N°04-2018. LOUIS CABAT

When director of the Villa, a young artist, Henri Lucien Doucet ( 1856-1895), sent apiece considered too bold (scene of Harem) which entailed the non-renewal of Cabat atthe head of the Villa.

Cabat is considered a self-educated artist like hisfriend of early days, Charles Jacque. “Charles Jacquehad first been introduced to these Old Masters early in hiscareer (he was 17 years old in 1830) when Louis Cabat, thena young porcelain painter who lived next door to Jacque(passage Saint-Antoine), took him to the BibliothèqueNationale where they looked at prints by or after the work ofPoussin, Lorrain, Dürer, and Rembrandt.” (Rehs Gallery)

Louis (Nicolas) Cabat (1812-1893)“Cabat, a French landscape painter, born at Paris Dec.24, 1812; studied painting under M. Camille Flers(1802-1868), and visited the most picturesque partsof France. He first exhibited in the "salon" of 1833some landscapes which the critics pronounced to be toorealistic; but he persevered in this style of painting till1837, and became the founder of a school. From thatperiod till 1848 he only contributed twice to the annualexhibitions (in 1840 and 1841), but since 1848 hehas been a regular contributor. M. Cabat was electeda member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1867, andunanimously chosen Director, in Nov., 1878, of theFrench School of Painting at Rome.” (ThompsonCooper, Men of the Time, 1884)

Let us stop in front of the landscape of Mr. Louis Cabat, conceived in a genre that astonishes our public unaccustomedto broad and severe parties. It is the view of a road that goes up to a city of Judea; on one side of the road, tall treessprout vigorously; on the other, a terrain descends rapidly without any picturesque accident; in the foreground, two figuresand above, a poor horse grazing a few blades of grass; that's the whole landscape; there is neither torrent nor rock;nothing is simpler, so nothing is more solemn; the execution is at the height of composltion, calm, perfectly suited toobjects; there, no effect sought; it is nature thoroughly studied by the most poetic spirit, and transported on canvas by themost conscientious hand. One can not over praise the exquisite tone of the sky and the firmness of the grounds. We liketo do full justice to M. Cabat, who, son of his works, has arrived without friends, without intrigue, without fortune, toplace himself in the first rank among our best landscape painters. A child of the people, he was at the time of the JulyRevolution only a Goblin worker; today Belgian amateurs place his paintings between those of Hobemma and Ruysdael, and the one he sent us could be signed Nicolas Poussin.”
