This week I would like to acknowledge and thank our wonderful P&C volunteers who have organised, shopped, wrapped and sold literally hundreds of beautiful Mother’s Day gifts for our students. The response to the stall was great, with very few gifts left over. I hope all our mums, grandmas, carers and special women in the lives of our students feel loved and valued this weekend. Our Driving Boys program commenced on Tuesday, with the group of Stage 3 boys learning some valuable lessons about listening, teamwork and handling frustration. The nature of the physical and interactive activities encouraged full participation and the group- designed rules ensured ownership and effort. Well done, boys. We look forward to hearing of your successes each week. Thank you to Mrs Franke and Mr Matiuscento for their support in running this program. As I mentioned last week, NAPLAN is being held next week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These tests are done here at school and are considered a regular part of the curriculum. NAPLAN cannot be studied for and students are not expected to do so, however, we do ensure that students are familiar with the formats used for the tests. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is a routine part of their school program. Encourage them to do the best they can on the day. NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test: it is simply a snapshot in time which captures information about literacy and numeracy levels and helps us to plan for growth in these areas. Our staff is participating this year in a suite of professional learning called Flourish. This course is designed to promote workplace wellbeing and improved productivity. teach and to work closely with the students; to see real engagement and learning. It seems however, that there is something preventing as much of that time on task as we would like. As everyone knows, schools are dynamic and at times unpredictable environments, which makes interruptions unavoidable. Teachers spoke of the myriad of interruptions to their school day; non-instructional activities that impacted adversely on student learning – things like whole school announcements, phone calls to the classroom, visitors to the classroom, special events and assemblies. While we cannot control and avoid all such interruptions, we would like to develop some procedures that we can put in place to minimise them. Collaboratively, we thought it would be useful to trial an interruption-free two hour period each morning – we will call this something snazzy but at this stage I’ll just call it Time on Task. The idea is that in the first session of the morning, from 9:20-11:20am, every classroom and our office environment will be a place of productivity and instruction. This has a flow on effect on you – our parents and community. Next week we will develop some protocols around contacting the office and calling to speak with classroom teachers. I know that as parents you want the best learning environment for your children, so I am sure you will support this initiative. We will ask you not to call the office and ask to speak with class teachers unless it is an urgent matter. Our administration staff will take a message and pass it on for the teacher to handle during a non-teaching period of the day. We will aim to commence our Time on Task initiative at the start of Week 4 and I will be interested in the feedback from parents, teachers and students by the end of term once everyone has had time to adjust to our new expectations. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the sunshine and spoil someone special on Mother’s Day. Keep smiling! Sara Swift, Principal

Public Speaking We will be holding our Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday 30th July and Thursday 1st August (week 2 Term 3). A note with all the details and requirements for each stage has been sent home this week. Public Speaking is part of the English curriculum and compulsory for all students. To assist students and families with preparing an appropriate speech, please refer to the 2019 Public Speaking Guidelines that were sent home and emailed to families. These guidelines will also be available on our school website.

Therapists At School There are four key steps for parents who seek to have services delivered in school:

1. Ask the principal in writing 2. Discuss the details with the principal or class

teacher. 3. Principal considers your request. 4. If agreed, the service provider needs to enter

into an agreement with the school and meet important legal requirements.

The principal has discretion to decide whether or not

an external service provider can enter the school and how arrangements will be managed. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis considering the individual circumstances of the student. Any decision takes into account the educational needs and priorities of the student including access to the curriculum, the impact of the student’s learning programs, the school’s operational context and duty of care obligations towards all staff and students. NDIS guidelines state that: “NDIS-funded therapy services should generally not be delivered at school…Nor should children or young people be taken out of school to receive these supports.” However, there may be occasions where the delivery of an NDIS-funded service at the school may be appropriate. If you are unsure, please contact the principal to discuss the nature of the therapy or service you are considering. Athletics Carnival Notes will be coming home next week with details about our upcoming Athletics Carnival. This event will take place on Wednesday 29th May at Waratah Oval, Sutherland. All students from Kindergarten to year 6 will be attending the carnival.
