LOS AZTECA

Many countries had MANDATORY EDUCATION for the upper classes, but for the Aztecs, education was important no matter gender, rank or station. Schools were free with separate schools for girls, upper-class males and separate school for lower-class males. Girls learned domestic tasks, upper-class males learned dream interpretation, language, and other liberal arts. Lower-class males learned combat along with a varied curriculum.

Another contribution is the used of ANTISPASMODIC MEDICINE, medicine to prevent muscle spasms and relax muscles, may have helped during surgeries. Also, helps with insomnia, epilepsy, and high blood pressure. (Blue Passion Flower pictured above.)

The Aztec introduced the concept of TERRACED FIELD AGRICULTURE, which were drought free and produced as many as 7 crops per year including two corn crops.

The Aztecs maintained a system of communication between conquered cities without the help of animals nor wheeled vehicles. The roads were traveled by foot and maintained by tribute, and travelers had a place to rest, eat, and use the restroom (REST STOPS) that were every 6 to 9 miles apart.

The Mayans invented an advanced an accurate calendar system consisting of 260 days, and later a CALENDAR that followed the solar year of 365 days. Each of the 18 months had a name and symbol, with each month being 20 days long. The Mayans set aside a 5 day period that was unlucky and not given a name.

The Mayans invented a fully functioning system of writing using nearly 800 pictures to represent sounds. They painted the writing on books made from fig tree bark and also on pottery pieces.

The Maya combined rubber with other materials to make it more durable. The Maya used VULCANIZATION about 3,000 years before Charles Goodyear was given credit for finding this process.

LOS INCA

The high altitudes of the Incan Villages led to freezing temperatures at night. The people used the cold to their advantage by laying out potatoes under a cloth and letting them freeze (FREE DRYING). The food required no curing and lasted for years.
