Lotteries are the most widespread form of gambling in the U.S..

HISTORY OF

LOTTERIES

First lottery in 1466, in Belgium Lotteries were used for other things such as

paving roads, construction of buildings and churches, raising money for education, etc.

Was banned in late 1800’s, then they were brought back in 1964 in New Hampshire

12 states followed, now 37 current countries currently have lotteries

NEGATIVE EFFECTS

Chances of winning the lotto are 1 in 7.1 million which people forget

They drain peoples pockets Studies show “low income players spend a

higher proportion of their income on lottery tickets that do players who earn more”

The average income of a lottery player is $29,000

Quick draws being placed in bars– people don’t have good judgment when drinking

Government tricks the people by doing this to make more money

POSITIVE EFFECTS

Some states use the money made from the lottery for things to benefit their state:◦ Georgia- technology in public schools, programs,

scholarships, etc.◦ Pennsylvania- senior citizens◦ Indiana- police and fire departments◦ Kentucky- Vietnam veterans

The poor people play the lottery on their unrealistic hopes of winning the lottery; in reality, your financial problems cannot just disappear
