Shirley Peterson discovered her love and talents for art at a very young age. She attributes her abiding interest and life-long pursuit of art to her artist mother. From her she received encouragement and appreciation of art to the extent that hardly a day went by that she wasn’t painting and experimenting in various techniques and mediums. She recalls her first keeper was a pastel she did as a child of about 10-11 years. Her interest grew as she attended school and, in high school, she earned a position as a designer on the high school year book.

At University of California/Fresno Peterson majored in fine arts but before she could finish her degree, as in the personal histories of so many artists, life took a sharp turn that temporarily detoured her career track away from art. She married while in college and her new husband graduated and became a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

She kept a hand in her art as was convenient, but then childbirth in a young family with typically small resi-dential accommodations in a military environment made a serious involvement in art untenable, at least for the time. As her daughter grew and Jim’s career did the same, Shirley became involved in programs considered an expectation for officers’ wives — volunteering. There are numerous charities and community organizations that officers and enlisted service members’ spouses get involved in and that are vital to the military lifestyle. One of

Shirley’s favorites was base thrift shops in which lightly used clothing and household goods were donated for resale to military families. She also became involved in crafting projects and, on at least one base in Virginia she again became involved in finer art by taking watercolor paint classes.

When the Petersons retired from the military and settled in Lakewood Shirley again took up serious painting, now with her own home studio. While she does not produce her art with the expectation or goal of selling her paintings, like any creative person she does appreciate an occasional sale. She also enjoys being invited to exhibit her work as a sole artist and in group shows. She

has been a member of Pacific Gallery Artists since the nineties. Another activity she resumed is volunteering. In 1995 she joined Keep Lakewood Beautiful and worked

on several projects over a 7-8 year period that contributed to the beautification of major intersections and approaches to the new City of Lakewood, once it incorporated.

Since its inception Shirley has been a crucial member of the volunteer committee to establish the ArtsFest art festival for Lakewood. The festival is now approaching its 6th annual event with her at the helm of the arts exhibit and competition.

Volunteers — A Festival’s EssenceEveryone working to make the festival a success is a volunteer, and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join the fun.

Shirley Peterson: “I’ve Never Met a Volunteer I Didn’t Like”

Peterson’s home studio is her dream come true. Well furnished and equiped for enabling her to stay long hours and well focused on her art wihtout tiring. Like most home artists (R) she needs space to store and enjoy her work.

While winning so much recognition he has made himself available to his large following by offering regional watercolor workshops. You would think when an artist reaches the point of commercial success and reknown he/she would begin settling down with his own familiar style. But Snowden is constantly checking out and signing up for workshops conducted by other artists he respectcs and, when appropriate, incorpo-rating some of what he learns into his own arsenal of techniques and styles.

Portraits take up a good measure of his time, but

he gains most inspiration from the natural world that encourages so many artists, art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to live in and explore Washington and the Northwest. The difference is he is able to apply his talents to the art of interpreting his vision onto sheets of paper for all to enjoy.

Warren and Dorothy Hunt of Newell Hunt Furniture in Puyallup have opened up enough wall space to display as many as 80 of Snowden’s paintings that are available for purchase. Patients and staff at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital too, have benefited from his art and community spirit through

Life getting a bit too predictable?Take a deep breath, shed your inhibitions and jump right in. Volunteer! It doesn’t even have to be with the Lakewood Film, Arts and Book festival (FAB). But if it isn’t you will be missing out on what is probably the most fun, least stressful volunteer opportunity in the region. And, since the event only happens once a year – with laid back meetings once a month, if you are the committee – you can measure your capacity for volunteering without breaking a sweat! If you have a love for the arts FAB is perfect for you. The Film, Arts & Book festival needs volunteers to help plan, organize and run the annual event. No particu-lar skills required – you can find fulfilment In many areas. But the festival committee also needs skilled or talented people with special skills such as graphics, website design, admin, P.R. and more.
