original name was Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1905studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania served as a design critic and professor of architecture at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957.
1950 - Wins a fellowship to the American Academy in Rome and travels to Greece and Italy where he is inspired by the ancient ruins1995 - Becomes professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches until his death in 1974He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the RIBA Gold Medalone of the most influential architects of the twentieth century
