Letter from the President

Dear Members & Friends:

Welcome to the August issue of “Los CHAmigos y Las CHAmigas.” CHA exhibitions are approaching and will be in full swing during the celebration of our Hispanic heritage in the Tampa Regional Area. We are all looking forward to your works of art--the products of your hard work and inspiration. Invitations continue to come our way. We received a new invitation from The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, Florida! Looks like CHA is on the map. However, not all invitations seek to feature CHA artists exclusively. Even though public calls to artists are posted online, you can decide to participate in any of these calls or not. CHA hopes you will put our shows on your calendar as first choice. Round Table News

In the way of background, CHA held its first Round Table on June 8, 2010. It is planned that this will be one of two Round Tables to be conducted each fiscal year. Several concerns were addressed in the issue of July 2010. This issue will address two more:

Monthly meetings with all members for workshops, networking, and show-and tell.

Continuation—Letter from the President

CHA members need to be ready to meet the challenges. Are you ready? Please feel free to participate in any of the calls from non-sponsored art shows; but please reserve artwork for your CHA-sponsored art shows!

Damaris President

Continuation—Round Table News There are too many e-mail messages, causing confusion on an event.

With regards to monthly meetings, CHA is very interested in conducting such meetings. However, we need more participation from the membership to take the lead to organize such monthly meetings. At present, the resources of the Board of Directors is limited; and the Board is seeking to address this problem in the near future. New blood is needed to make things happen

This will require that the Board of Directors meet twice a month especially if the monthly business meeting of the Board of Directors cannot be conducted before the monthly meeting of the members. That is the first problem. Board meetings tend to last for three hours on average.

The second situation is coordinating the site, not to mention finding a site that would allow us to schedule the meeting at the same time and day without too much interference. We believe the facilities used at the Town N’ Country Center was adequate for our Round Table on June 8 and appears to be centrally located for the majority of the members. We, however, need someone to take charge of organizing this.

If you have any ideas or recommendations, please send us an e-mail at [email protected].

We agree there are too many e-mails. As Webmaster, I am partial to generating all e-mails from our social network at http://art-cha.com. Some habits are hard to change, and we are working on it. Recently, we issued a Call to Artists for the PHCC art show, BLUE. No matter how carefully we planned from our end, we were surprised that we had another form being required by the Library at PHCC. That request was sent to us on July 29, 2010, well after we made the call. Such things happen—coordination, as is communication, is an art that not all can master at all times. Our apologies for any inconveniences. We will make every effort to send out Calls when we have complete information. However, there will be times when a call may be time sensitive—not all the information is available, but the time limitations are short to work with.

Are you interested in a solo show?

Stay tuned.

Featured Member Artist of the Month— Nestor Martinez

Nestor Martinez was born in Colombia. He

began his work in the fine arts in 1966 when he enrolled in the National University of Colombia. Throughout the years, he worked as a draftman and art illustrator for several well-known advertising agencies such as Propaganda Sancho (BBDO) and McCann-Erickson Corporation. Followed by that, he forged a career as an architect in his native country. Meanwhile, he worked as a cartoonist for three years, creating animated cartoons for the cartoon industry.

He moved to Tampa in February 2005. He began to work as a full-time artist when he landed a job as a professional painter for Rainbow Arts & Design. His work tends to be influenced by realism. Nestor says that most of his influence is found in nature and in his love for horses. He enjoys working with all mediums and textures. He brings the textures of nature into his works.

Famous Artists— Pablo Picasso

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso known as Pablo Ruiz Picasso October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his

Los CHAmigos y Las CHAmigas 4

work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) andGuernica (1937), his portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso demonstrated uncanny artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence; during the first decade of the twentieth century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune throughout his life, making him one of the best-known figures in twentieth century art. Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long lifetime. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs.[45] At the time of his death many of his paintings were in his possession, as he had kept off the art market what he didn’t need to sell. In addition, Picasso had a considerable collection of the work of other famous artists, some his contemporaries, such as Henri Matisse, with whom he had exchanged works. Since Picasso left no will, his death duties (estate tax) to the French state were paid in the form of his works and others from his collection. These works form the core of the immense and representative collection of the Muse Picéasso in Paris. In 2003, relatives of Picasso inaugurated a museum dedicated to him in his birthplace, Málaga, Spain, the Museo Picasso Málaga. The Museu Picasso in Barcelona features many of Picasso’s early works, created while he was living in Spain, including many rarely seen works which reveal Picasso’s firm grounding in classical techniques. The museum also holds many precise and detailed figure studies done in his youth under

his father’s tutelage, as well as the extensive collection of Jaime Sabartés, Picasso’s close friend and personal secretary. Several paintings by Picasso rank among the most expensive paintings in the world. Garçon à la pipe sold for US$104

million at Sotheby's on 4 May 2004, establishing a new price record. Dora Maar au Chat sold for US$95.2 million at Sotheby’s on 3 May 2006.[46] On 4 May 2010, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was sold at Christie's for $106.5 million. The 1932 work, which depicts Picasso's mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter reclining and as a bust, was in the personal collection of Los Angeles philanthropist Frances Lasker Brody, who died in November 2009. Christie's won the rights to auction the collection against London-based Sotheby's. The collection as a whole was valued at over $150 million, while the work was originally expected to earn $80 million at auction.[47] There were more than half a dozen bidders, while the winning bid was taken via telephone.[48][49] The previous auction record ($104.3 million) was set in February 2010, by Alberto Giacometti's Walking Man I.[

As of 2004, Picasso remains the top ranked artist (based on sales of his works at auctions) according to the Art Market Trends report.[51] More of his paintings have been stolen than those by any other artist.

Picasso is the world's most stolen artist, the Art Loss Register has 550 of his works listed as missing. The Picasso Administration functions as his official Estate. The U.S. copyright representative for the Picasso Administration is the Artists Rights Society.
