Louisiana Purchase (1803) 1803
Treaty signed between the U.S. and France for Louisiana territory. (not the present day state)
The U.S. originally was prepared to offer $10 million for the port of New Orleans and the Floridas (now southern Mississippi, Alabama, and east Louisiana)
Without knowing of the U.S. planned offer, France offered the entire Louisiana territory for $15 million.
This deal doubled America’s size for $15 million This added 828,000 square miles of land to the U.S. 4¢/acre The territory had natural resources which would
greatly add to the United State’s wealth

Adams-onÍs treaty (1819)
1819 Co-authors – John Quincy Adams (U.S.
Secretary of State under James Monroe) & Don Luis de OnÍs (Spanish minister to the U.S.)
The U.S. had claimed Texas as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1819 it dropped all claims to Texas in the Adams-OnÍs Treaty. The treaty set the border between the U.S. and Spanish Texas along the Sabine River. As part of the treaty, the United States agreed that Spain owned Texas. In return, Spain gave Florida to the United States.
