song about a past relationship with a wealthy boyfriend. The song itself is about escapism and living the rich life. To him I was his a trophy, he would show me off to a lot of his friends. At the time I liked it, it made me feel I was special. When I was with him I felt like I was Jackie Kennedy living back then, I have a reverie for the country America used to be. I wrote about wanting to be his national anthem because I felt like his most prized possesion, I wanted to be important to him. The relationship only lasted over the Summer, we still talk to each other from time to time.

I think he knows that the song is about him, I look back on the

relationship fondly, it was a special time

AUTHORNathan Warnock currently resides in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the present time he is attending the University of Ulster and studies Design For Visual Communication. Enjoying the course, Nathan likes to work with type and image a lot, which is evident in this book. In his third year of VisCom he plans to take a study year at the Southern Connecticut State University in Connecticut, USA to further and expand his craft in design for visual communication. LOVE, HATE AND ALL THAT OTHER EMOTIONAL SHIT is his first publication. Its been a long and difficult task, but I think Ive finally created something that Im proud of. The reason I wanted to do something like this was because Im very passionate about music and what it means. I often find myself in long conversations with friends over songs and I often wonder why they like that specific song. Thats why I wanted to persue this idea and Im so pleased at how its turned out into this book.
