NIH/NHLBI

“Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient Oriented Research in Acute Lung Injury.” This award allows Dr. Ware to

build and expand her research and mentoring programs in patient-oriented research in acute lung injury (ALI) and to

devote more time to her current mentees as well as to expand her mentoring to include new postdoctoral trainees as

well as medical students in the research immersion phase of their training.

NIH/NHLBI

“Altering Sedation Paradigms to Improve Brain Injury and Survival in Severe Sepsis.” This study tests the

hypotheses that sedation of mechanically ventilated septic patients with an alpha2 agonist (dexmedetomidine) rather

than a GABAergic agent (propofol) will increase days alive without delirium or coma, improve 90-day survival,

decrease long-term cognitive impairment, and reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokine cascade following sepsis.

R01 HL 087115-06A1 (Christie) 07/01/14 – 6/30/18

NIH/NHLBI

“Clinical Risk Factors for Primary Graft Dysfunction.” Dr. Ware leads the biomarker development and validation

aspects of this project. This is a multicenter cohort study of lung transplant recipients investigating the role of donor

smoking as a risk factor for acute lung injury (primary graft dysfunction) following lung transplantation.

COMPLETED:

5 R01 HL 088263 (Ware) 02/01/08 - 01/31/15

NIH/NHLBI

“Treatment of Pulmonary Edema in Organ Donors.” Dr. Ware designed and implemented this multicenter clinical

trial. This project tested the hypothesis that administration of an aerosolized beta-2 agonist (albuterol) in a

randomized, blinded placebo controlled trial in 500 brain dead organ donors will improve donor oxygenation by

enhancing clearance of pulmonary edema and will improve donor lung procurement rates.

1 R01 HL 108712-01 (Ware) 09/01/12 – 08/31/14

NIH/NHLBI – Mayo Clinic Subcontract

“LIPS-A: Lung Injury Prevention Study with Aspirin.” This proect was a multicenter, phase II, double-blind,

placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial of aspirin for the prevention of ALI. Dr. Ware’s laboratory served as

the biomarker core for this clinical trial.

NIH P30 ES000267 (Liebler) 10/1/13 – 9/30/14

Center for Molecular Toxicology Pilot Project Grant

“Air Pollutants and Risk of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.” This study tests the hypothesis that exposure to

high levels of common air pollutants including ozone and particulate matter causes lung inflammation and oxidative

stress, priming the lung to develop ARDS in the setting of an appropriate clinical risk factor.

5 R21 HL 112656 (Ware) 05/04/12 - 04/30/15

NIH/NHLBI

“Inflammatory and Epithelial Injury Markers for ARDS Prognosis: A Validation Study.” This study is designed to

indicators in patients with acute lung injury.

AHA Established Investigator Award 01/01/09 - 12/31/13

American Heart Association

“Coagulation and Fibrinolysis in Ventilator Associated Lung Injury: The Role of Alveolar Epithelium.” The overall

hypothesis for this proposal was that cyclic mechanical stretch of the alveolar epithelium potentiates pro-

inflammatory intra-alveolar fibrin deposition.

“Inflammasomes: Regulation and Function in Acute Lung Injury.” Specific Aim #1: To determine the regulation

and function of inflammasome complex formation and its regulated pro-inflammatory cytokines in experimental

ALI. Specific Aim #2: To determine the mechanism(s) by which cytoprotective CO molecule inhibits

“Tissue Factor Mediated Fibrin Deposition in Acute Lung Injury.” Under the guidance of Dr. Lorraine Ware

(mentor), Dr. Bastarache tested the hypothesis: Alveolar epithelial upregulation and release of active tissue factor in

response to inflammatory and apoptotic stimuli is necessary for intra-alveolar fibrin deposition and is a key

determinate of physiologic and histologic extent of acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

NIH/NIDDK

“Impact of Acute Kidney Injury on Kidney Disease Progression.” This project established an Acute Kidney Injury

(AKI) Natural History Consortium with the primary objective of following the natural history of patients with AKI

“Genetics of Primary Graft Dysfunction.” Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is severe acute lung injury occurring in

the days after lung transplantation, characterized by diffuse pulmonary edema and profound hypoxemia. This study
