Events & Notices
I would like to end the term by
giving thanks. I am thankful to the
Loreto community that has
welcomed me so warmly into the
school. I am thankful to our parents
for sharing and trusting us with
their most precious gift – their
daughters. I am thankful for our
dedicated staff who value the
education of your girls above
anything else. I am thankful for our
beautiful school grounds that bring
tranquillity without fail each day.
I believe strongly in the power of
gratitude; having a positive mindset
influences how we see the world
and each other. I see the world as a
place of beauty and the people in it
as having great promise. That is not
to deny the cracks that exist in both
of these things, but I always believe
that (most) people come from a
place of good, and that differences
are what make us human. The great
prophet Leonard Cohen says it
better than I ever could – in his song
Anthem, he eulogises:
“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.”
One of the hardest things we will
teach our children is to try and
discern what is good from what is
not; how to accept difference, and
what might be perceived as fault in
others; and most importantly, to
accept our own shortcomings -
rather than viewing these as faults,
instead seeing the strength that
these imperfections provide us.
So, in honour of giving thanks, I
have set up this email address:
If you ever feel the need (and I’m
hoping that you do!) to share your
thanks with someone at the College,
then send us a line and we’ll be sure
to pass it along.
Go with peace and gratitude into
the next two weeks of holidays, and
we look forward to welcoming your
girls back to school in Term 4.

Mission DayOn Friday 23 September, the whole
College community celebrated
Mission Day. Held annually, Mission
Day is an event aimed at raising
funds for the projects supported by
Mary Ward International
throughout the world.
Thank you to the Senior Student
Executive for their superb
organisation of the first half of the
day and also to the staff who
supported them and all students
who contributed to their class run
activities.
A whole school event such as
Mission Day contributes so
positively and importantly to
building and bonding our
community, as well as developing
our global awareness whilst raising
funds for needy Loreto projects
overseas.
Junior School
Quad UpdateThe Loreto College community
eagerly anticipates the completion
of the Junior School Quad project,
which will be ready for students at
the commencement of Term 4.
The project has been an exciting
one so far, but even more exciting
will be seeing our Junior School
students spend their recess and
lunch times enjoying all the
wonderful features the new space
has to offer.
Reminder about
student safety
during the
holidaysStudents are reminded to be wary
of approaches from strangers,
especially when they are
unaccompanied. If they are
approached students should not
respond and should not accept
offers of rides or gifts.
Students should seek the assistance
of other nearby adults if they feel
unsafe and should report the event
to a trusted adult as soon as
possible.
SAPOL advises that taking out a
mobile phone and calling police can
deter the offender, and they
recommend the student making a
formal report to their closest police
station.
Uniform
Requirements for
Term 4Next term the students will wear
their summer uniform. Please
ensure that on those cooler
mornings that the blazer is the
outer garment when going to and
from school. Additionally, wearing
of the hat is also a requirement in
Term 4, particularly whilst in the
sun.
LOSA High Tea for
Year 12 StudentsLast Sunday, the Year 12 students
attended a wonderful High Tea
experience at the invitation of
LOSA. The purpose of this event
was for the LOSA committee to
welcome the Year 12 students into
the Loreto Old Scholars Association
and raise awareness of the
importance and value of the Year 12
students staying connected to each
other through this Association.
LOSA offers many annual
opportunities for Old Scholars to
catch up, including luncheons,
breakfast gatherings, movie nights,
after work functions and other
events.
Deputy PrincipalMs Penny Minchin
Belonging to LOSA offers students
the opportunity to continue
connecting with their peers, and
other past students of Loreto
College, in the years and decades
after graduation. The LOSA
community is a welcoming one,
offering support as students
progress through the workforce. All
Year 12 students automatically
become lifelong members of LOSA
upon their graduation from Loreto
College.
I commend the hard work of the
LOSA committee, which is
comprised of members
representing decades of Loreto
schooling, who strive to ensure
there are opportunities for all old
scholars to keep in contact with
each other.
A starting point for the current Year
12 students would be for them to
follow LOSA on Facebook so that
they are aware of LOSA events.
Importantly, Year 12 students
should keep the College informed of
their contact details so that LOSA
can keep in touch with them as Old
Scholars of the College.

10, 9, 8, 7...Loreto
College has lift-
off!The Loreto College STEM club
recently launched four minature
satellites 27 km into the
stratosphere. Lift-off was from the
Mt Barker High School oval, and
landing occurred approximately
15km east of Mannum, two hours
later.
The launch was conducted under
challenging conditions, with squalls
and wind gusts beginning 20
minutes before lift-off. However,
the skilful handling of the giant
helium balloon by the crew helped
alleviate any concerns.
The payload was the satellites
which STEM students had learnt to
program under the guidance of our
Scientist in Residence, Flavia Tata
Nardini. We were able to track the
flight path of the satellites on our
devices, which for some led to quite
an adventurous chase to see the
spectacular landing in a patch of
mallee scrub!
Next term, members of the STEM
Club will analyse the data that the
satellites collected. Of particular
interest will be the video footage
that should capture the curvature of
the earth. Thanks must go to
Ms Patty Warrender for setting up
this activity, and to Ms Ann-Maree
Tippins for all her hard work in
ensuring its success.
Coding for a
Better WorldYear 7 students recently spent their
mornings learning how to program
microchips to make a more
environmentally sustainable
world. Creating technology that
provides thermostats for
greenhouses, or dimmer switches
for street lights, allows students to
realise the important role
technology plays in helping us
conserve the planet’s precious
resources.
The highlight of the coding
workshops saw students Skyping
the School of the Deaf in Tagore
Nagor, India, where their students
programmed a microchip, just as
our girls had, to initiate movement
of a stationary vehicle, housed in
our own classroom! It was a
magical experience that allowed
students from across the globe to
develop a relationship based
around the wonders of technology.
FarewellI first travelled to Timor-Leste as an
enthusiastic and somewhat
idealistic thirty-something. Sleep
was difficult to achieve, as
gunshots still rang out in the
distance, and the dogs and roosters
- traumatised by the events of the
previous 12 months - barked and
crowed all night. It was hot, and
sweat poured off me as I taught
English - in a classroom that also
housed a pig! I was scared and
exhausted, but I persevered -
because I had come to change the
world! Of course, 16 years on, I
realise that the only thing that
changed in that three months was
me.
Head ofTeaching & LearningMs Cheryl Stephens
From that time on, Timor-Leste has
held a large piece of my heart.
While living there is hard, the
country and people are quite simply
beautiful. I have learnt many
things from my time in Timor-Leste
- not least of which is that
sometimes, the most significant
learning in life comes from the most
unexpected sources. In the current
educational environment, where
NAPLAN and ATAR scores are
considered an indicator of school
and teacher quality, the important
role schools play in creating happy
and resilient adults is often
overlooked. Despite the emphasis
on ATAR outcomes as a measure of
schooling success, most students
realise that it is experiences outside
the realms of ATAR scores that have
provided them with some of their
most significant learning.
I believe Loreto College has the
balance right. We achieve
outstanding SACE results, yet at the
same time we provide students with
an incredible range of
opportunities, both in and out of the
classroom, to develop skills and
provide insights and experiences
not represented by an ATAR score.
As I watch, via social media, our
past students flourish, I know we
have the balance just right. I am
blessed to have taught at such an
educationally astute school as
Loreto, and as such it is incredibly
difficult to leave. However, I feel an
enormous debt to Timor-Leste, and
I am hopeful that, 16 years on
- with a lot more wisdom and a
little less idealism - I might be able
to repay it.
Atelogu,
Ms Cheryl Stephens
Head of Teaching & Learning
Mission DayMission Day is our biggest internal
fundraiser for the year. The day
commenced with a Liturgy shared
by our whole school community –
from Reception to Year 11. Even
though the day is optional for Year
12s, many attended. Our guest
speaker in the morning was Ms Kim
Nass, Executive Officer for Mary
Ward International. Ms Nass spoke
about the work carried out by this
organisation so that staff and
students could see the beneficiaries
of money raised. Her focus was
especially on East Timor and South
Sudan.
After a donut-fuelled recess break,
we were entertained at the Talent
Show, with acts as diverse as the
Year 10 Band, aerobics, dance
and solo singing performances.
Congratulations to Alana
Iannace, who amazed everyone
with her solo performance - and she
is only in Year 8!
With a change of venue
necessitated by renovations in the
Junior School Quad, the lawns and
paved areas in front of the Acacias
were the setting for food and
activities. From sausages to
slushies, there was plenty of variety.
It was a successful day, against a
backdrop of brilliant sunshine, with
over $4,000 raised for Mary Ward
International.
I wonder how many staff and
parents remember the times when
we closed off Talbot Grove for the
day as our venue?
Student
Leadership
HandoverThis handover took place during
our school Assembly earlier this
week. This was an opportunity for
the school to recognise and thank
those students who have led the
student body since Term 4 of 2015,
and to introduce those who will
lead us into 2017. Our ceremony
incorporated the Felicity prayer,
written by Loreto student leaders; a
blessing, and a pledge of service.
The leadership selection process for
Year 11 students is now complete,
with Sport, Performing Arts, Music
and Dance Captains all elected this
week. Congratulations to all who
have been chosen and thank you for
your willingness to take on this very
important service to your school.
Early next term, the Year 10
students will be nominating and
voting for Vice-Captains in each of
these areas.

SACEIn the world of SACE, it is the
'beginning of the end' for Year
12s. This week, our first round of
marks and externally assessed
Investigations were sent to the SACE
Board. This process will continue
throughout October and November,
so it is essential that students are
ready to submit their best work
possible.
As teachers must meet SACE
deadlines with electronic
submission of results, it is not
possible to offer students extensions
for their work.
Formal SACE exams commence with
French orals on Monday 31
October, followed by the first of the
written papers , in English
Studies, on Monday 7 November.
These exams will continue through
to Friday 18 November.
We wish students the best of
luck during this process.
Movies Under the
Stars IIMovies Under the Stars (2nd
Edition) will take place on Friday 21
October.
The evening will commence at
6.30pm, with entertainment and a
sausage sizzle, with the film
'Shrek' commencing at 8.00pm.
Even if you have seen ‘Shrek’
before, you probably have not seen
it ‘under the stars’! I wonder if one
of the activities will be to find a
‘blue flower with red thorns’ in the
Acacias gardens?
The first movie night was held back
in April; an initiative of the Student
Executive Leaders. It proved to be
so successful that they wanted this
to be their swansong before they
focus on final assessments and
exams.
This activity allows our 2016
student leaders to work
collaboratively with those who are
coming into their leadership role.
The beneficiary will be the Edmund
Rice Camps.
I invite you to look at this link:
http://www.edmundricecamps.org t
o see the work they do for the
community. A number of our
student leaders have volunteered
for this organisation and are
passionate about supporting them.

Year 6 Canberra
TripOur Year 6 students recently
enjoyed a most successful
educational four-day tour of
Canberra. We are fortunate that the
Australian government recognises
the importance of all young
Australians being able to visit the
national capital as part of their
Civics and Citizenship education. To
assist families in meeting the cost of
the excursion, the Australian
government contributed funding of
$60 per student, under the
Parliament and Civics Education
rebate program.
On Monday 12 September, the
students were flown to Canberra by
two of our fathers, Mr Andrew
Taylor and Mr Ketan Katdare, on
the early morning Qantas flight. The
girls were fortunate to be given a
tour of the cockpit, and a special
announcement was made over the
intercom to welcome our students
on board. This was an extremely
exciting start to our successful trip.
Many thanks are extended to Mr
Taylor and Mr Katdare for helping
to organise this exciting experience.
Throughout the week, the girls were
given the opportunity to participate
in a variety of educational
programs, with a focus on
Australia’s history, culture, heritage
and democracy. Some of these
activities included a guided visit to
the Australian War Memorial and
involvement in the “We Will
Remember Them” program, as well
as tours of the National Art Gallery,
Parliament House, National Portrait
Gallery, Old Parliament House,
Questacon, National Film and
Sound Archives, National Museum
of Australia, Electoral Commission
workshop, Canberra Deep Space
Centre and the National Arboretum.
The students stayed at the
Greenhills campsite, which is
abundant with Australian wildlife.
We stopped counting kangaroos
after we reached 30! The girls’
behaviour was exceptional and was
appreciated by many as we toured
throughout the city.
This was a well-balanced
experience for the girls, providing
diverse learning opportunities.
Many thanks to the team of staff:
Ms Hattie Ziesing, Ms Amanda
Smith and Ms Petria McCallum, who
gave their time and energy so
willingly to make this trip a success
for the girls.

Supporting young
people during the
school holidaysThe school holidays are a great
opportunity to recharge your
batteries and spend quality time
with family and friends. However,
some students may find it difficult
to adjust as they are away from
their usual school supports.
For young people who may find the
school holidays difficult, Headspace
(National Youth Mental Health
Foundation) have identified a
number of ways that parents and
carers can support the wellbeing of
a young person during the school
holidays. These include:
1. Encourage the young person
to stay connected
2. Encourage the young person
to stay involved
3. Encourage physical activity
4. Encourage a regular routine
5. Encourage healthy eating
habits
6. Encourage play
