THE BEGINNING A trumpeter, bandleader, singer, soloist, film star and comedian named Louis Armstrong was born August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Considered one of the most influential artists in jazz history. At age 11 Louis Armstrong shot a gun in the air during a New Years Eve celebration and was arrested on the spot then sent to a young boys home where he picked up the bugle cornet, learned how to read music and realized that was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.
