T he mere thought of parrots mingled with plants strikes fear in the
heart of the horticulturist. This need notbe, as some parrot species'can indeedbe housed among the leaves and flowers. You certainly wouldn't want yourmacaw in a planted flight, unless it'splanted with mature oak trees! On theother hand, lories and plants generally get along fine together. We havesome softbills that cause more damageto the plants than do the lorikeets;mousebirds for example will even eatthe weeds!
We have tried some of the larger lotiesalong with our softbills and plants, butthey seem to intimidate many of the quieter birds. Of course, Chattering Loriesdo far worse than intimidate! Our onlyattempt with Chatterings in a mixedaviaty led to the rapid mutilation of otherbirds, as well as chewed off brancheson ferns and plants. This was longago, and we have learned the lessonwell. Chattering are always housedalone.
Some of the smaller lories have

"Some of my lories perverselyrefuse to sample the apple offered, yet enjoy eating the apples that fallonto the roof of their aviary fromthe trees above. I should add thatthese are cooking apples! As loriesare fond ofeating the leaves whichfall onto the roof of their aviary, they can be taught to eat othergreen food such as lettuce by plac-ing it on the roof."

boot box hung high in the flight. Thismay turn out to be true with the FairyLorikeets as well. Rosemary Low inher Lories and Lorikeets mentions apair of Fairies in her care that demolished a small tree in their flight, althougha friend with the same species in alarge, planted, softbill flight suffered nodamage.
Lorikeets will take advantage of anyflowering plants. We have cape honeysuckle growing over several of ourflights; the reachable flowers are quickly devoured. Grapes which have seeded themselves from the lory food fallingthrough are left alone by most of thesmaller species, while Trichoglossusand Chalcopsitta leave nothing withinreach. Red Flanks, however, do notseem to touch greenery.
If you do intend to house lorikeetsin a planted environment, pay specialattention to the plants that you use. Whileyou can plant most anything in a flightintended for softbills, some can betoxic to chewing birds, such as lorikeets. If you have the space, one of the bestways to enjoy these wonderful little parrots is in a planted aviary. It is especiallyenjoyable when they bathe in the leaves
.wet from rain. Try adding some "feath-ered flowers" to your garden! •
worked out well in planted flights. Webred Meyer's Lorikeets as well as Stella'sin this mixed softbill, planted flight.Goldie's Lorikeets did fine but refusedto breed. Even a previously provenpair never laid an egg in the mixedaviary. As soon as they were moved intoa cage, they went right back to nest. Thiswas also the case with this species atPittsburgh Aviary several years agoaccording to Dr. Lindsay Clack.
Some of the softbill species thatshared this particular aviary, whichwas about 350 square feet, 10 feethigh, were: White-cheeked Turacos,Bali Mynahs, Black-spotted Barbets, and Spur-winged Plovers, all of whichbred in this environment. Other inhabitants that did not breed successfully wereGold-fronted Chloropsis, Fulvus-breasted Woodpeckers, Black-headed Sibias,Pekin Robins, and ]ambou Fruit Doves. The Meyer's Lorikeets were almostnon-stop breeders in this flight. TheStella's, which were not in there at thesame time as the Meyer's, raised young, less successfully. Both species hadaccess to a variety of nest sites, fromwooden nest boxes to hollow logs, but chose wooden boxes about 9 in.square and 18 in. deep.
Since the planted aviaries wereintended mainly for softbills, whichgenerally have a different diet thanlories, it was interesting that the loriesconsumed large amounts of softbilldiet, with a particular fondness formealworms. Also of interest was thenumber of softbills that relished thelory nectar. I never thought of woodpeckers as nectavors but they surewent through it! When the Meyer'sLorikeets were rearing young, which wasmost of the time, they were the first birdson the mealworms, driving off even themore aggressive barbets.
In the wild, some spedes of lorikeets, such as the Fairy, nest in bromeliads. Incaptivity they maintain a very wet nest, necessitating changing shavings everycouple of days when chicks are present.I intend to introduce a pair of Fairies toa planted flight that will contain severaltypes of bromeliads and plants, such asstag hom fern, among others, just to seeif they will nest outside of a nest box.I have an aviary now with a large staghom in it, but the occupants, a pair ofdouble-eyed fig parrots, seem bent ondestroying it! They have chewed throughfronds that are 4 ft. long, apparently justfor fun, as they are nesting in a small
