Alcira Levy was born in Colombia and ever since she can remember, her primary interest and passion has been painting.

Although most of her learning has been self-taught, she always has been drawing and practicing for hours contemplating the works of great masters.

In New York, she took classes with a renowned Norwegian artist; and in Florida, her home since 1981, she also studied with a French teacher.

She has participated in several art competitions and exhibitions locally; and in 2000, she had a solo show in the Largo Public Library. Bogota, Chicago, Miami, and South Carolina; locally, in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Plant City, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Seminole. "Since I can remember, I've been drawing and painting. I was born and raised in the countryside, on a ranch near Bogota, Colombia. Therefore, I have always been surrounded and inspired by the beauty of the world God has created for us. The color and shapes are deeply embedded in my mind, and I feel the urgent need to translate them onto the canvas. My favorite subject is the human figure; and although I paint other subjects, almost always I include this aspect in my work. I like to use acrylics because it dries fast; but when I do portraits, I use oil. Painting has given me many happy hours and lots of satisfaction. We are always looking for something more, something new, a wonderful idea, a new expression. That is art!” These are the words of the artist.

Letter from the President

Dear CHA Members,

The Board of Directors and I are proud to announce that CHA’s membership continues to grow as well as the achievements reached in 2009. For a young organization, this is great news. CHA has received many invitations in 2009 for art shows, we even had to refuse some do to prior commitments. There is great acceptance of CHA throughout the Tampa Bay community, and we could not do all of our accomplishments without your support.

Most of all we thank the CHA members for their collaboration and participation in all art exhibits and events. Without them there would be no success stories.

I would like thank the Board of Directors for their hard and team work throughout the year. Our monthly meetings and numerous days of coordination have been a great learning experience for all of us. There are a lot of tasks ahead of us. But we also had some setbacks. The biggest lost to CHA was the loss of one of our founding members, our dear Maria Esther Carrillo. She will always be in our hearts for her dedication to improve Hispanic culture and education in the Tampa Bay Area and to inspire the people she touched.

CHA closed the year with a great Christmas party that gave the Board of Directors and the members the opportunity to meet each other in a casual and relaxing way. Hosted by the Frassicas in their lovely South Tampa home, we stayed together to the very end despite the cold weather. We realized that we really are growing as a family.

CHA SALES IN 2009

Yes, it’s true. Some of the CHAmigos sold their art work at the Florida Aquarium in 2009. They are—

Luz Pennington, Jorge Ruiz, and Armida Nagy Stickney.350.

“Sea Life,” by Luz, sold for $200. “Atrapada,” by Jorge, sold for $350. “Any Fish will Do,” by Armida, sold for $300 (not shown). Congratulations! We encourage you to keep painting and participating in shows, especially at the Florida Aquarium where we have year-round exhibition. Of course, the theme needs to relate to sea creatures, the sea and shore.

CONGA CALIENTE

ABOUT FAMOUS LATIN -AMERICAN ARTISTS We hope to feature Latin American artists who are renowned in the International community of art. Beginning with BOTERO, who is currently exhibiting in the Tampa Regional Area in January.

Fernando Botero Angulo (born April 19,1932) is a Colombian figurative artist, self-titled "the most Colombian of Colombian artists" early on, coming to prominence when he won the first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1958. Botero's work includes still-lifes and landscapes, but Botero tends to primarily focus on situational portraiture. His paintings and sculptures are united by their proportionally exaggerated, or "fat" figures, as he once referred to them.

Botero explains his use of these "large people", as they are often called by critics, or obese figures and forms thus:

7 | P a g e

"An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."

Botero is an abstract artist in the most fundamental sense of the word, choosing what colors, shapes, and proportions to use based on intuitive aesthetic thinking. Though he currently spends only one month a year in Colombia, he considers himself the "most Colombian artist living" due to his insulation from the international trends of the art world.

Botero gained considerable attention in 2005 for his Abu Ghraib collection, which began as an idea he had on a plane, finally culminating in more than 85 paintings and 100 drawings.

The Circus collection followed in 2008, with 20 works of oil and watercolor.

In an interview promoting his Circus collection, Botero said: "After all this, I always return to the simplest things: still lifes."

Ybor City Saturday Market! Take advantage of this great opportunity to display your art in historic Ybor City at Centennial Park. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the purchase of a white tent, measuring 10 x 10 feet, to be used at a weekly market where thousands of tourists and Tampians gather. It is located at the Centennial Park (corner of 8th Avenue and 19th Street). CHA has rented a space for three months (January, February and March).

The main idea for this initiative is so that each CHA member has the opportunity to learn about the world of selling and to expose and sell their art in this market.

This open market takes place every Saturday rain or shine from 8: 00 a.m. to 2: 00 p.m.

The fee to participate is $10 per person, sharing space with another person; or $20 for an individual per Saturday. This fee includes the tent and two tables (8 feet and 4 feet. Itt must be paid in advance by sending a check to the Treasurer, CHA, c/o Luz Pennington, 7912Heather Court, Tampa FL 33634.

To reserve a Saturday in January, please contact Augustine Negron (813-960-4406). To reserve a Saturday in February, please contact Manuel Portals (813-770-0057).

Artists are to bring their own equipment (e.g., chairs, tablecloths) and artwork.

Keep posted by checking http://art-cha.com.

EXHIBITIONS

For those who cannot remember the exhibitions and dates when you participated, below is a list of exhibitions in 2008 and 2009. This will help us maintain an updated record of your activities.

Please update your biography and send it to Magdalena Matías for the CHA Artists’ Portfolio via e-mail or postal mail. For CHA, it is very important to have data on the country of origin, the specialization and experience of each of the member artists. The information helps promote CHA members as Hispanic artists. Moreover, we need the biographies to prepare articles for the featured artist section of this newsletter.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
