Two Louis Vandale [aka Vendal/Vandale/Vandalle]:

The presence to two Louis Vandale’s on the prairie led to confusion for researchers tracking them through

early Oregon Territory records. Louis Vandale (1796-1862) was often called “the elder” or “of Lac la

Biche” to distinguish him from his younger cousin. From 1815-1821 he was with the Northwest

Company in the Columbia District. In 1822 he became a milieu with the Hudsons Bay Company. After

his retirement he took up a claim in the swampy southern part of the prairie on Lake Labish and became a

naturalized citizen in 1851. He is often show with a middle initial of A, with Louis Vendal “the younger”

having a middle intial of B which leads to speculation that these initials were adopted as an additional

means of identifying the two rather than representing actual middle names.

Louis Vendale (1819-1859), often referred to as “the younger” was an engage of the Hudson’s Bay

Company in 1838 as a middleman. He remained in that position until 1843/4 when he took up a claim a

short distance from Woodburn. He first married Cecile McDonald, metises daughter of Chief Trader

Allan McDonald. She died in 1848, leaving two living children. He then married Marie Anne Delard,

daughter of Joseph Delard, aged about thirteen. She bore him six children. Vandale was stabbed to death

in an argument with Tobias Machetti in 1859. His widow married Medard Foisy. After the death of Foisy

she married Joseph Morrel

“Marie Anne Délard 1836-1908. Marie Anne Délard was twice widowed, having married successively

Louis Vendal, Medard Foisy and Joseph Morell. She seems to have been a mother extraordingary, for at

the age of twelve or thirteen she was the step mother of two of Vendal’s children by a former marriage,

and in the twenty-six years that followed, she gave birth to fourteen of her own, six to Vendal and eight to

Foisy. She and her third husband are buried, unmarked, in the Gervais Catholic Cemetery.” [Catholic

Cemetery Records of the Pacific Northwest by Harriet Duncan Munnick, Vancouver p. A-20]

1839: “This 22 January, 1839, we priest undersigned have baptized Marie Anne aged 3 years, legitimate

child of Joseph Délard, farmer of this place, and of Lisette Souchouabe. Godfather Etienne Lussier who

as well as the father has not known how to sign.” [Catholic Cemetery Records of the Pacific Northwest by

that time was Louis A. Vandalle

“Vandalle, Louis [b] [variation: Vendal] (c. 1819 - 1859) (Canadian: French)

Birth: probably Sorel, Lower Canada - c. 1819 (born to Augustin Vendal and Josephte

Death: St. Louis, Oregon - October 8, 1859

Louis Vandelle joined the HBC in 1838 and worked as a middleman around Fort Vancouver and

on the South Party until he retired to French Prairie in 1843-44. Vandalle farmed and raised a

family on French Prairie. He appears to have not supported the establishment of a Provisional

Government in 1843. Vandalle was stabbed to death on October 8, 1859 by Tobias Marchetti

(CCR 1, A-80). He was buried in the St. Louis Cemetery. Louis Vandalle [b] had two wives and

eight children. On September 14, 1840, he married Cecile McDonald (?-1848), mixed descent

daughter of Chief Trader Allan McDonald. Their two children were Jean Baptist (1846-?) and

Esther (c.1844-?). On June 12, 1848, a short time after Cecile’s death in 1848, Vandalle married

a thirteen year old Marie Anne De’lard (c.1835-?), daughter of Joseph De’lard. Their six children

were Marie (1851-52), Leandre (1853-53), Catherine (1854-?), Claire (1856-?), Helene (1858-?),

and Eleanore (1860-?). After his sudden death in 1859, his widow married Medard Foisy, and

still later, Joseph Morrel (CR. 80).

when he came to Oregon.

At the age of 21 he was married to Esther Vandale, and six children, all of whom

survive him, were born. They are; Mrs. J.B. Hill, Oswego, Or., Mrs. T. H. Leith,
